Thoughts? Kamala Harris Is Trying To Push Legislation That Would Extend School Days To 6 PM To Help Out Working Families

Source: Tom Williams / Getty Kamala Harris Proposes Controversial Plan To Benefit Working Families According to Fox 8, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris introduced legislation earlier this week that she says would match school hours with work hours to help out working families. The “Family Friendly Schools Act” proposes stretching the school day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Harris released a statement on her proposed bill: “My mother raised my sister and me while working demanding, long hours…So, I know firsthand that, for many working parents, juggling between school schedules and work schedules is a common cause of stress and financial hardship. But, this does not have to be the case. My bill provides an innovative solution that will help reduce the burden of child care on working families. It is time we modernize the school schedule to better meet the needs of our students and their families.” According to the bill, after care programs and summer daycare programs cost the United States economy close to $55 billion. The bill would allegedly “provide grants to local educational agencies to establish ‘‘Family Friendly School’’ policies at 500 elementary schools that align the school day with the work day to better support working families and to disseminate the learnings from these model schools so that other local educational agency’s may adopt these practices, and to establish a supplemental 21st century community learning centers grant program to support programs and activities during summer recess when school is not in session. “

LeBron James  is seriously dedicated to helping his students, and he proves that time and time again. The baller is now adding safe housing to the school he founded in his hometown, so that students have a stable place to live while they get their education. The Ohio native announced on Monday that a historic apartment building in Akron is being renovated and turned into transitional housing for families in need at his ‘I Promise’ School. “Initially, our work was focused on helping these kids earn an education. But we’ve found that it is impossible to help them learn if they are struggling to survive — if they are hungry, if they have no heat in the freezing winter, if they live in fear for their safety,” James said in a statement. “We want this place to be their home where they feel safe, supported, and loved, knowing we are right there with them every step of the way as they get back on their feet.” James and his foundation opened the school for at-risk third and fourth graders in 2018 and plans to expand to first through eighth grade by the year 2022. LeBron has promised free tuition to the University of Akron when the students graduate. The foundation is currently working on the project with Graduate Hotels, which operates boutique hotels in college towns around the United States. Graduate is going to renovate the historic Westmont apartment building, located approximately five blocks from the school in Akron’s Highland Square neighborhood to donate the apartments to the school. “The I Promise Village by Graduate Hotels will be a monumental next step for us and LeBron and his Foundation’s commitment to the future of the students and their families,” said Graduate Hotels founder and CEO Ben Weprin in a statement. “It’s humbling to see the change they are affecting on a daily basis and we’re honored to be a part of the journey.” The building currently has 22 units and the foundation said renovations will start immediately, since it’s scheduled to be operational in July when the next school year begins. ‘Power’ Recap: Tasha’s Questionable Parenting Decision Might Actually Work

Read the original here:

