Robert Zemeckis’ Flight Trailer: Denzel Washington Runs Into Turbulence

After riding train after train and whatnot , Denzel Washington is back navigating giant hunks of careening metal in Robert Zemeckis ‘s Flight , which marks the director’s return to live-action filmmaking after a decade spent trying (in vain, IMO) to conquer the uncanny valley. So how well do director and star succeed in piquing your interest in a movie about an airline pilot (Washington) who saves a plane full of passengers only to have his heroism — and drinking habits — come under scrutiny in the aftermath? Below, watch the first trailer for Flight , which boasts a stellar cast surrounding Washington that includes Bruce Greenwood, Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, John Goodman, and Melissa Leo. It’s not all that revealing, which is a good thing in this age of spoiler-happy marketing, though there’s potential for some big unknown twist to rock us to our core in the last act. So what’s there to look forward to? Washington as a normal dude trying to figure it out, I suppose — or as a hero hiding some dark secret, which would be more interesting — and, of course, the sight of Denzel rolling a freaking airplane on top of some houses , or whatever. That should be enough for me. And yet… I’m just lukewarm on Flight . Is there any reason to see it besides the fact that it’s Denzel being Denzel and Zemeckis maybe-recapturing the knack for storytelling on display in his best live-action hits? Head to Apple for the trailer premiere. Then again, I am about to get on a flight tomorrow morning, so forgive me if I’m not too juiced for a movie about the one airplane that falls apart in the sky for no good reason. Flight synopsis: In this action-packed mystery thriller, Academy Award winner Denzel Washington stars as Whip Whitaker, a seasoned airline pilot who miraculously crash-lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, saving nearly every soul on board. After the crash, Whip is hailed as a hero, but as more is learned, more questions than answers arise as to who or what was really at fault, and what really happened on that plane? Flight is in theaters November 2. [via Apple ]

Kim Kardashian, Kris Humphries Gear Up For Divorce Battle

While she’s long since moved on, Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries are still technically married, and their divorce proceedings are likely to be contentious. The former couple is scheduled to have their depositions taken in their ongoing divorce proceedings at the end of June, with plenty of unresolved matters. How can this be, considering that they did have a prenup and have now been apart much longer than they were even married? Depends who you ask. Kim’s camp insists Kris is dragging this out to keep his name in the news (unlikely) and hoping to secure the best possible settlement (slightly less unlikely). Humphries’ lawyer plans on asking Kim about her decision to keep her engagement ring , the $325,000 Ferrari wedding gift they got, and much more. Kardashian filed for divorce after only 72 days of marriage, which Kris says was based on fraud and deceit … never a bad assumption with Kim really. Whatever his motivation, the two are approaching this quite differently. “Kim is just livid that she has to be deposed. She’s tried to get out of it, but there is no way she can,” a source says. “Kris is ready for his deposition and wants the truth to come out about what really happened when they were dating and after the wedding.” At least Kim can distract herself by moving in with Kanye West . Kim’s deposition will take place at her lawyer Laura Wasser’s office at the end of June and Kris’ attorney Lee Hutton will do the majority of the questioning. Kris’ deposition will take place in Minnesota, where he resides, later this month as well. Wasser will fly in for that, though Kim almost certainly will not. [Photos: WENN.com]

