James Cameron Supports Aboriginal People In Lawsuit Against Canada

‘Avatar’ director is helping Canadian tribal peoples concerned about pollution caused by government’s oil-sands extraction. By Eric Ditzian James Cameron Photo: MTV News After spreading word of the colonial persecution of a tribe of blue aliens on a natural-resource-rich planet called Pandora, James Cameron has been focusing his environmental activism closer to home. In April, the “Avatar” director pledged to assist Brazilian tribes in their fight against the construction of a controversial dam project, and now he has committed to helping aboriginal peoples in Canada take legal action in connection with pollution from oil development. Cameron, who was born in Ontario, Canada, met privately with aboriginal leaders and residents of Fort Chipewyan, Alberta, on Tuesday to discuss the community’s concerns about the connection between high cancer rates and water, air and wildlife pollution stemming from ongoing exploration and extraction of oil sands, according to The Vancouver Sun. “I will be meeting with [Alberta] Premier [Ed] Stelmach tomorrow and I will be doing a press conference afterwards to get the word out there about what’s happening here,” he told the paper. “Hopefully we can make a difference and get things moving in the right direction. It’s going to be a fight, as I’m sure you know. But if you all stand together and work together with the other First Nations, I think we can draw a line in the sand here.” Fort Chipewyan residents have long complained about high rates of cancer and other illnesses they say stem from oil-sands development and are planning legal action against the provincial and federal governments. In 2009, the Sun reports, the Alberta Cancer Board announced that Fort Chipewyan residents had experienced 30 percent more cancer cases than normal, though the community’s small population might have rendered that rate a statistical anomaly. The Alberta government has denied that oil-industry activities have negatively impacted communities downstream from development sites. The extent of Cameron’s assistance is still being determined. In addition to his meeting with government officials and the media attention that his presence attracts, the Oscar winner might directly contribute to legal efforts or help with a fundraising drive. “There’s a big imperative for them to get this tar-sands oil right,” Cameron said. “We’re not saying they have to stop development, we’re not saying they have to take the jobs away. We’re just saying they’ve got to do it right. They’ve got to do it in a way that’s responsible. Responsible development, responsible to the environment and responsible to the people directly affected by it. That’s not a lot to ask. There’s a lot of money at stake here, and they should spend some of it to fix this problem.” Share your thoughts about Cameron’s efforts in the comments. Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: James Cameron

Former Washington Post Editor Len Downie: Huffington Post a ‘Parasite’

It appears that the Huffington Post isn’t just upsetting people for its often uncouth and liberal take on the day’s news. Now people are getting irritated with its willingness to reprint other outlet’s content while offering minimal credit. And so goes the view of former Washington Post editor Leonard Downie, Jr., author of “ The Rules of the Game.” During his remarks at the James Cameron Memorial Lecture at London’s City University on Sept. 22, Downie gave his view of “the new news” and offered a harsh critique of the Huffington Post. He explained operations like HuffPo operate on the cheap. “This follows, in a way, the model of national Internet news aggregators like Huffington Post,” Downie said. “They confine their costs to minimal staffing necessary to operate the websites and edit content.” He maintained that the site co-founded by editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington would take from national and local sources and fill in the holes with content from unpaid bloggers. The aggregators fill their websites with news, opinion, features, photographs and video that they continuously collect – some would say steal – from other national and local news sites, along with mostly unpaid postings by bloggers who settle for exposure in lieu of money,” he continued. And this sort of use of media is a parasitical approach to journalism, luring an audience through the use of “titillating” content. “Though they purport to be a new form of journalism, these aggregators are primarily parasites living off journalism produced by others,” Downie said. “They attract audiences by aggregating journalism about special interests and opinions reflecting a predictable point of view on the left or the right of the political spectrum, along with titillating gossip and sex. Revealing photos of and stories about entertainment celebrities account for much of the highly touted web traffic to the Huffington Post site, for example.” Even Downie himself, back in 2008 said there would be a time when the print edition of some newspapers wouldn’t exist. But he said local papers would likely survive. But he said that he was unsure how outlets like the Huffington Post would fare going forward. “It is not yet clear whether many – or any – of the aggregators will become profitable – or, more importantly, whether any of them will become sources of original, credible journalism,” he said.

