The 50,000 bottles of water will be dispersed to schools throughout Flint on Monday. Mathis has also teamed up with AquaTru to provide nine water filtration systems to charter schools in the city. He believes that no parent should be put in a position to risk their child’s health due to the lack of accessibility to clean water. He added that if government officials aren’t going to rectify the situation, then individuals like himself will step up. “It’s difficult to win the confidence of the citizens that you have allowed to be harmed,” he said. “If you wouldn’t risk it for your children, don’t ask these parents to risk it for theirs.” This isn’t the first donation that Mathis has made. Last year, he sent thousands of cases of water to Flint residents. News about Mathis’ donation comes after 12-year-old activist Amariyanna Copeny —who is known Little Miss Flint—raised over $130,000 to create a long-term sustainable solution to the water crisis by bringing state-of-the-art water filters to underserved communities. The implementation of the water filters would give individuals the ability to have safe running water within their households. Earlier this year, rapper and actor Jaden Smith ’s eco-friendly natural spring water brand JUST Goods Inc. teamed up with Flint’s First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church to implement a system called “The Water Box” which reduces lead and other toxic chemicals in contaminated water. James, who has utilized his platform to speak out on several social and political issues and has been a fierce advocate for the improvement of education, believes that the success of the students is dependent on having a solid foundation at home. “Initially, our work was focused on helping these kids earn an education. But we’ve found that it is impossible to help them learn if they are struggling to survive — if they are hungry, if they have no heat in the freezing winter, if they live in fear for their safety,” he told the news outlet. “We want this place to be their home where they feel safe, supported, and loved, knowing we are right there with them every step of the way as they get back on their feet.” Graduate Hotel CEO Ben Weprin is excited to team up with James and his foundation for this impactful project. “It’s humbling to see the change they are affecting on a daily basis and we’re honored to be a part of the journey,” he said. Thoughts? Kamala Harris Is Trying To Push Legislation That Would Extend School Days To 6 PM To Help Out Working Families

Source: Tom Williams / Getty Kamala Harris Proposes Controversial Plan To Benefit Working Families According to Fox 8, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris introduced legislation earlier this week that she says would match school hours with work hours to help out working families. The “Family Friendly Schools Act” proposes stretching the school day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Harris released a statement on her proposed bill: “My mother raised my sister and me while working demanding, long hours…So, I know firsthand that, for many working parents, juggling between school schedules and work schedules is a common cause of stress and financial hardship. But, this does not have to be the case. My bill provides an innovative solution that will help reduce the burden of child care on working families. It is time we modernize the school schedule to better meet the needs of our students and their families.” According to the bill, after care programs and summer daycare programs cost the United States economy close to $55 billion. The bill would allegedly “provide grants to local educational agencies to establish ‘‘Family Friendly School’’ policies at 500 elementary schools that align the school day with the work day to better support working families and to disseminate the learnings from these model schools so that other local educational agency’s may adopt these practices, and to establish a supplemental 21st century community learning centers grant program to support programs and activities during summer recess when school is not in session. “

Under the guidance of his school’s chess coach Shawn Martinez , he learned how to play chess within a year and began participating in competitive matches. He went on to win the New York State Chess Championship title for the kindergarten through third-grade division. While in the spotlight for excelling at chess, a focus was put on Adewumi and his family’s living situation. His family fled from Africa to the U.S. to escape the Boko Haram extremist group two years ago and had been living in a homeless shelter. After their story received national attention, a GoFundMe page was created in an effort to help his family afford a permanent home. The Adewumi’s received over $200,000 from their fundraising campaign and moved into an apartment near Tani’s school. I want to release my blessing to others,” Adewumi’s father Kayode said in a statement . Felicity Huffman Refused to Talk to Lori Loughlin Before Prison