Carrie Underwood Repeats As Billboard Champ

Blown Away #1 again as Adele moves back up to #2. By Gil Kaufman Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Album Cover Photo: Arista Just as the 11th season of “American Idol” is wheezing to a close
, the top three contenders can take some heart in the fact that former champ Carrie Underwood is still at the top of her game. Underwood’s latest, Blown Away , will spend a second week at the top of the Billboard 200 charts thanks to sales of 120,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Though sales were down 55 percent, that was enough to edge out a resurgent Adele , who may have benefitted from the Mother’s Day Bump for her unstoppable 21 , which was up 31 percent and two spots to #2 on sales of 101,000. That holiday push helped lift Adele over the 9 million mark in the U.S., with diamond status now well within reach. The rest of the top 10 was fairly stable, with buzz band Silversun Pickups landing an impressive debut at #6 with their third full-length studio album, Neck of the Woods , while Tank rumbled in at #9 with This is How I Feel (33,000). The rest of the top 10: Lionel Richie continues his remarkable late-career roll with Tuskegee , which moved up three spots to #3 (71,000) as sales passed the 750,000 mark. NOW 42 held in at #4 (65,000), followed by Norah Jones , Little Broken Hearts (60,000), One Direction , Up All Night (#7, 40,000), Jack White , Blunderbuss (#8, 34,000) and Luke Bryan , Tailgates & Tanlines (#10, 26,000). It was a swift trip in, and out, of the top 10 for B.o.B , whose Strange Clouds fell seven spots in week two to #12 as sales dipped by 67 percent to 25,000. Further down the line, British soft rockers Keane were in at #17 with Strangeland (19,000), while “SNL” musical guests and Internet sensations Karmin snuck into the top 20 at #18 with their debut EP, Hello (19,000). Underwood also topped the iTunes album chart, acing out Silversun Pickups, who were followed by Adele, B.o.B, One Direction, Karmin, Keane, Gotye ‘s Making Mirrors , White and Jones. On the iTunes singles chart, Maroon 5 locked down #1 with “Payphone,” beating out Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” Carly Rae Jepsen ‘s “Call Me Maybe,” Justin Bieber ‘s “Boyfriend” and fun. ‘s “We Are Young.” Flo Rida was at #6 with “Wild Ones,” Nicki Minaj just behind with “Starships,” then One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful,” Jennifer Lopez ‘s “Dance Again” and 2 Chainz ‘s “No Lie.” The top 10 will get shaken up next week with the arrival of Adam Lambert ‘s second major-label album, as well as new discs from Beach House , Godsmack , the “Glee” Cast Graduation album and the newest slab of rockitude from Tenacious D . ‘Glee’ Cast ‘Not Surprised’ By Lindsay Lohan Cameo Drama

‘I mean, you never really know what’s true and what’s not,’ Lea Michele tells MTV News about Lohan’s appearance on the show. By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan on “Glee” Photo: Adam Rose/ FOX On Tuesday night, the long-hyped Lindsay Lohan episode of “Glee” hit the airwaves. Although her appearance was short, it was also full of sweet, self-deprecating humor. The actress, playing herself, was able to make cracks about her contentious public image. Joking on the show that she’s “in full ‘image re-branding mode’ here, people,” Lohan appeared as a judge at Nationals choir competition in Chicago, where the Gleeks of the New Directions were performing for all the glory. Lohan’s glory may have lasted only two minutes and 46 seconds, but she packed some punches, even taking a shot at “The Voice,” which has been going head-to-head with “Glee” network Fox’s own “American Idol” this season. “I show up here and there isn’t even a red button I can push and a chair that can spin me around, where I can then point at a kid onstage and say, ‘I want to work with you’? I’m seriously firing my manager.” Leading up to her cameo, there had been lots of chatter that LaLohan may not have been all that professional about the gig. After being cast on the show in March , rumors began to spread weeks later that the actress was late to set because she had been hitting the party scene right before she had to shoot. While co-star Perez Hilton (who also played a judge on the episode) skirted around the issue when MTV News caught up with him, the show’s stars Lea Michele and Chris Colfer seemed unaware of the controversy. Colfer shared that he was “not surprised, unfortunately” to hear that people had been spreading rumors about her, with his pal Michele adding that everything seemed kosher when she was on set. “I mean, you never really know what’s true and what’s not,” she explained to MTV News at the Fox upfront in New York City this week. “From what we know, she did her stuff and we were busy shooting ours.” Regardless of what really happened when Lohan appeared on the show, perhaps this line stands as her finest statement about her relationship with the public: “Is there anything better than someone making a comeback?” The show’s third season finale, “Goodbye,” airs May 22. Season four will kick off this fall with a spankin’-new Britney Spears tribute episode , as well as cameos by Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker . What did you think of Lindsay’s cameo on “Glee”? How The Possession Poster Raises the Bar For the Horror Genre

