Since the show kicked off in 1998, it’s had a long history of getting some of the biggest female performers in the world on the same stage belting out some of pop’s best tunes. That first show gathered Aretha Franklin, Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, Shania Twain and Mariah Carey, quickly becoming a pop-culture milestone. It even prompted the ladies of “Saturday Night Live” to poke fun at the over-the-top singing styles and personalities of the women chosen for the show. In the 11 years since the premiere episode of the concert special, everyone from old-school belters to new-school singing sensations have been billed as “divas.” The show ran annually until 2004, after which it took a break for several years. By the time the show was re-launched in 2009, a whole new crop of pop superstars had emerged. In ’09, Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson, Adele and Miley Cyrus proved their diva status, taking the stage and ushering in a new era. A year later, in 2010, Nicki Minaj, Sugarland, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Keri Hilson, Paramore and Katy Perry brought some new-millennium glamour to the show. That year, the show was dedicated to supporting soldiers and billed “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” event. This year’s show, airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT Monday on VH1, will bring Clarkson, Welch, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott and Jessie J to the stage. In a tribute introduced by Nas, Welch, Wanda Jackson, and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will honor late soul singer Amy Winehouse . VH1 also will pay tribute to the prominent birthplaces of soul music, including Chicago, Detroit, London, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee. The divas are expected to pay homage to these cities and the genre with their own soulful tracks as well as some of soul music’s classic tunes onstage at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. And the celebration is not exclusive to women: The Roots have been confirmed as the event’s house band, and ?uestlove is set to pull double duty as musical director. Poor Barry-O ! Another one bites the dust. Reggie Love, a key member of the Obama entourage, is planning to leave the White House by the end of the year, people close to the administration said. Love, 30, is a popular, gregarious figure in the White House. A onetime forward for the Duke Blue Devils basketball team, Love started out as a staff assistant in Obama’s Senate office after college, rising to become his personal assistant, known as the “body man.” Love’s exit comes at a time of transition for the administration: several longtime advisers have left over the last year, in keeping with the time-honored tradition that close aides do not abandon the president immediately before an election. But Love’s position may be among the most difficult for Obama to fill. Obama has described Love as “the person who keeps me on schedule.” But like many young loyalists on the Obama staff, Love has evolved into a much more important role over time, acting as a gatekeeper and a liaison – and basketball buddy. Obama once described him as a “little brother.” Among the recognizable members of the Obama team in public – he is a towering 6-foot-4 — Love is also a constant presence in the West Wing and by the president’s side during every trip away from home. He is in the background of countless official photos, even if he rarely speaks in a public setting, apart from the occasional interview on ESPN. Relatives of Heavy D say he visited a doctor the day before he passed away. Rap legend Heavy D knew something was seriously wrong with his health the day before he suddenly collapsed and died Tuesday, officials told the Daily News. “He had gone to the doctor the day before,” Ed Winter, Assistant Chief of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office, told the Daily News. “He had what appeared to be like flu-like symptoms.” Investigators completed an autopsy Wednesday morning, but declined to release a preliminary cause of death, saying that toxicology tests must first be performed. The tests could take up to six weeks to complete. “He was taking medication, so we want to see what the levels were,” Winter said. The trailblazing, Westchester County-bred star weighed 344 pounds at the time of his death, Winter said. “He said he had a touch of pneumonia, maybe from traveling. He just got back from England,” cousin Ruddy Phillips, 50, told The News after speaking with the entertainer’s dad in Mount Vernon, N.Y. Heavy D, whose real name was Dwight Arrington Myers, was taken by ambulance to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday; he died 90 minutes later, police said. He was conscious and talking, but having difficulty breathing, when officers first arrived at his home after a 911 call was made, said Lt. Mark Rosen of the Beverly Hills Police Department. The 44-year-old rapper was returning home from a shopping trip when he experienced shortness of breath and collapsed in an exterior hallway of his condo building, Rosen said. “There doesn’t appear to be any foul play. We believe it was medically related,” Rosen said. Born in Jamaica and raised in Mount Vernon, Heavy D rose to stardom in the 1990s as the frontman for the group Heavy D & the Boyz. He leaves behind a 13-year-old daughter, with whom he was extremely close, Phillips said. “He was a really great dad. Everybody is wondering how she’s going to take it now that he’s gone. She loves her dad so much,” Phillips said. “And