Michael Jackson Album-Cover Artist Explains Hidden Meanings In His Work

Kadir Nelson leads MTV News through his tribute to the King of Pop. By James Montgomery Kadir Nelson Photo: MTV News It is a testament to the legendary life of Michael Jackson that no matter how big a canvas artist Kadir Nelson used to tell MJ’s story — and at 9 feet wide and 4.5 feet tall, he used a pretty big one — he kept running out of room. It seems that Jackson’s reign as the King of Pop was just too lengthy, his list of achievements too large and his life too all-encompassing to be summed up in even the most massive of murals. “Michael’s life was so huge I couldn’t get it all into the painting,” Nelson told MTV News. “So I would take images from throughout his life that were milestones … images that would resonate with his fans. And even doing that was a challenge.” Still, Nelson gave it his best effort, and the result was “The King of Pop,” his epic tribute to Jackson’s life, which struck such a chord with the late icon’s estate (and his label, Sony Music) that it was chosen as the cover for the upcoming Michael album . But what fans see on that album is just a fraction of Nelson’s original work. ” ‘The King of Pop’ is the life story of Michael Jackson, so what you see on the album cover is the centerpiece of the mural; Michael is wearing his famous bejeweled glove, and he’s wearing a golden suit of armor, and he has this collar around his neck, like what you would see in a French painting of King Philip,” Nelson explained. “The theme for this painting is ‘royalty’ and ‘pop,’ because Michael was the King of Pop. So you have Michael being crowned by two Cupids, he has his birthstones in his crown. He’s wearing a soft, velvet drapery over his armor, because Michael had a very soft heart. Also, his hand is placed over his heart, because he had a big heart, and he put that big heart into everything he did.” And radiating from that royal image is Jackson’s life story, which begins with images of his childhood in Gary, Indiana, extends upward to a gallery of his musical influences (Barry Gordy, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye, to name just a few), and then explodes with the launch of his solo career, starting with his star-making turn at the “Motown 25” television special (where he unveiled his “moonwalk” dance) and rolling right along to his Thriller heyday. There are also portions of the painting dedicated to his Bad, Dangerous and HIStory albums, images of his children, the omnipresent media that followed him everywhere, and the women he shared close relationships with (Liz Taylor, Lisa Marie Presley and Madonna). There are also, as Nelson explained, coded images hidden throughout the painting, everything from bubbles (blown by his pet chimpanzee, of course), an apple (because, as the painter explained, “kids would call [Jackson] ‘Applehead’ on his Neverland Ranch”), Peter Pan soaring off into the Northern Lights (meant to symbolize Jackson’s ascension after his death) and, perhaps the most striking image of all, a golden throne atop a mountain: Jackson’s throne, never to be occupied again. “It’s empty,” Nelson explained, “Because no one will ever sit in it now that he’s gone.” What do you think of the Michael cover? Mariah Carey Performs With Mother On Holiday TV Special