It’s really easy to be cynical about horror movie posters. Most of them are garish, Photoshop nightmares unworthy of a second look. But we really owe it to ourselves to bask in the sublime surrealism of the one-sheet for The Possession . A poster like this one, for a low-budget horror film with a decent pedigree (Sam Raimi is among the producers) that will play as late-summer counterprogramming in multiplexes around the country, comes around, oh, never. I’ll grant you that it is of questionable construction. It’s flat and nearly monochromatic, the Photoshop is sloppy in spots (especially where the wrist meets the mouth), and it feels like a detail from the poster for another Raimi film, Drag Me to Hell : Still, there’s beauty in the simplicity. Take away the title, taglines, and credit block and you instantly know this is a person-possessed movie. No weird upside-down people , no impossible-for-even-the-most-elastic-yogi posing , no one stuck to the ceiling — just a person being mauled from the inside out by a demon clawing its way out of that person’s maw. Any other image meant to illustrate “possessed” looks like unicorns and rainbows in comparison. And why not? Reality is always stranger — and scarier — than fiction, and, my God, this really happened! Somewhere, out in the world, someone is telling the story about that time a girl they knew vomited up a gnarled ghoul hand that then ripped her face off. That’s the takeaway, anyhow, when “Based on a True Story” is placed above the poster’s horrific, inspired image. It’s an audacious juxtaposition. For nearly a decade, horror movies brandishing their ripped-from-reality bonafides have hewed to relatively realistic depictions of their content. The Exorcism of Emily Rose , for example, is atmospheric and unsettling in its depiction of a girl lost in foggy desolation. Similarly, the remake of The Amityville Horror exists in a scuzzy, off-balance suburbia, but it’s one that feels relatively in-step with our world. Even the ridiculous, porny poster for The Devil Inside feels grounded in some perversion of reality. Not so for The Possession . It’s a true story spewed forth from the interior worlds of Lovecraft and Dalí. Our first instinct is to laugh at the absurdity of selling a movie using this image as “based on a true story.” But disbelief quickly gives way to something like awe. On one hand it’s a complete inversion of how to market a real-person-possessed movie. Instead of people contorted by unseen supernatural forces — that is, something we can go in believing actually happened — we’re getting a person brutally face-hugged by a tangible hellspawn, a practical and realistic impossibility that subverts the scare power of these sorts of movies. It’s not frightening, after all, if we know it can’t really happen. (Shock cuts only go so far.) On the other hand, it’s a deft commentary on these kinds of films. We all know they’re ridiculous. But you’d never know it to look at their posters. From the images to the copy, they’re humorless voids of self-righteousness, like an ad for a sanctimonious documentary or a foreign art-house film. Except these are ads for movies about a kid puking, what, smoke? A scarf? Oil? Liquid gold? Or being suspended upside down, against one’s control . And on and on. The Possession one-sheet, in the grand Raimi tradition, is self-aware and calls attention to how ridiculous it all is while simultaneously giving us a good, solid modern horror movie image. I’d be surprised if the image on this poster is ever brought to life in The Possession (but here’s hoping!), and time will tell how grossly it misrepresents the tone and content of the film. But all that seems beside the point when you have a poster of such sly wit and artistry. PREVIOUSLY IN ONE-SHEET WONDER The Simple, Fan-Driven Pleasures of Moonrise Kingdom ‘s First Poster Dante A. Ciampaglia is a writer, editor and photographer in New York. You can find him on Twitter , Tumblr , and, occasionally, his blog .

