Kristen Stewart Is ‘Gorgeous,’ Other ‘Snow White’ Director Says

‘Nobody’s backed off,’ Tarsem tells MTV News of competing ‘Snow White’ projects. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart as “Snow White” Photo: Universal In one corner of the fairy tale-meets-Hollywood world, there is Kristen Stewart and mighty Universal Pictures. In the other, there is Julia Roberts and upstart Relativity Pictures. Both sides are pushing forward with “Snow White” adaptations . Only one can boast of having, in Stewart, one of the biggest young names in the business. But the director of the other “Snow White,” Tarsem , not only isn’t worried, but paid Stewart a high compliment when we caught up with him at San Diego Comic-Con. “She’s gorgeous,” he told us, adding that he’d only seen her onscreen work in David Fincher’s “Panic Room.” “She’s great.” For his Snow White, Tarsem cast up-and-comer Lily Collins, looping her into a production that has already kicked off and which will hit theaters months ahead of Stewart’s in 2012. “For me, when I looked at it, I thought there’s only room for one of these,” he explained of the two competing films. “And it looks like there’s more. Nobody’s backed off. I just know that we were ready so much earlier. And thank God for Julia, because when she came in, I got everything my way.” While we have seen photos of Stewart , as well as co-stars Liam Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” thus far from Tarsem’s film, we’ve only seen Collins in character . So what type of evil queen will Roberts end up being? “A mixed-up queen,” Tarsem told us. “I don’t know how to do for the ‘now you shall’ kind of person. For me, [it's] the personality of a person who looks into the mirror and does all the evil deeds she needs to do. Like serial killers, you outsource your evil: The devil made me do it or I hear voices. It’s kind of one of those people. She does what she does, but she thinks it comes from a place where the person in the mirror tells it to her.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Brothers Grimm: Snow White.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Jay-Z And Kanye West’s ‘Otis’ Video To Premiere Thursday!

Watch the Throne clip will hit MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV.com and BET at 8:56 p.m. ET/PT. By Rob Markman Jay-Z and Kanye West in their “Otis” video Photo: Roc-A-Fella Jay-Z and Kanye West will continue to keep fans watching. Three days after the monumental release of their collaborative album Watch the Throne, Hov and Yeezy will premiere the LP’s first video, for “Otis,” on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV.com and BET on Thursday at 8:56 p.m. ET/PT. Immediately following the premiere, the Spike Jonze-directed music video will air on MTV Jams and MTV Hits, with an encore airing on MTV2 at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Read all about how Jay and Kanye are breaking the mold with Watch the Throne. “Otis” captivated music fans when it premiered last month on DJ Funkmaster Flex’s Hot 97 radio show in New York. The song, which samples Otis Redding’s 1966 rendition of “Try a Little Tenderness,” finds Jay and ‘Ye rapping eight bars apiece before passing the mic back and forth several times during the track’s two-minute-and-58-second run. There is no catchy chorus or melodic refrain, just the dusty record loop and hard-hitting rhymes, which made the song an instant fan favorite. Days after the song’s release, two pictures from the video’s set were leaked online. One photo showed a large American flag draped over a blue wall, correlating with Givenchy designer Ricardo Tisci’s cover art for the single. The second pic was of Jonze and West on set, but it ultimately revealed nothing about the clip’s theme or overall feel. What are the critics saying about Watch the Throne ? So far, the “Otis” video has been shrouded in mystery, much like the Watch the Throne album itself. Because the LP didn’t leak early like most albums these days do, fans didn’t get their first listen to the album until it was officially released Monday. Now they get to see WTT ‘s first visual when the “Otis” video premieres Thursday. In addition to the premiere, fans can check out MTV News’ “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (August 10) at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com and watch as industry experts weigh in on Watch the Throne and what to expect from the joint album’s first video. ‘Jackass’ Team Planning Ryan Dunn MTV Tribute

