Kings Of Leon Doc Director Unfazed By Band’s Drama

‘They’re family,’ ‘Talihina Sky’ helmer Stephen Mitchell says, confident that Kings will regroup after canceling U.S. tour. By James Montgomery Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon Photo: Theo Wargo/ WireImage For all the unedited, un-sober moments in the Kings of Leon ‘s “Talihina Sky” documentary (and there are a lot of them), none stands out quite like frontman Caleb Followill’s bleary-eyed, whiskey-and-marijuana-soaked confessional, which unspools toward the end of the film and is a jaw-dropper, to say the very least. When the film premiered back in April, the scene stuck in most folks’ memories because it was so unfiltered — Followill makes no attempt to hide the fact that he’s rifling through inebriants, which is noteworthy since he and his bandmates executive-produced the film and surely had final say over what made the cut and what didn’t. But given the events of the past few weeks, as the Kings canceled their U.S. tour after Followill’s bizarre (and, many seem to think, drunken ) onstage behavior at a show in Dallas , the footage takes on a decidedly darker tone … and hints that perhaps the frontman’s problems go much deeper than “exhaustion,” as the band claimed in their cancellation statement. So, with “Talihina” set to premiere August 21 on Showtime, MTV Radio spoke to its director, Stephen Mitchell, about that notorious scene and whether he now regrets keeping it in the film. “No, and for the record, I might have been more drunk and stoned than Caleb during that interview,” Mitchell laughed. “That was a night he and I sat down, actually it was during the Only By the Night sessions, and after working in the studio all day, he said, ‘I want you to come over to the house and let’s sit down.’ … I think it was an amazing conversation, and I think there’s a lot of the film that, looking back, [I] have regrets about showing this or doing that. We made our decisions a while ago and we’re sticking to them and living with them. “But sure, they’re my friends, and I care about them, and a lot of this is hard for me to watch and I’m sure it’s very hard for them to watch too,” he added. “So, I guess the only thing I can say is we put the honesty out there and hopefully people at least respect the boys for not bullsh—ing them.” Mitchell — who has known the Followills since the early 2000s, when they were first working toward a record contract in Nashville — said that while he hasn’t spoken to the band since they scrapped their tour, he’s not worried about their future. Nor did he find the reaction of Caleb’s brother Jared (who took his brother to task on Twitter following the Dallas show) to be anything out of the ordinary. After all, this is a band of brothers — and a cousin — first and foremost. “That’s the way they always were. Listen, I wasn’t down there, I haven’t even had a chance to talk to the guys yet … about what the heck happened. But I think some of the draw to these guys is that they are brothers and cousins; there’s a magnetism to that,” he said. “They say anything and everything to each other, and it is how they sort of work things out internally; they’re very vocal. And I had to learn a long time ago that they’re not yelling at each other, they’re just communicating, and it’s loud. And sometimes the stuff they say to each other … you’ve got to have some thick skin to be walking around with those guys.” Mitchell said that it’s that familial bond that has helped them through tough times in the past … and will undoubtedly help them navigate through their current drama too. “It’s a fabric of the band, the roots of the band, they’re family, and I think that’s a reason that they’ve been able to find a common ground to stick together and make five albums over, what, eight-plus years?” he said. “That’s really hard to do. There’s not many bands making two albums, let alone five, during that time … and I’m not a band spokesperson, I can’t speak for them, they make the great music, but I believe in them and I think the family side of it will be the same reason we end up seeing more great shows and hearing more great albums from them in the future.”