‘Walking Dead’ Cast Reflects On ‘Shakespearean’ Death

‘Once you get to this level of expansion, you have to pop,’ Norman Reedus tells MTV News about Jon Bernthal’s villain, Shane Walsh. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner ‘Walking Dead’ Stars Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus Photo: MTV News The death of Shane Walsh on “The Walking Dead” wasn’t exactly shocking to comic-book readers, though the manner of the divisive character’s exit was certainly a surprise: In the source material, Shane is shot and killed by Carl, whereas on the TV show, the disgruntled ex-cop was stabbed in the heart by his old friend Rick — a change the “Walking Dead” cast has described as nothing short of Shakespearean. “There was so much of the love triangle [between Shane, Rick and Lori] that happened, and that had to go somewhere,” actor Norman Reedus told MTV News. “It’s almost sort of Shakespearean in a way. “[Actor Jon Bernthal] did such a good job with that character and taking it some place,” Reedus continued. “And I think once you get to this level of expansion, you have to pop. … That’s what it felt like to me.” Reedus’ co-stars Steven Yeun and Melissa McBride agreed with his assessment. For them, it was the actual night of shooting Shane’s death that sticks with them the most. “Seeing the work that Jon and [Andrew Lincoln] and everybody put towards that story line, it’s awesome,” Yeun shared. “I remember we gathered to watch that final scene, and it was like, they did it like 50 times, and each time you were just like, ‘Holy F…’ You know? It’s so good.” McBride agreed: “It was so unsettling to see them when we were watching the scene being filmed. It was unsettling to see the two of them in that arrangement there. After all they’d been through, and as close as they’d been, it was very strange.” Strange, but monumental. To date, “Walking Dead” has been largely about Rick and Shane’s story. To lose one of those characters as early as season two definitely marks a major shift for the series. “They started the show together, like best buddies right off the bat,” Reedus said. “And to see that pop at the end was, yeah, it was a big deal.” Were you surprised by Shane’s death? Wiz Khalifa Reveals Collaboration With Cam’ron

‘I’ve been waiting for that collaboration forever,’ Wiz says of his new tracks with the Harlem rapper. By Sowmya Krishnamurthy Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News In what he describes as a long-awaited duet, has announced a new collaboration with one of his favorite rappers, Cam’ron , on Wiz’s upcoming sophomore album, O.N.I.F.C. In an interview with Hard Knock TV , Wiz explained that he worked with the Harlem rapper on two songs, one of which will be featured on his upcoming album (versus the soon-to-be-released Taylor Allderdice mixtape ) in order to give it the proper visibility. “I did that more justice than putting it on the mixtape, because I’ve been waiting for that collaboration forever,” he said. Describing how the partnership came about, Wiz said, “First of all, I’ve been a huge Cam’ron fan forever. Him and Snoop Dogg are my favorite rappers. I’ve been trying to get up with Cam for a long time, but it never really happened. My man [Sam] Crespo, who works at Atlantic … he called Cam and gave Cam my number. Cam texted me, and I was like, ‘Oh sh–, it’s Cam.’ ” Though the “Black and Yellow” rapper didn’t elaborate on what the song will sound like, he did hint that it would be a blend of each artist’s distinct style. “Cam sent me a song and I did my thing on it … and he knocked it right out. It’s real sh– that people want to hear from both of us — that’s why I put it on the album. Because the sh– I did for him is me going into his world, and then the sh– he did for me is the polar opposite.” O.N.I.F.C. is slated to be released this year. During a February appearance on “Sway in the Morning,” Wiz told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway that the title is an acronym for “Only N—a in First Class,” inspired by Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy’s H.N.I.C. album title. ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Choreographer Gets 10 Years In Prison

Alex Da Silva was convicted of rape and assault against former dance students. By Katie Byrne Alex Da Silva (file) Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images “So You Think You Can Dance” fans haven’t seen Alex Da Silva on the show since season four back in 2008, and there’s a reason the choreographer has been off the radar: He has been in jail since being charged with raping a former dance student and assaulting another one. On Friday (January 27), Da Silva was sentenced to 10 years in prison for those crimes, TMZ reports. While the 43-year-old was accused of raping and sexually assaulting four women, he was convicted in September of only one count of rape and one count of assault with intent to commit rape; the jury was deadlocked on the other charges. He was arrested back in 2009 and charged with multiple felonies. Unable to pay the bail set at $2 million, Da Silva has remained in jail for the past two years. On top of his 10 years in prison, he is now required to register as a sex offender for life. Da Silva appeared on seasons one through four of “So You Think You Can Dance” as a guest choreographer specializing in Salsa dancing. In season two, eventual winner Benji Schwimmer named his Da Silva-choreographed mambo as his favorite routine of the show. After his arrest, Da Silva did an interview with SalsaFreak.com to clear his name, insisting that he had done nothing wrong with his students. “I know the truth, and I don’t even know who the others are,” he said, claiming to not even be acquainted with some of his accusers. “It’s all a bunch of lies, and people just want to bring me down. If something like that really happened, then they should have gone to the police that night, or the same day, but it was never that way. I have too much to lose. I don’t need that type of thing in my life.”