Director Jeff Tremaine hopes special will ‘celebrate his life.’ By James Montgomery Ryan Dunn Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images In the time since his death, “Jackass” star Ryan Dunn has been remembered by his friends and fans, and his life was celebrated in a special tribute video played during a memorial service held in Los Angeles. Now, his “Jackass” associates are planning to honor his legacy with an MTV special, which will feature his greatest moments — and never-before-seen outtakes — from the wildly popular stunt show and subsequent feature films. That’s according to “Jackass” director Jeff Tremaine, who spoke to entertainment site Screen Junkies following MTV’s presentation at the annual Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles. “We’re gearing up to do a tribute to Ryan,” Tremaine told the site. “That’s our next project. [His death] hurt pretty bad. It’s hurt everybody, but we want to celebrate his life and show everybody. We have just such an amazing bank of footage of him. We’re going to dig it all up so we’ll discover it too.” A spokesperson for MTV couldn’t be reached for comment by press time, but Tremaine said he hopes the Dunn special will air in the fall and will include new interviews with the late star’s “Jackass” associates. He also hinted that the show may finally reveal some classic footage that, so far, has remained in the vaults of Dickhouse Productions — for various reasons. “There’s always been the Van Surfing, him and Chris [Pontius] re-enacting a scene from ‘Teen Wolf’ that didn’t go well,” he said. “Ryan was riding on the roof of the van and the van was speeding towards a body of water, stopped a little bit short. He made it to the water but the water was only like five inches deep, slammed pretty bad. We decided not to air that because we thought that kids might imitate it too easily.” Related Videos Remembering Ryan Dunn Related Photos Ryan Dunn: A Career In Photos

Drake Inspires Glasses Malone To Carve His Own ‘Niche’

‘I wish I could sing sometimes, but I can’t,’ Cash Money rapper says. By Rob Markman Glasses Malone Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Glasses Malone Life must be good on Cash Money Records. Just ask California rapper Glasses Malone who is set to drop his debut album, Beach Cruiser, on the Birdman-helmed label in August. The label’s roster boasts Baby himself, Lil Wayne and Bow Wow, and then there’s label subsidiary Young Money, which houses Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga. “Hell, yeah, it’s competitive,” Glasses said when asked about the amount of talent on the two labels. “Let’s face it, Drake is probably one of the most, if not the most talented artist right now. This dude can be into a nice verse and kick some singin’ sh–, after being into a nice verse. Not an all right verse, he’ll be into a nice verse and then start singin’ and hold a great pitch. And then you look at Nicki Minaj, it’s success stories.” G. Malone is such a fan of Drizzy’s crooning that he sometimes wishes that he himself could hold a tune, but by the same token, he is aware of his own fanbase, which looks to him for harder, street-bred material. “I wish I could sing sometimes, but I can’t, so what I try to do is keep carving my niche at this gangsta sh–,” he told Mixtape Daily. “I figure, I can’t top Drake doin’ what he’s doin’. Drake is that n—a, he got it together. Wayne is that n—a, but I could make them n—as like, ‘Man that n—a G’s sh– hard.’ And once you do that, you win.” For Glasses, Cash Money and Young Money’s talented roster ultimately fuels his drive. “I use their situation as inspiration to know that the sky’s the limit,” he said. One of the perks to having such high-profile labelmates is the potential for good features. But on Beach Cruiser, Malone refused to force the issue. He has already recorded with Birdman and Wayne for his album and a number of other Cash Money artists on various side projects. When it comes to Drake, however, Glasses would rather wait until the time and the vibe is right. “Me and Drake, we talked a couple of times. We barely finna do somethin’ now. I just couldn’t figure out a song for Drake. I don’t talk about girls,” the Watts rapper said about his and Drizzy’s respective styles. “My songs wouldn’t be the right songs. He really appreciates women. I have to find the right niche.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Glasses Malone Drake