Nicki Minaj ‘Raises The Bar’ On Britney Spears Tour

‘I wanted my set to be more than an opening act, ’cause, you know, I did that already,’ she tells MTV News of Femme Fatale Tour. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj is known for her brightly colored persona, music and wardrobe, so it’s no surprise that the New York rapper has managed to win over pop audiences night after night on the Femme Fatale Tour , during which she fiercely graces the stage before Britney Spears . Minaj’s high-octane energy and ability to put a pop spin on her hip-hop tracks shines through in her warm-up show. Her theater-kid side also comes out in the multi-media set, complete with dance routines, videos and Minaj’s many alter egos . The ability for a pop audience to identify with Minaj’s sometimes NSFW themes is even a shock to the head Barbie herself. “Yeah, I’m always surprised,” she told MTV News. “I don’t really expect them to know all the records, but I guess it just kind of transcends all genres of music at this point.” Minaj set out to give her fans, both old and new, a spectacle. “I wanted my set to be more than an opening act, ’cause, you know, I did that already,” she said, referring to her opening gig alongside mentor Lil Wayne on the I Am Still Music Tour . “I always like to raise the bar for myself, and that’s what I did. I think it’s important to give people what they paid for.” In addition to a set full of fan favorites that are earning her more and more Barbies each and every night, Minaj also has multiple costume changes that are sexy, cool and tough all at the same time. “I didn’t want to do a lot of color. I sort of wanted to tone it down and sort of bring the color back from my own tour, so I wanted it to be very sophisticated and sort of, you know, futuristic and all over the place,” she said. “But sort of cagey and sort of epic.” Have you seen Nicki Minaj’s opening set for Britney? ‘Honestly, I don’t remember much. I only know I can recover from here,’ singer tweets after being attacked in New York. By Kara Warner Gavin DeGraw Photo: Jeff Fusco/ Getty Images After suffering a brutal attack early Monday morning in New York, Gavin DeGraw has been released from the hospital and is said to be on the road to recovery. A rep for the “I Don’t Wanna Be” singer confirmed that DeGraw was discharged Tuesday evening (August 9) from Bellevue Hospital, where he was being treated for a concussion, broken nose, black eyes, cuts and bruises sustained when a group of unknown assailants attacked him in Manhattan’s East Village. The attack is still under investigation, and no arrests have been made, but the 34-year-old took to Twitter to say a few words about the incident and to let his fans know that he plans to get well soon. “Hi my friends,” he tweeted to his more than 60,000 followers. “Honestly, I don’t remember much. I only know I can recover from here. Thank u all for your genuine concern. I love u guys.” Despite being released from the hospital, DeGraw was forced to cancel several upcoming appearances. “As a result of Gavin’s injuries, he won’t be performing in Wantagh, NY on August 12 or Mansfield, MA on August 13,” his rep said in a statement to MTV News. ‘Jackass’ Team Planning Ryan Dunn MTV Tribute

Director Jeff Tremaine hopes special will ‘celebrate his life.’ By James Montgomery Ryan Dunn Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images In the time since his death, “Jackass” star Ryan Dunn has been remembered by his friends and fans, and his life was celebrated in a special tribute video played during a memorial service held in Los Angeles. Now, his “Jackass” associates are planning to honor his legacy with an MTV special, which will feature his greatest moments — and never-before-seen outtakes — from the wildly popular stunt show and subsequent feature films. That’s according to “Jackass” director Jeff Tremaine, who spoke to entertainment site Screen Junkies following MTV’s presentation at the annual Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles. “We’re gearing up to do a tribute to Ryan,” Tremaine told the site. “That’s our next project. [His death] hurt pretty bad. It’s hurt everybody, but we want to celebrate his life and show everybody. We have just such an amazing bank of footage of him. We’re going to dig it all up so we’ll discover it too.” A spokesperson for MTV couldn’t be reached for comment by press time, but Tremaine said he hopes the Dunn special will air in the fall and will include new interviews with the late star’s “Jackass” associates. He also hinted that the show may finally reveal some classic footage that, so far, has remained in the vaults of Dickhouse Productions — for various reasons. “There’s always been the Van Surfing, him and Chris [Pontius] re-enacting a scene from ‘Teen Wolf’ that didn’t go well,” he said. “Ryan was riding on the roof of the van and the van was speeding towards a body of water, stopped a little bit short. He made it to the water but the water was only like five inches deep, slammed pretty bad. We decided not to air that because we thought that kids might imitate it too easily.” Related Videos Remembering Ryan Dunn Related Photos Ryan Dunn: A Career In Photos

