Michigan Girl Banned From Taking School Picture Because Of Her Red Bun

Source: Screenshot: WILX News 10 / WILX News 10 Another day, another disturbing example of a young Black girl in America being discriminated against because of her hair. According to WILX News , an 8-year-old from Michigan was banned from having her annual school picture taken because her braided bun was dyed red. See, according to officials from Paragon Charter Academy in Jackson, MI, claim Marian Scott went against the school’s policy of wearing only “natural hair tones.” Yet, Marian Scott’s father is speaking out, saying his daughter felt “singled out.” “It’s upsetting,” Doug Scott said, crying to WILX News about the treatment his child endured. He added “All of this is uncalled for, they didn’t even call us.” “Marian didn’t leave the house, go on the street and get this done on her own, no – she’s 8 years old, we did this ourselves in our own home and there’s no way I felt like this would happen.” While this may be the rule, Scott pointed out that the punishment for it isn’t clear. That, and while she wasn’t allowed to take the picture, she was allowed to return to class. “If they would have reached out to us and say come get her…she’s got a hair issue, we need you to change it, that’s not allowed – I would have been fine with why this happened but they didn’t reach out to us,” said Scott. “They let her stay in school… so if she’s not a disruption to the class, then why is she a disruption to the picture?” The school claims it sent an email about the policy, but Scott says he didn’t see it, and if he had he would have told his daughter’s mother to not add the color to her hair. But he is glad that people are now seeing what is going on at this school. In the meantime, the Scotts don’t plan on taking her out of the school and have rescheduled for Marianne to get picture re-taken on November 12th.   Regardless of this rule, it’s problematic that it exists in the first place and as we know, these types of grooming policies disproportionately affect Black girls and teens. But if this makes you upset, please know that there is something you can do about it now. Right now, in 48 states it is legal to discriminate against natural hairstyles at school and in the workplace. While the state of California passed The Crown Act earlier this year, it’s not a federal law across the board, but it can be if we speak out. That, and if we sign The CROWN Act petition urging the legislature to vote on it. Our hair shouldn’t be looked at a distraction, it has nothing to do with learning and punishing Black girls for how they choose to wear their hair has to stop. Now. #BlackPressMatters: How The Solange X BlackPlanet Takeover Proves That When Celebs Collaborate With Black Media The Whole Family Wins

Read the original:

Source: Hannah Turner-Harts / Getty On February 26th 2019, Solange Knowles , one of the most prolific artists of our generation, leveraged her platform to breathe life back into one of the first homes for Black people on the web, BlackPlanet. By visiting blackplanet.com/solange , fans can explore the latest artistic venture from the Grammy award winning star from the comfort of a platform we all feel nostalgic for. Source: Max Hirschberger / Solange Over a year ago, I penned a piece on HelloBeautiful, How Black Hollywood Is Failing The Black Press , exploring how the difficulties of working as a Black journalist becomes exasperated by the prejudice we face on red carpets and the propensity for Black talent to trust white outlets with their stories and breaking news over us. The article went viral, sparking industry wide conversations about the importance of Black press in preserving our narratives. The moment made its way to the eyes and ears of some of Hollywood’s A-Listers, with BlackTreeTV journalist Jaleesa Lashay asking actor Sterling K Brown about the invisibility of Black journalists in the press room for the Sag Awards. Actor and comedian Lil Rel also tackled the issue head on, telling audiences at the MTV Movie Awards that he would always look to speak to Black journalists first on the red carpets he attends to bridge the discrimination gap. With numerous examples of Black stars coming forward to express their support and dedication for the Black Press over the past couple of months,  Solange’s partnership with BlackPlanet is a build up of a year’s worth of momentum. BlackPlanet was launched in 2001 when the Internet was still infantile and computers weren’t pocket sized or convenient. Within the realm of endless possibilities for content, creator Omar Wasow sought to carve out a unique space for Black voices and Black connections online. Keep in mind, Wasow’s stroke of genius precludes the mammoth social media era kicked off by MySpace (2003) and Facebook (2004.). As always, Black people were ahead of the trend, forecasting that one day we would all look to create little webpage extensions of our personalities and lives on the web. In the height of BlackPlanet’s reign, we all immediately became web designers before we even knew the career existed—creatively using copy and paste HTML code to customize our pages with our favorite songs, patterns and designs. Beyond our personalized content, BlackPlanet formed its own online community, chock-full of opportunities to share news and gossip, build friendships, and most importantly,  make love connections with a stranger. As social networking exploded into an Internet phenomenon, fickle audiences migrated to mainstream platforms, forgetting the sacred temple we had built for our memories and conversations in our own online tribe. This is why Solange’s desire to collaborate with BlackPlanet, the Black owned digital arm of the Urban One family, is such a pivotal industry shift. For once, mainstream outlets had to flock to a Black owned URL to find the latest project from a Black star. In a normal news cycle we are chasing the latest Twitter Trend, today, Black folks owned the conversation first. If this triumphant moment is a any indication to how Black celebs X Black press can work in tandem to drive the culture forward, the future looks bright and gorgeous AF. Bloop! Student Who Was Told Her Skin Was “Too Dark’ For Dance Team Sues Entire School District

