Get Well: Nelson Mandela In Serious Condition In South African Hospital With Severe Lung Infection

Again??? Sweet baby Jesus. Nelson Mandela In Serious Condition With Lung Infection Via NYPost Former South African President Nelson Mandela is in “serious but stable” condition after being taken to a hospital to be treated for a lung infection, the government said Saturday, prompting an outpouring of concern from admirers of a man who helped to end white racist rule. Mandela’s wife, humanitarian activist Graca Machel, canceled an appearance at an international forum on hunger and nutrition in London on Saturday, citing “personal reasons,” said Colleen Harris, a spokeswoman for the meeting. Mandela, who is 94 years old, was treated in a hospital several times in recent months, with the last discharge coming on April 6 after doctors drained fluid from his lung area after diagnosing him with pneumonia. He has been particularly vulnerable to respiratory problems since contracting tuberculosis during his 27-year imprisonment under apartheid. “During the past few days, former President Nelson Mandela has had a recurrence of lung infection,” said a statement from the office of President Jacob Zuma. “This morning at about 1.30a.m., his condition deteriorated and he was transferred to a Pretoria hospital.” It said Mandela was receiving expert medical care and “doctors are doing everything possible to make him better and comfortable.” Zuma wished Mandela a quick recovery on behalf of the government and the nation and requested that the media and the public respect the privacy of the former leader and his family, the statement said. “We need to hold our thoughts and keep him in our minds,” said Mac Maharaj, the president’s spokesman. “He is a fighter, he has recovered many times from very serious conditions and he will be with us. Let’s pray for him and help him to get better.” Let’s all pray for Mr. Mandela’s health. Image via AP Continue reading

13 More People Shot Overnight In Chicago The spree of Summer violence in Chicago is underway and doesn’t seem to be getting any better. At least 13 people were reported shot yesterday in the gang via Chicago Tribune A man was shot multiple times in the Sheridan Park neighborhood last night and left in critical condition, one of at least 13 people shot across the city Friday and early Saturday morning, officials said. Paramedics took a 25-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, according to Chicago Fire Department Chief Juan Hernandez. In a separate incident tonight, at least three people were shot in the 5900 block of South Wood Street about 7 p.m., according to authorities. One man shot in the torso or abdomen was taken in serious-to-critical condition to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, while another man was taken in fair-to-serious condition to Holy Cross Hospital, according to the fire department and police. Another man, whose age wasn’t available, was shot about 8:18 p.m. in the 5400 block of South Albany Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood. He was shot all over his body and police said he was in stable condition. A 25-year-old walked into West Suburban Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his ankle about 7:10 p.m., Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said. In earlier attacks Friday afternoon, two teenage boys were shot in separate incidents in the Cragin and South Shore neighborhoods, authorities said. A 16-year-old boy was stabilized and taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital following a shooting where a group of boys or men in a white SUV drove up, stopped and at least one person got out and shot at the boy, hitting him in the leg. The boy was believed to have shouted out slogans for a gang he belongs to as the SUV drove up, and those in the SUV belonged to a rival gang and shot him after he shouted the slogans, a police source said. Earlier in the South Shore neighborhood, a 15-year-old boy was taken to Jackson Park Hospital with his condition stabilized after he was found wounded, according to the fire department. Early Saturday morning, two men were shot in the East Garfield Park neighborhood in an attack witnessed by paramedics driving through the area. They’re both in serious-to-critical condition. A couple minutes before that, a 23-year-old man was shot in the buttocks and taken to Roseland Hospital. Two others were shot in their legs early Saturday morning in the 3800 block of West 28th Street in the Little Village neighborhood. An upside down crown — a gang symbol inverted and meant to show disrespect — was painted on a dumpster across from where the two were shot. Police said both men were gang members who did not cooperate with investigators. There has to be some way to stop this madness from happening every year. SMH! Continue reading