Superstar sang holiday classics and songs from her new Christmas album Merry Christmas II You during concert. By James Dinh Mariah Carey and her mother, Patricia, sing on stage together during ABC’s “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” Photo: ABC It was an evening full of smiles, snow and festive cheer as Mariah Carey treated fans to an early Christmas gift with her own holiday TV special on Monday night. The ABC broadcast, appropriately titled “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You,” featured the pregnant singer spreading merry joy throughout Los Angeles’s Orpheum Theater with yuletide classics, holiday originals and a first-time onstage performance with her mother, Patricia Carey. Decked out in a Santa-esque minidress, Carey kicked the hour-long broadcast off with her high-energy tune “Oh Santa” — the lead single from her second holiday album, Merry Christmas II You — as a pack of kids happily danced around the singer. “They say it’s unrealistic/ But I believe in you Saint Nick/ So grant this wish for me right quick/ Santa won’t you come and make him mine this Christmas night,” Mariah crooned before the sparkling stage setup. Carey also put her own spin on Christmas classics by mashing them together. “Alright, so we’re going to do a new song … actually a very old song,” she told the roaring crowd. “We created a medley of ‘Little Drummer Boy’ and ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ for the new album Merry Christmas II You, and we’re going to play that one for you tonight. And here we go. …” During the number, the singer displayed her vocal acrobatics, including her soothing falsetto, with the assistance of a backing choir before kicking off “O Holy Night,” which she described as one of her “favorite Christmas songs of all time.” Soon after, friend and musical collaborator Randy Jackson joined the singer for a hip-hop-flavored rendition of “Here Comes Santa Claus (Housetop Celebration).” The “American Idol” judge appeared excited to take the stage with the singer as he urged the audience to applaud for “the hottest, the dopest, the bestest … Mariah Carey.” Later on, Carey sang another original, “When Christmas Comes,” which she revealed she’d never performed live. The song draws similarities to her inspirational 2002 song “Fly Like a Bird.” Before a clip from the holiday classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” the soon-to-be mother traded the show’s earlier spectacles for a piano and accompanying player for a peaceful rendition of “Christmas Time Is Here” and fan favorite “Joy to the World.” The evening wasn’t just full of jolly anthems though, as the focus turned to Make-a-Wish child Mackenzie, who is in need of a new kidney. Footage of the young girl was shown alongside her adoptive mother, Ronna Williams. After exchanging a few words with her, Carey directed the audience to give a round of applause to Mackenzie and dedicated her “Christmas Time Is in the Air Again” to her. Making the celebration even more memorable was a performance by the singer and her mom, opera singer Patricia Carey, who took the stage together to perform a medley of “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hallelujah.” “Please give a big hand to my very special guest. My mother, Patricia Carey, is here tonight,” the songbird said, standing next to her mother. “We’re going to do a song from the new album Merry Christmas II You. This is something that’s very close to both of our hearts.” And if fans ever wondered where Mimi got her vocal talent, it became clear last night. In a singing extravaganza, Patricia took control of the performance as Mariah followed behind with repetition lines until she busted out her signature whistle notes. Carey ended the festivities on a high note (literally), singing her signature holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as an entourage of holiday characters danced around the powerhouse diva. The gang offered her a batch of gifts, but the singer kept in tune with the song’s lyrics by pushing their presents aside. As the song ended, the stage was transformed into a winter wonderland as a flood of snow fell atop the stage ceiling and onto Carey and company. Did you catch Mariah’s TV special? Phoenix Recall Meeting ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Snooki

‘We’ve become friends!’ guitarist Laurent Brancowitz laughs to MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Phoenix Photo: MTV News Back in January, worlds collided when “Jersey Shore” star Snooki met Phoenix , the world’s hugest rock band (from France). Their chance encounter occurred on the red carpet of the Grammys, where the Snookster was serving as MTV News’ special correspondent and Phoenix were, uh, walking (they’d go on to win Best Alternative Album too). The end result was 83 seconds of lost-in-translation awkwardness, an “interview” that was amazing for several reasons, most of them having to do with the fact that neither party had any idea who the other was (though we also like the part where Snooki tells Phoenix guitarist Laurent Brancowitz that he looks like “the vampire Edward”). Not surprisingly, the video of their meeting became an Internet sensation, to the point where, for the remainder of 2010, Phoenix were forced to answer questions about Snooki everywhere they went (Snooki, on the other hand, has since moved on to bigger and better things ). So, naturally, when MTV News caught up with the fabulous French foursome over the weekend at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas, we decided to continue the trend. But rather than just ask them about their run-in with Snooki, we also wondered if their relationship had grown any. “We’ve become friends!” Brancowitz laughed. “No. People talk about it a lot, but we always manage to let it be very blurry. We have absolutely no idea of the details. It was a very nice encounter.” We suspect that was just him being polite, but we’ll let you be the judge. Above is our latest interview with Phoenix plus the original clip of them meeting Snooki for the first — and, we’ll assume, last — time. Watch it and try very hard not to cringe yourself to death. ‘Tron Legacy ‘ Star Garrett Hedlund Calls Movie ‘Incredible Experience’