Source: Stockbyte / Getty After Multiple Reported Instances Of Discrimination, She Had Enough One Black girl is coming for the entire Blue Valley School District after she was told her skin was “too dark” to perform during a school dance. According to The Kansas City Star , Camille Sturdivant graduated from Blue Valley Northwest High School in May 2018, and she was only one of two Black students on the 14-member Dazzlers dance team. According to a lawsuit filed by Sturdivant in U.S. District court, she suffered racial discrimination and was ostracized from dance team events out of retaliation for complaints she made in regards to her race. It was in 2017 that the dance team choreographer Kevin Murakami allegedly made remarks about Sturdivant’s skin being too dark. He said it would distract the audience from looking at the other dancers. “Murakami also told Sturdivant that her skin color clashed with the color of the costumes,” the suit said. Then in 2018, more pasty shenanigans allegedly went down when the dance team’s coach, Carley Fine, was fired for racial comments she made about Sturdivant, according to the lawsuit. Shortly before Sturdivant’s graduation, someone gave her the coach’s phone to play music for the dance team. According to the suit, Sturdivant saw messages between Fine and Murakami talking about how she recently won a spot on the Golden Girls dance team at the University of Missouri for the next year. The choreographer wrote, “THAT DOESN’T”T MAKE SENSE. I’m so mad.” The coach responded, “It actually makes my stomach hurt.” She then added, “Bc she’s (expletive) black. I hate that.” Sturdivant was sickened by the beige rage, and she showed the messages to her parents, according to the suit. They then showed the messages to the school principle. The coach was fired the next day, and she wasn’t allowed to be on school property or have contact with Sturdivant or any other members of the dance team. However, according to the suit, the former coach was seen at the school and with members of the dance squad multiple times afterwards. Sturdivant’s family also said that a team banquet paid for by the parents was canceled. However, they later learned that Fine and the other dancers, except Sturdivant, organized a dinner on the Plaza… On the same date as the canceled banquet. Smh. During the final dance performance of the school year, all of the team members, except Sturdivant and the other Black teammate, rocked ribbons on their costumes with the initials CL for Carley Fine, according to the suit. Sturdivant and the other Black student were also excluded from the team photos taken after the event, which was on school property. Now, Sturdivant’s lawsuit names the district, school principal Amy Pressly, Fine and Katie Porter, the parent of another dancer and a school district teacher, as the defendants. The Blue Valley district released the following statement regarding the lawsuit: “Respectful and meaningful relationships between staff and students are at the heart of Blue Valley’s culture. Discrimination of any kind has no place here. The District expects staff to treat all students with respect at all times, and any report that this expectation has not been fulfilled is taken very seriously. As stated in the Complaint, on May 1, 2018, Mrs. Sturdivant showed Dr. Pressly the text message between Mr. Murakami and Ms. Fine. Ms. Fine’s employment with the District was separated the following day on May 2, 2018.” Mhm. We’ll find out if that same energy works in court. The damages being sought by Sturdivant are unspecified.

Shady Business: A Former L’Oréal Exec Is Suing For Racial Discrimination & A Hostile Work Environment

JOHN MACDOUGALL/AFP/Getty Images A Former L’Oréal Executive Is Suing The Company For Discrimination And Other Issues A former marketing executive at L’Oréal is now trying to expose the alleged ugly side of the beauty brand in a new lawsuit. The employee, Amanda Johnson, is suing the cosmetics giant for discrimination along with claiming she endured a toxic work environment while employed with the company. Johnson claims that she was fired by phone after being promoted to assistant VP of digital marketing. She also says her boss Dan Bethelmy Rada would have “all-night benders and hotel parties . . . for which Rada expected Johnson to enlist ‘recruits,’ ” the suit explains, which was filed in New York federal court. Johnson is claiming that she witnessed a male executive watching porn during a business meeting, as well as sex-fueled parties at luxury European hotels during work trips, along with rampant racist hostility from management. The complaint also states that Johnson felt physically threatened by a fellow VP, Nicolas Krafft–she claims that she was fired after submitting an internal complaint to Rada. A L’Oréal spokesperson refuted the claims, calling them “baseless.” They told Page Six the following: “Amanda Johnson was fired for a pattern of unprofessional conduct that surfaced during her final months at the company, including what in our view was abusive and threatening behavior toward colleagues, serious lapses in judgment, and declining performance.” The rep added, “After she was let go, Ms. Johnson raised some alarming allegations about her manager and certain co-workers through a lawyer. We took her allegations seriously and investigated them all with great care, as they had not been reported to [HR] when she was with the company.” Johnson’s lawyers quickly fired back at this denial, saying, “L’Oréal’s public response to Ms. Johnson’s complaint shows that the company holds underrepresented minorities to a different standard in all respects. L’Oréal again has wrongfully tried to discredit and punish the victim, an African-American woman, by choosing to accept a false version of events as told by a few white employees on its payroll. L’Oréal’s so-called ‘investigation’ conducted ‘with great care’ did not even include asking Ms. Johnson for her side of the story.”