Sean Kingston Promises ‘Straight Heat’ On Next Album

Recovering singer says during ‘MTV First: Sean Kingston’ he hopes to release new music by year’s end. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sean Kingston Photo: MTV News After recalling the incidents of his “life-or-death” accident during “MTV First: Sean Kingston,” the singer opened up about his plans to get back to work and release new music by year’s end. “[I'm] focused on music again, about to start working on a new album and get back out there again,” he said during the chat at his house in Miami. “I’m excited about the project. It’s going to be really dope.” Given the intensity of his accident and the recovery process, Kingston has a whole new perspective on songwriting. “I haven’t lost no memory; I think I’m even better at writing and stuff,” he said. “Being in the hospital, having all this time off, I’ve been writing and coming up with different ideas. I’m ready to go.” Kingston is best known for his reggae-infused pop tracks like “Beautiful Girls” and “Take You There,” and his still-in-the-works new album will certainly touch on the sound that catapulted him to stardom. “I’m going back in with my producer J.R. [Rotem], who did really big records for me. I’m going back to the whole reggae, island-pop thing. I’m going back to my roots,” he said. “I think it’s definitely going to open up a lot of people, because now I got a story to tell,” he later said. “The world needs to know what I’m coming with, ’cause I’m coming with straight heat. I’ve been down. I’ve been in the house coming up with ideas. My producer J.R., he’s a hitmaker. It’s gonna be my third album, I’m older now. It’s gonna be crazy.” While in the hospital, Kingston had his jaw wired shut for a time. It was a situation Kanye West once found himself in that sparked his first hit “Through the Wire.” Kingston certainly wouldn’t rule out writing a song about his recovery — or working with ‘Ye, for that matter. “Oh man, he’s in my top five rappers,” he said. “I met him twice, and he’s a great person. He’s definitely talented. I’m actually waiting for him and the Jay-Z album [ Watch the Throne ] to drop. I’d be more than excited to collaborate with him.” Kingston — the Jamaican-American singer who broke onto the scene with the “Stand by Me”-sampling song “Beautiful Girls” and scored another hit with the Justin Bieber collabo “Eenie Meenie” last year — was rushed to the hospital May 29 after a jet-ski crash. He explained to Sway that he was going about 35 miles an hour when he miscalculated how high the tide had risen and collided with a bridge. What are you expecting from new Sean Kingston music? Lady Gaga: Straight, No Chaser

We observe Gaga in her natural habitat, with a good bottle of whiskey, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery What is Lady Gaga’s blood doing on the floor? We’ll find out soon … Photo: James Montgomery/MTV News Lady Gaga is sitting down, which is probably a good thing, considering she’s wearing 6-inch heels and has spent roughly seven hours drinking whiskey with dudes who look like they were roadies for Bang Tango . Drinking wasn’t the only thing she did, of course. She also danced, vamped, sang, bled and underwent more costume changes than Evander Berry Wall — all over the span of one very long day on one very big soundstage in New York City. I’m not allowed to write about exactly what she was shooting (at least not yet), but suffice it to say, Gaga certainly deserved a few minutes of rest. Especially since she had spent the first part of the day filming a wearing an outfit that could only be described as “houndstooth overdrive.” And yet, throughout the day, as the top-secret shoot went on and on, I never heard her complain — not even close. At one point, during a performance setup, when the director asked if she’d be willing to film another take, she joked, “My voice can only last for another hour and a half … the rest of me can go all night.” Everyone laughed, and not just because it was a funny line. There was an air of astonishment mixed in too. Simply put, no one seemed to believe that a star of this caliber would be this willing to work. And then work some more. While it was certainly amazing to watch Gaga come to life when the camera was rolling, her work ethic isn’t exactly breaking news. In a way, it was even more fascinating to observe her in the moments when it wasn’t. Last year, I followed her every step at the Video Music Awards and discovered that, beneath the 35 pounds of Argentinean beef, she was actually a pretty normal person. That was only amplified Monday, on this soundstage in New York, in the rare moments she wasn’t wowing everyone in attendance. Surrounded by her closest friends — all of whom were extras in the shoot, and some of whom came dressed in their Steel Panther finery — she was decidedly down-to-earth. Shockingly average, even. She cracked jokes, held hands, poured drinks. She danced and cooed with her old friend Lady Starlight while “Heavy Metal Lover,” a standout track on her Born This Way album, blared overhead. She whooped for joy whenever someone she hadn’t seen in a while (and given her schedule, that was pretty much everybody ) appeared on set. In fact, she seemed very much like every 25-year-old you’d meet, despite all evidence to the contrary. Getting to be a fly on the wall is certainly one of the perks of this job; it allows you to see the mega-famous at their least guarded — for better or (as is sometimes the case) much worse. But it’s the few instances I’ve been able to hover around Gaga’s inner circle that remain the most revelatory, mostly because, as I wrote last year, her public persona is somewhere along the lines of “a pneumatic lion tamer with a penchant for creative haberdashery, or a fire-breathing neo-Shiva in sunglasses.” To see her unwind with her pals, well, let’s just say it’s the kind of thing you don’t forget, mostly because it’s the most normal thing imaginable. Which, given pretty much everything you think you know about her, is downright unimaginable. So while I can’t tell you what I watched being filmed, I can tell you that Lady Gaga enjoys Jameson and has excellent comedic timing. And that told me more about her than any of her videos ever could. To a certain extent, we all think we know who Gaga is, even if that’s not really the case. At ease, with a glass of strong booze, enveloped by her confidants — that’s the girl few of us get to meet, which is a shame. She seems like a really fun person to hang out with. What do you imagine Lady Gaga is like behind the scenes? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos A Day In The Life Of Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Katy Perry Sets Singles Record With ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’