‘It’s such a high-tech adventure,’ actor tells MTV News on the film’s blue carpet. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Ryan Downey Garrett Hedlund Photo: MTV News “Tron” was an eye-popping technological extravaganza when it first hurtled into theaters in 1982 with its speeding light cycles and gaming imagery. The film eventually proved to be so influential — spawning video games and a whole “Tron”-obsessed subculture in its wake — that Disney circled back to the project for the 2010 sequel “Tron Legacy.” For Garrett Hedlund, who plays Sam Flynn, the son of software engineer Kevin (portrayed in both movies by Jeff Bridges), the latest take on the project is still an impressive spectacle that ramps up the potently mind-scrambling imagery. Hedlund revealed his thoughts to MTV News about the seeing the final product for the first time on the blue carpet at the elaborate “Tron Legacy” premiere Saturday. “I saw it couple weeks ago when I was in Montreal, but only with a couple pals and on a smaller Technicolor screen. But even then it was an incredible experience. It’s such a high-tech adventure,” Hedlund said. “It’s undoubtedly like anything I’ve ever seen before, and I think the loss for words on it is the best part of it and I can’t wait to see it again.” Even though Hedlund has a role in bringing the digital wizardry of the franchise to a new generation — in addition to getting a high-profile, career-boosting gig from the project — he said he was most excited to see “Tron” filmmaker Steven Lisberger revel in the enduring influence of his groundbreaking movie nearly three decades later. “That’s where I’m so happy for Steven Lisberger. Something he created around 28 years ago and this wild maniacal story has come to fruition 28 years later in such an unbelievable way,” he said. “To see him walking with his family and enjoying this with all of us and being there when we’re filming with all of us and sort of being the godfather on set, I’m more proud of him in this very moment.” What are you looking forward to seeing in “Tron”? The Warming of Antarctica: A Citadel of Ice Begins to Melt

The fringes of the coldest continent are starting to feel the heat, with the northern Antarctic Peninsula warming faster than virtually any place on Earth. These rapidly rising temperatures represent the first breach in the enormous frozen dome that holds 90 percent of the world’s ice. by fen montaigne In 1978, when few researchers were paying attention to global warming, a prominent geologist at Ohio State University was already focused on the prospect of fossil fuel emissions trapping heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. His name was John H. Mercer, and when he contemplated what might be in store for the planet, his thoughts naturally gravitated to the biggest chunk of ice on Earth — Antarctica. “If present trends in fossil fuel consumption continue…” he wrote in Nature, “a critical level of warmth will have been passed in high southern latitudes 50 years from now, and deglaciation of West Antarctica will be imminent or in progress… One of the warning signs that a dangerous warming trend is under way in Antarctica will be the breakup of ice shelves on both coasts of the Antarctic Peninsula, starting with the northernmost and extending gradually southward.” Mercer’s prediction has come true, and a couple of decades before he anticipated. Since he wrote those words, eight ice shelves have fully or partially collapsed along the Antarctic Peninsula, and the northwestern Antarctic Peninsula has warmed faster than virtually any place on Earth. The question as humanity pours greenhouse gases into the atmosphere at an accelerating rate, is not whether Antarctica will begin to warm in earnest, but how rapidly. The melting of Antarctica’s northernmost region — the Antarctic Peninsula — is already well underway, representing the first breach in an enormous citadel of cold that holds 90 percent of the world’s ice. Much attention has rightly been paid to the precipitous warming of the Arctic, where Arctic Ocean ice is rapidly shrinking and thinning, Greenland’s large ice sheets are steadily melting, and permafrost is thawing from Alaska, to Scandinavia, to Siberia. But none of the earth’s ice zones, or cryosphere, can compare with Antarctica, which is 1