Carey Mulligan, Marcus Mumford Engaged

Mumford & Sons frontman and ‘An Education’ actress have been dating for five months. By Terri Schwartz Marcus Mumford Photo: Gus Stewart/ Getty Images Carey Mulligan is about to get “an education” in marriage. According to Us, Mulligan is engaged (for real this time) to boyfriend Marcus Mumford. The Mumford & Sons frontman, 24, reportedly popped the question to Mulligan, 26. The pair first got together five months ago, when the “Drive” actress went to a secret Mumford & Sons show with her buddy Jake Gyllenhaal. (Mumford and Mulligan are also said to have been childhood pen pals through their church in London.) Their supposed engagement was first reported on July 26, but Us claimed on Wednesday (August 3) that they got the latest scoop from an insider close to the couple. “They’re a great couple,” the source told the magazine, “very sweet.” Both stars had recently split with their significant others when they reconnected in February. Mulligan split with her longtime boyfriend and “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” costar Shia LaBeouf in October, while Mumford broke up with singer Laura Marling around the same time. When MTV News caught up with the Oscar-nominated Brit at San Diego Comic-Con , she was keen to talk about the other love story in her life: Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of “The Great Gatsby.” It turns out, despite her fianc

Jay-Z, Kanye Enlist Lucky Few Producers For Watch The Throne

While vets like Swizz Beatz, RZA and Neptunes contributed, newcomers Lex Luger, Southside and Jugganauts also got in the mix. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Smith Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Daniel Boczarski/ Getty Images High-profile albums call for high-profile producers. So it should be no surprise that for Watch the Throne, Jay-Z and Kanye West recruited the likes of Swizz Beatz , the Neptunes , RZA and Pete Rock to help them craft a soundbed for their eagerly anticipated joint LP. It wasn’t all about the veterans, however. The Throne also gave some relative newcomers a chance to contribute. “They reached out to me for the ‘See Me Now’ record; I co-produced that with Kanye,” Virginia producer Lex Luger said about ‘Ye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy bonus track. “So after that he wanted some more material, I flew to New York, and we were just vibing for a little while. He picked, like, two or three tracks, but he really liked that ‘H.A.M.’ track. It’s a blessing.” In 2010, Luger broke out of relative obscurity after producing Waka Flocka Flame’s “Hard in Da Paint” and Rick Ross’ street anthem “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast).” Recognized for his frantic synth keys, violent drum hits and hyped-up production style, Luger has since gone on to do beats for Wiz Khalifa, Soulja Boy and Fabolous, but raised his profile considerably with the Hov and Yeezy track. “H.A.M.” was the first leak from Watch the Throne and will now appear as a bonus track on the deluxe version of the album, as will “Illest Mother—-er Alive,” which was produced by Luger’s buddy Southside. Like Lex, Southside gained fame making beats on Waka Flocka Flame’s Flockaveli album. With his Southern-fried sound, Southside was surprised that the Throne chose his track to include as a bonus track on the album. “It was on some straight trap music as they call it. Like, I couldn’t believe that they did that beat,” he said. “Working with them, that was crazy. That’s a moment I’ll never forget. I hope I get a lot more of those moments.” Sham “Sak Pase” Joseph and Verse Simmonds (collectively known as the Jugganauts) are no strangers to hitmaking. Together, along with reggae/pop group Rock City, the duo helped write and produce Rihanna’s “Man Down.” For Hov and Yeezy, they experimented with dubstep on “Who Gon Stop Me” and slowed things up for “Made in America.” The two tracks couldn’t be more different. On “Who Gon Stop Me,” Kanye and Jay deliver chest-pounding proclamations over an electro-infused dance track. “Made in America” is much more soothing, as the two MCs reminisce on their come-up. On the hook, Frank Ocean sings passionately about the black experience in America, paying homage to Malcolm X, Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King in his lyrics. After getting a call from Def Jam VP of A&R Bu Thiam to submit tracks for WTT, the production pair got to work. “What we did is, we locked in a week, we just went crazy on everything Jay and Kanye,” Simmonds told MTV News of the Jugganauts’ big chance. “I remember telling Sham, I was like, ‘Yo, I think this dubstep stuff is going to be the next new flavor that everybody gotta be on. It gotta have a hip-hop feel to it still.’ ” On August 8, fans will finally be able to hear the long-awaited Throne album, which was first announced as an EP in August 2010. The project has since turned into a full-length project that has had the rap world buzzing for the first half of 2011. The recording — which took place in Paris, Australia and the Mercer Hotel in New York City — has resulted in a 12-track album with four bonus songs on the deluxe version. The wait is almost over! Watch the Throne Week is on! Check in with MTV News every day until Wednesday, August 10, for exclusive content surrounding the release of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s eagerly anticipated LP. ‘Dark Knight Rises,’ ‘Hunger Games’: Our Favorite 2012 Sneak Peeks