his mother is taking it really hard. He’s the third brother in the family to die. Everybody is stunned. No one can believe it. Only in America… Executors for the estate of Michael Jackson demanded Wednesday that MSNBC drop its plan to air a “reprehensible” documentary that promises a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the singer’s relationship with Dr. Conrad Murray, but which they charged smears the late pop icon. In a letter to MSNBC President Phil Griffin and the cable channel’s corporate overseers, the Jackson representatives argued that Murray, convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson’s death, uses the documentary “to shift the blame post-conviction to Michael Jackson, even though a jury considered the evidence and rejected this very argument.” MSNBC purchased “Michael Jackson and the Doctor: A Fatal Friendship” from a British production company and plans to air it Friday and Monday night, along with an “exclusive” interview with Murray by NBC News correspondent Savannah Guthrie. A Los Angeles Superior Court jury convicted Murray for administering propofol, a surgical anesthetic, to Jackson and then failing to monitor the pop star as he stopped breathing. MSNBC representatives had said earlier that the cable channel did not pay for access to Murray or contribute to his legal defense. The producer of the documentary, October Films, said it paid only $1 for two years of access to Murray and a behind-the-scenes look at his legal defense. Representatives of MSNBC and October Films said they did not know what arrangements might have been made by the film’s distributor, Zodiak Rights. Zodiak representatives could not be reached. The Jackson family representatives questioned whether additional payments were made to Murray. “Was it really only $1, or was it more?” said a letter from John Branca and John McClain, who are co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate. Here’s is the ad for Marc Jacobs’ new fragrance Lola, featuring 17-year-old Dakota Fanning . Do you think this picture is inappropriate? The British sure do… A print ad featuring the teen actress has been banned in Great Britain after being deemed too “sexually provocative.” In the ad, an innocent-looking Dakota, dressed in a frilly pink dress, holds a giant bottle of Marc Jacobs’ Oh, Lola! perfume between her thighs. Four complaints were lodged from readers offended with the ad, which was enough for the Advertising Standard’s Authority to pull the campaign. Here is part of the ASA ruling’s: “The length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality. Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualise a child. We therefore concluded that the ad was irresponsible and was likely to cause serious offence.” Coty Inc., the company that manufactures the fragrance, argued it was “provoking, but not indecent” and didn’t show any “private body parts or sexual activity.” Regardless of their plea, the ASA has banned it from being published in any U.K. publication. Eddie Murphy is leaving the Oscars in support of his buddy Brett Ratner . Here’s his statement: “First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony,” Murphy said earlier today. “I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.” Aw, well that’s a shame. Some folks never learn. And we thought crack was bad. SMH. Meth just might be worse . Just ask Heather Raybon. She can’t seem to stay away from making the stuff, even though it’s exactly what effed up her face, sending her back into one painful surgery after another. Heather Raybon was left permanently scarred with terrible facial burns after being caught up in a blast at a meth lab in 2004. But police in Florida said despite the life-changing incident the 31-year-old has continued to try and manufacture crystal meth. She was arrested after police raided a trailer in Milton, Florida, while they were attempting to serve a warrant on fugitive Brian Mauldin. Inside the home police noticed a strong chemical smell that indicated the possible presence of meth manufacturing materials. Deputies also saw drug paraphernalia that was left in plain view and immediately summoned detectives from the drugs unit. Investigators who searched the residence allegedly found materials and ingredients used in manufacturing methamphetamine. Detectives also found 13 grams of meth powder, 32 grams of meth oil and an active ‘one pot’ meth lab that the couple had attempted to hide. A small metal pill bottle was found in Raybon’s purse. Its contents allegedly tested positive for meth. Fire crews were called to the trailer home to dismantle the active lab due to the threat of fire or explosion. Raybon and William Hindall, 30, who was inside the trailer, were arrested and charged with trafficking methamphetamine, possession of felony drug equipment and possession of listed chemicals to manufacture meth. In 2004 Raybon suffered third degree facial burns after an explosion at a suspected meth lab. She has undergone numerous facial surgeries in the last seven years. Sgt Scott Haines from Milton Police said: ‘Raybon has multiple past arrests involving methamphetamine related charges in Santa Rosa County. ‘Raybon also suffered severe and disfiguring burns during a fire that occurred on December 16, 2004 in Milton. ‘Due to the injuries and past intelligence, investigators believe that Raybon’s burns were consistent with being associated with a meth lab explosion; however Raybon was cooperative with investigators as to how the injuries occurred.’ Police are still looking for Mauldin who is wanted for the manufacture of meth.