Taylor Swift Speaks on 50 Cent, Turning 21 and More

Taylor Swift and Chelsea Handler have something in common: an affection for 50 Cent. But while the latter may possess carnal knowledge of this rapper, the former simply likes his music. “When we’re on tour, we have all three girls – the backup singer, the fiddle player, and me in one room – and we all warm up to 50 Cent music,” Taylor told Chelsea during an interview this week. “It would be surprising how many lyrics I know.” Taylor Swift on Chelsea Handler Later in the discussion, talk turned to Swift’s 21st birthday. It takes place on December 13. “I’ll get to go to the concerts that my friends go to and leave me at home for,” she said. “It’s sort of like ‘Oh, we can’t bring the baby because it’s a 21 and over show.’ I don’t want to be that girl where you like try to get in somewhere where you’re too young to get in.” In conclusion, Swift dished on what it’s been like to live by herself for the first time. “Living alone you can do so many fantastic things, I’ve learned! Dane Cook Sizes Up New-Release Rivals Kanye West, Justin Bieber, More

Comedian drops I Did My Best – Greatest Hits the same week as new albums from Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha and a load of other megastars. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Matt Elias Dane Cook Photo: Getty Images With all the hype surrounding MTV News’ musical Mega-Release Week — Bieber! Kanye! Nicki! Ke$ha! Jay-Z! MCR! — you might not be aware of yet another album hitting stores this week: Dane Cook’s I Did My Best – Greatest Hits. Lucky for us, the man behind the album stopped by our office to discuss his just-released comedic stylings, as well as his thoughts on the other big albums dropping this week. So why release a greatest-hits album? “I’ve been doing stand-up comedy 20 years altogether — ten years of recording tracks and club sets and arena sets,” Cook explained. “So I thought it would be a great way to close out the decade, a great ‘thank you’ to fans to say, ‘These are the high-water marks that we shared,’ remaster it, make it sound great. To new fans that are always discovering me saying, ‘Where do I start?,’ this is really the collection of what I think are the highlight moments,” he said. And for the die-hard fans out there who already have some of those greatest hits, he included a bunch of unreleased tracks on the album as well. “There’s something for everyone on there,” he assured us. Regarding his competition in the new-releases category, we asked Cook to share his thoughts on some of the big names. First up, Kanye West. “Never heard of him. What is he about?” Cook deadpanned. “Kan-J? Kanye? I’m just going to call him West. That’s great. I’ll definitely look him up.” With Nicki Minaj, Cook pretended that we were asking about something suggestive — “Oh, no, I’m thinking of a m

‘Castle Walls’ will serve as the next single off the rapper’s No Mercy , due out December 7. By James Dinh, with reporting by Tim Kash T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage Producer Alex Da Kid might be relatively new to the industry, but the British hitmaker has already proven that he can strike gold when bringing together artists of different musical genres. With production credits on summertime scorchers like “Airplanes” (B.o.B and Hayley Williams) and “Love the Way You Lie” (Eminem and Rihanna), the 27-year-old music mind reveals he’s now trying his hand with another duo: T.I. and Christina Aguilera. While on the American Music Awards red carpet, Kid spoke to MTV News about “Castle Walls,” the track he produced for the recently incarcerated rapper’s forthcoming album, which features the pop star. Not only did the producer reveal that the song is set to be the next single off Tip’s No Mercy , but he also gushed about how the song will grab a variety of listeners. “It’s going to be T.I.’s next single,” he told MTV News about the collabo. “I love it. I think it’s amazing. It’s my sound, just kind of an evolution of that. I think it’ll cater to a lot of different people.” A reported snippet of the track minus T.I. surfaced on the Internet a few weeks ago and finds Aguilera gently singing over a steady, mellow beat about the downfalls of loneliness: “Everyone thinks that I have it all/ But it’s so empty living behind these castle walls (These castle walls)/ If I should tumble if I should fall/ Would anyone hear me screaming behind these castle walls?/ There’s no one here at all, behind these castle walls.” “Castle Walls” isn’t the only star-studded effort on the MC’s new album. No Mercy will also feature appearances from Eminem, Kanye West, Chris Brown and The-Dream. The ATL rapper’s collaboration with Em, “All She Wrote,” leaked online last Tuesday.