First looks at a dapper Bruce Banner in ‘Avengers’ and a rather emo ‘Spider-Man’ also top our list of the best reveals so far. By Eric Ditzian Christian Bale and Tom Hardy film “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Getty Images Hey, wait! We thought that summer was all about unwinding — kicking back, catching up, taking a breather from the relentless go-go-go of our interconnected century. Not so much! Fact is, many of next year’s most anticipated films are currently shooting or are deep into post-production work and, as is usually the case these days, studios and the paparazzi have been delivering a steady stream of sneak peeks at the movies we can’t wait to check out in 2012. Here are our picks for the five coolest early looks to surface in the last few weeks. Batman, Meet Bane’s Pain The teaser trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” made clear that, for all of Bruce Wayne’s fancy-schmancy gadgets, we’d be seeing some old-school, hand-to-hand combat between Batman and his adversary, the villainous Bane. This new set photo shows us just how intense that hand-to-hand (and hand-to-throat) fighting will be. What’s doubly intriguing about this photo is the scar running along the back of Bane’s neck. According to DC Comics lore, Bane becomes a test subject for an experimental drug called Venom, which he becomes so addicted to he’ll die without it. The scar could well be an indication of director Christopher Nolan’s continued quest to bring realism to Gotham City, with the scar a gnarly reminder of Bane’s chemically twisted personality. Dr. Banner, You’ve Changed Metamorphosis is at the heart of who Bruce Banner is, so it makes a certain sort of sense that the actor behind the character (and his green-skinned alter ego, the Hulk) has changed more than any other in the contemporary Marvel movie universe. First, it was Eric Bana, then Edward Norton and, now, we get Mark Ruffalo. And in the “Avengers” teaser trailer that debuted at the end of “Captain America,” we get the first-ever look at Ruffalo in character as Banner. He’s smart, he’s skeptical, he’s a snappy dresser. So this is a good start. But we’ll be keeping an eye out for a look at Ruffalo, gussied up in layers of CG magic, as the Hulk himself. Battle Rihanna Last week’s “Battleship” trailer is nothing short of effing crazy: transforming alien ships, Brooklyn Decker playing kissy face in a bikini and peg weapons directly pulled from the board game on which the film is based. Tucked into all this bang-whiz-pow madness are two fleeting shots of Rihanna making her film debut as a naval officer coming face-to-ship with some aliens here to cause humanity great physical harm. She doesn’t get to utter a line, but hey, neither did Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the Victoria’s Secret model-turned-actress, in the first few “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” trailers. So for now, while we can’t say for certain Ri can deliver a convincing line reading, we do know she’s quite OK looking scared as hell on camera. The Ultimate Yogi At San Diego Comic-Con last month, Andrew Garfield told MTV News he modeled his wiry Spider-Man after the version in the “Ultimate” series of comics. But “The Amazing Spider-Man,” it seems from the first teaser trailer, is at least as influenced by director Marc Webb’s indie-emo roots as it is by comics lore. This Peter Parker is something of a tortured soul, internalizing the pain of his parents’ seeming abandonment and, in this screen grab, striking a kind of deep-in-thought yoga pose. As new footage comes out in the months ahead, we’ll be waiting to see how deeply the film dives into the existential crisis of being a nerdy superhero and how much Webb lets Parker (and Spidey) fly. Brooklyn, Obviously Remember when “Twilight” fans freaked out about pasty old Robert Pattinson becoming steamy, super old Edward Cullen? How’d that turn out? Entertainment Weekly ‘s cover photo of the boys of “The Hunger Games,” and the decidedly mixed reaction to it, will likely stand as yet another example of dedicated fiction fans rebelling against the cinematic representations of characters they’ve been imagining in their heads for years. We’re trusting in Lionsgate to get everything right. That’s what they did in casting Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. And we see no reason to second-guess Liam Hemsworth as Gale and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta, even if (gasp!) Hutcherson didn’t don contact lenses to mimic his character’s baby blues. Miranda Cosgrove Calls Best Coast Video Cameo ‘Surreal’