Earlier this week, actress Felicity Huffman reported to prison to begin serving a 14-day sentence. As you probably know, Huffman is one of the famous faces of the college admissions bribery scandal . And while she’s the first celebrity to get locked up for the bribes she doled out in order to ensure her daughter a place in the school of her choice, she almost certainly won’t be the last. After all, Huffman accepted a plea deal and prosecutors still made an example of her. (Sure it was the lightest slap on the wrist imaginable, but they imprisoned a rich, well-connected white woman in America, which is no easy feat.) Conversely, actress Lori Loughlin refused a plea deal and is planning to take her chances in court. And we think it’s safe to say she’s beginning to have second thoughts after seeing what became of Huffman. Insiders Loughlin still believes she’ll be able to avoid doing time, but is now contemplating the possibility for the first time. According to a new report from People magazine, Loughlin attempted to reach out to Huffman recently in order to get a read on how the actress was feeling about her upcoming sentence. Not surprisingly, it seems Huffman didn’t feel up to having a chat: “She wanted to encourage her, and see how she was doing,” a source close to the situation tells People. “She feels like their fates are tied together now, even though they weren’t really friends before.” Sounds like Huffman just wants this whole ordeal to be over with and has no interest in commiserating with her co-conspirators. But like it or not, it seems she’ll be getting another call from Aunt Becky shortly after her release: “She wants to debrief Felicity after jail to find out what it was like and what her advice would be,” says the insider. “She feels like Felicity’s time in jail will be an indicator on her own time, and she’s extremely curious to know how it goes.” Not surprisingly, Loughlin is hoping Huffman will reassure her that life on the inside isn’t all that bad: “She’s definitely hoping that Felicity’s time in prison will go easy for her, because that will be a positive sign that, if Lori has to serve time, that she’ll be able to weather it as well,” the source says. “Of course, it’s still very important for her to be exonerated of all charges against her,” the insider continues. “She still maintains her innocence and hopes it won’t come to that. But if she does end up serving time in prison, she wants to know what she’s getting into.” Lori might still be holding out hope that the judge will go easy on her, but that seems increasingly unlikely. While her trial date has not yet been set, it looks as though Loughlin will be going from Full House to the big house sometime in early 2020.

Michigan Girl Banned From Taking School Picture Because Of Her Red Bun

Continue reading here:

Source: Screenshot: WILX News 10 / WILX News 10 Another day, another disturbing example of a young Black girl in America being discriminated against because of her hair. According to WILX News , an 8-year-old from Michigan was banned from having her annual school picture taken because her braided bun was dyed red. See, according to officials from Paragon Charter Academy in Jackson, MI, claim Marian Scott went against the school’s policy of wearing only “natural hair tones.” Yet, Marian Scott’s father is speaking out, saying his daughter felt “singled out.” “It’s upsetting,” Doug Scott said, crying to WILX News about the treatment his child endured. He added “All of this is uncalled for, they didn’t even call us.” “Marian didn’t leave the house, go on the street and get this done on her own, no – she’s 8 years old, we did this ourselves in our own home and there’s no way I felt like this would happen.” While this may be the rule, Scott pointed out that the punishment for it isn’t clear. That, and while she wasn’t allowed to take the picture, she was allowed to return to class. “If they would have reached out to us and say come get her…she’s got a hair issue, we need you to change it, that’s not allowed – I would have been fine with why this happened but they didn’t reach out to us,” said Scott. “They let her stay in school… so if she’s not a disruption to the class, then why is she a disruption to the picture?” The school claims it sent an email about the policy, but Scott says he didn’t see it, and if he had he would have told his daughter’s mother to not add the color to her hair. But he is glad that people are now seeing what is going on at this school. In the meantime, the Scotts don’t plan on taking her out of the school and have rescheduled for Marianne to get picture re-taken on November 12th.   Regardless of this rule, it’s problematic that it exists in the first place and as we know, these types of grooming policies disproportionately affect Black girls and teens. But if this makes you upset, please know that there is something you can do about it now. Right now, in 48 states it is legal to discriminate against natural hairstyles at school and in the workplace. While the state of California passed The Crown Act earlier this year, it’s not a federal law across the board, but it can be if we speak out. That, and if we sign The CROWN Act petition urging the legislature to vote on it. Our hair shouldn’t be looked at a distraction, it has nothing to do with learning and punishing Black girls for how they choose to wear their hair has to stop. Now.