Perry breaks Billboard Mainstream Top 40 record following her nine VMA nominations for tracks from Teenage Dream. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: John Parra/ WireImage It took her a bit longer than expected, but Katy Perry’s persistence and the inescapable, saxophone-bleating 1980s vibe of “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” were just too much for music fans to resist. Perry, who is nominated for a leading nine Moonmen at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards , finally snagged the record as the first album from the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart to have five #1 singles. According to The Hollywood Reporter , Perry’s Teenage Dream album is the first in the nearly 19-year history of the chart to achieve the feat, thanks to “Friday Night” bumping up one spot to #1 this week. “Friday Night” joins the other chart-toppers from Perry’s Dream album, which include the title track, “California Gurls,” “Firework” and “E.T.” The record puts her in pretty impressive company, landing Perry just ahead of Lady Gaga ( The Fame ) and Justin Timberlake ( FutureSex/LoveSounds, whose albums yielded four #1s apiece. “Friday Night” also broke some other new ground, setting the high watermark for most weekly plays in the chart’s history (12,468), blowing past the old record, which she also held with “E.T.” (12,361). Even more impressive, the five singles from Dream account for five of the six songs with the chart’s highest-ever weekly spin totals, with Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything” acting as the spoiler at #4 with 12,107. The next potential record to fall could be the biggie Perry’s been waiting for. She’s still looking to become just the second artist ever to mark five #1 singles from the same album on the Billboard Hot 100, a mark held by Michael Jackson’s Bad . She’s got four #1s already and “Friday” moved up from 3 to 2 on last week’s chart, so it could happen. Jay-Z And Kanye West Shuffle Watch the Throne Tour Dates

‘We pushed it back to really route it and put other dates on there,’ Jay says of pushing launch to October. By Rob Markman Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Fans eager to experience Watch the Throne live are going to have to wait an extra month before they can see Jay-Z and Kanye West in concert. On Tuesday morning, Live Nation started a pre-sale for the WTT Tour, but the original run, which was set to begin on September 22 in Detroit, is no longer. Instead Yeezy and Hov will now kick things off on October 29 in Atlanta, Georgia. The original 24-date tour is now slated for 17 stops, but Live Nation’s website says that more dates will be announced soon. The October 29 Atlanta date was in fact on the original schedule, as was the October 30, Greensboro, North Carolina, date and the November 1 show in Baltimore. The remaining concerts are all rescheduled. Look back at the events leading up to Watch the Throne ‘s August 8 release. There is still no New York City date on paper yet, though Hov confirmed that there will be one during a radio interview with Hot 97′s Angie Martinez on Monday, when he also denied rumors of a feud between him and Kanye . The Throne will stop at the nearby Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, for two nights and will also land in West’s hometown of Chicago on December 1. “That’s an old list we had to push that back, because it was like, we tried to put it out in pre-order and all the lines got jammed,” Jay told Martinez in the interview as she read off the tour’s original dates. “We pushed it back to really route it and put other dates on there. We’ll probably put four New York dates there instead.” Check out exclusive photos of Jay-Z and Kanye West in the studio. As of now, the last date on the schedule is across the northern border on December 18 in Vancouver. In the radio interview, Jay said that he and Kanye hadn’t worked out the performance details and couldn’t confirm who would hit the stage when or how the two would interact. “We hadn’t worked out those details yet but considerable time will be spent onstage together,” he said.