‘She’s really like your best friend,’ the ‘iCarly’ star tells MTV News about ‘Our Deal’ director Drew Barrymore. By Christina Garibaldi Miranda Cosgrove in Best Coast’s Supervideo for “Our Deal” Photo: Mexican Summer On Tuesday (August 2), California punk/pop rockers Best Coast premiered the video for “Our Deal,” a single off their debut album, Crazy for You. The Drew Barrymore-directed vid features a ton of up-and-coming-celeb cameos, from Donald Glover to Miranda Cosgrove. MTV News recently caught up with “iCarly” herself , and she told us the highlight of that very fun shoot was getting to work with Barrymore. “I had a great time,” Cosgrove said. “I’ve been watching Drew Barrymore movies ever since I was really little, so I was nervous to meet her.” Once on set, though, Cosgrove got over any nervousness about working with one of her biggest role models. “She’s really like your best friend,” Cosgrove said. The video, which was shot back in June, takes pages from classic forbidden-love movies like “West Side Story,” “Grease” and “Rebel Without a Cause.” Cosgrove’s co-stars, “Kick Ass” actress Chlo

Jay-Z And Kanye West Shuffle Watch the Throne Tour Dates

‘We pushed it back to really route it and put other dates on there,’ Jay says of pushing launch to October. By Rob Markman Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Fans eager to experience Watch the Throne live are going to have to wait an extra month before they can see Jay-Z and Kanye West in concert. On Tuesday morning, Live Nation started a pre-sale for the WTT Tour, but the original run, which was set to begin on September 22 in Detroit, is no longer. Instead Yeezy and Hov will now kick things off on October 29 in Atlanta, Georgia. The original 24-date tour is now slated for 17 stops, but Live Nation’s website says that more dates will be announced soon. The October 29 Atlanta date was in fact on the original schedule, as was the October 30, Greensboro, North Carolina, date and the November 1 show in Baltimore. The remaining concerts are all rescheduled. Look back at the events leading up to Watch the Throne ‘s August 8 release. There is still no New York City date on paper yet, though Hov confirmed that there will be one during a radio interview with Hot 97′s Angie Martinez on Monday, when he also denied rumors of a feud between him and Kanye . The Throne will stop at the nearby Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, for two nights and will also land in West’s hometown of Chicago on December 1. “That’s an old list we had to push that back, because it was like, we tried to put it out in pre-order and all the lines got jammed,” Jay told Martinez in the interview as she read off the tour’s original dates. “We pushed it back to really route it and put other dates on there. We’ll probably put four New York dates there instead.” Check out exclusive photos of Jay-Z and Kanye West in the studio. As of now, the last date on the schedule is across the northern border on December 18 in Vancouver. In the radio interview, Jay said that he and Kanye hadn’t worked out the performance details and couldn’t confirm who would hit the stage when or how the two would interact. “We hadn’t worked out those details yet but considerable time will be spent onstage together,” he said.