James Cameron Wants to Film Parts of Avatar 2 at the Bottom of the Sea

Photo: Wikipedia , Creative Commons But How Will Blue on Blue Look on Screen? James Cameron is nothing if not ambitious. Avatar was a triumph of cutting edge technologies (advanced motion capture, 3D cameras, computer generated characters and sets, digital projection, etc), but it might turn out to have been a walk in the part compared to the Avatar sequel. Cameron has apparently decided to have at least part of the action take place in Pandora’s oceans, and he has commissioned an ultra-deep-sea submarine that can rea… Read the full story on TreeHugger

True Lies Will Be a TV Series

A few years after a TV adaptation of Mr. and Mrs. Smith tanked at the pilot stage, Hollywood is giving True Lies a small-screen spin (even though the “married people with guns” genre may be rather crowded after Undercovers premieres). James Cameron will produce the series adaptation of the Arnold Schwarzenegger/Jamie Lee Curtis action comedy, and the project is currently out to networks. Don’t blow this golden opportunity, Tom Arnold ! [ Deadline ]

Marxists Take Piranha 3D’s Side Against James Cameron

” We ourselves are the ‘piranhas,’ ogling after this commodified flesh,” writes Jacques de Molay, a Marxist professor of neurosemiotics who went long — but not quite Mark Canton long — on the economic metaphors of the T&A gorepalooza Piranha 3D . “Here one begins to appreciate the sophistication of [director Alexandre] Aja’s vision, in comparison to the similarly 3D-mad James Cameron.” Ha! Take that, Jim! You did not invent piscine dialectics. [ Libertas ]

Real Housewives of New Jersey Reunion Part 1: By the Numbers

Uh, so, who watched the first part of the Real Housewives of New Jersey reunion last night? It was an emotionally scarring, 75-minute display of primal Jersey rage punctuated by hair touch-ups, crocodile tears, and Andy Cohen’s sh*t-shirring questions . Because it was so spectacularly explosive, profanity-laced, and over-the-top, I decided to recap last night’s trauma by the numbers rather than using Movieline’s standard reality check format (because we can all agree that everything seen last night was very real, beginning with Andy Cohen’s fear). As Danielle would say, I promise this will be very “therapeutical” for everyone.

EXCLUSIVE: Piranha 3D Producer Rips James Cameron: ‘Jim, Are You Kidding or What?’

Who’s up for some good old-fashioned, bareknuckle producer fisticuffs? After hearing last weekend that James Cameron was not especially pleased with the work Piranha 3D did with its three-dimensional coed-munchers, Movieline checked in today to see if the film’s producers might want to respond. And did they ever.

‘Last Exorcism,’ ‘Takers’ In Close Race For Top Spot

‘Takers’ is only an estimated $300,000 behind ‘Exorcism’ at box office. By Mawuse Ziegbe Ashley Bell in “The Last Exorcism” Photo: Lionsgate The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Last Exorcism” ($21.3 million) #2 “Takers” ($21 million) #3 “The Expendables” ($9.5 million) #4 “Eat Pray Love” ($7 million) #5 “The Other Guys” ($6.6 million) “The Last Exorcism” is fighting to the last minute for the top spot at the weekend box office. The supernatural thriller is set to pull in $21.3 million since landing in theaters on Friday. However, the gangster flick “Takers” is right behind the horror-fest with $21 million. According to reports , the star-packed heist movie could overtake “Exorcism” when final box-office numbers come in on Monday. Exorcism,” starring Patrick Fabian and Ashley Bell, initially appeared ready to nab the weekend crown when the flick “easily outpaced “Takers” at the Friday box office with $9.4 million. “Takers,” which touts an all-star cast that includes chart-topping artists T.I. and Chris Brown alongside British actor Idris Elba, debuted with $7.5 million. Holding steady in third place is the explosive, ensemble action romp “The Expendables.” After ruling the box office for two weeks, the macho flick couldn’t fend off the sturdy theater draw of new releases “Exorcism” and “Takers,” and raked in $9.5 million. “Eat Pray Love” and “The Other Guys” round out the top five. Theatergoers are still falling for the tropical romance and midlife introspection of the Ryan Murphy-directed “Love” which made $7 million over the weekend. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg continue to rake in laughs as a mismatched cop duo in “The Other Guys,” which scored $6.6 million at the box office. The re-release of James Cameron’s sci-fi juggernaut “Avatar” didn’t make the box-office top ten. A revisited version of the record-shattering fantasy adventure, which features almost ten minutes of new footage, pulled in $4 million. Check out everything we’ve got on “The Last Exorcism” and “Takers.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com.