Source: Starz / Starz Tasha made a controversial parenting decision at the end of tonight’s episode of Power. It’s questionable, but it actually makes sense. But let’s bring it back to how the episodes begins. We start with Ghost waking Tariq up by putting a gun in his face. Basically, Ghost figured out that Tariq helped Tommy murder Joe Proctor and is generally tired of his bull. Tariq was shook but pretended that he wasn’t scared even thought it was obvious that he was. When Ghost applied more pressure and even told Tariq that he would make it look like Tariq killed himself due to depression in the wake of Raina’s death. Tariq really got scared and flinched when Ghost pulled the trigger only to reveal that there were no bullets in the gun. Ghost just wanted Tariq to know that he will always be smarter than him and that he is no son of his.  The best line she ever had on this show. #PowerTV pic.twitter.com/LTN6wsMSqs — B E A N Z| New York Comic Con Flow (@PhotosByBeanz) October 7, 2019  Tommy also realized that Tariq ain’t ish. He found out that Tariq stole drugs from his stash and lied about it. Tommy was obviously pissed because that could have cost him his life since Jason don’t play that, and proceeds to hang Tariq off a balcony. Tariq as shook, as he should have been. He was also shocked that his uncle would do that to him. But, that’s the game, as Tommy stated before cutting Tariq off. The thing is, he sees more of Ghost in Tariq than he wanted to, and he doesn’t like that at all. You would think that this would be a lesson to Tariq but nope, he still wants to deal.  When your fathers aren't really speaking to each other but they're both sick of your sh*t #PowerTV pic.twitter.com/yBHDlN52nK — Kendra Ann (@KendraAnn4) October 7, 2019 And then there’s Keisha. Keisha’s ride or die schtick got taken up a notch. She caught her first body last night. It was self defense, but as we know, she ain’t really about this life and needs to quit. We know this, but Keisha doesn’t, and she’s most likely going to learn the hard way. So, what had happened was, 2-Bit and Spanky are tired of Keisha tying to boss them around and putting bad ideas in Tommy’s head. They see her as a liability so they sent a goon to her shop to try to scare her and hopefully get her to skip town. The rule was not to kill her or hurt her but the goon took it too far. Keisha was strapped and shot him to death. In other words, he caught her first body.  In related news, Ghost also paid Keisha a handsome amount of money to leave town with her son. Keisha did not do what she should have. Instead, she told Tommy that she couldn’t be in the game forever and that she wants them to get out and eventually be a family. Tommy told her what she wanted to hear and even bought her a nice house somewhere in the suburbs. We’ll see how long that lasts. Keisha obviously doesn’t really know her man.  Now, back to Tasha, she figured out that Tariq plotted his kidnapping with Vincent, she knows he basically helped Tommy kill Proctor  and generally realizes that her child ain’t ish. Someone on Twitter compared him to Joffrey. And that’s not actually far off.  At this point I don't know who I hate more #PowerStarz pic.twitter.com/kmXLpcuFpf — A Good Youth (@stephenj9585) October 1, 2019 Tasha explains to him that she knows he’s going to continue dealing drugs no matter what so she strikes her own deal. Her deal with him is that she will teach him the game but he has to stay in school and complete his education (they got him in a new private school) no matter what. If she can’t change him, she might as well make him the best. #PowerTV pic.twitter.com/UiedRLP9WT — Power (@Power_STARZ) October 7, 2019 In any other world this would be lunacy but it’s Power and this is what it is. It seems like Tasha is just being a realest and in this case Tariq is a lot like Ghost when he sets his mind to something. Tasha realizes that Tariq is never going to stop selling drugs and if he continues at the rate he’s going then he’s going to get killed, like he almost did with Vincent.   Finally, we did lose another soldier. So, let’s pour some out for Buddy. Buddy was in charge of watching Dre, whom Tommy, 2-Bit and Spanky had gotten ahold of, but Dre is a dang cat. They were going to kill him—had him tied up and everything—but tricksy Dre will not be held down so he did what he had to do again. #RIPBuddy, you didn’t deserve to get taken out, but that’s how this world works.  RELATED POSTS   Power Recap: There’s Only One Episode Left, But Did You Properly Grieve [Blank] First? ‘Power’ Recap: Saxe Is The TV Poster Child For Mediocre White  Men

Billionaire Robert F. Smith To Eliminate Student Loan Debt For Parents Of Morehouse Graduates

View original post here:

B lack billionaire Robert F. Smith has been dedicated to helping Morehouse College students overcome their financial obstacles. In May, he made a monumental announcement during the school’s commencement ceremony; sharing that he would eliminate the student loan debt for the entire 2019 graduating class. Smith is taking his philanthropic efforts a step further. According to Business Insider , he has vowed to pay off the student loan debt for the parents of those graduates. The billionaire who promised to pay off student loans for an entire graduating class just pledged to pay off their parents' educational loans, too https://t.co/hvZhXQ8tpy — Business Insider (@businessinsider) September 20, 2019 The gift is being donated to the Morehouse Student Success Program. Through the initiative, 400 Morehouse students and their parents and guardians will have their debt paid off in an effort to bring them closer to financial freedom and provide a solid foundation for building wealth. The donation that the Vista Equity Partners founder made in May was reported to be worth $34 million. “With the Student Success Program in place, there is a model for all colleges and universities, starting with Morehouse and HBCUs, to receive gifts from alumni and other supporters that can offset the burden of student loans and give students the freedom to pursue their dreams, the capital to invest in the economic growth of their families and the time that they can give back meaningfully to strengthening their communities,” Smith told the news outlet. President of Morehouse College David A. Thomas says that Smith’s gift will be transformative in the lives of Morehouse alumni and their families. “It is our hope that our graduates will use their newfound financial freedom to pursue their career goals, to lead and serve the community, and to remember the spirit of the gift given to them by paying it forward to support the education of future classes of Morehouse Men,” he said in a statement. As part of the program, Morehouse will conduct a research study exploring the impact that the elimination of debt has had on the trajectory of their lives. The initiative will also provide current students with financial literacy resources and scholarships. Programs like the Morehouse Student Success initiative are needed. Student loan debt has continued to rise within our country and has disproportionately impacted students who attend historically Black colleges and universities. According to the United Negro College Fund , one in four HBCU students borrows at least $40,000 to attend college. SEE ALSO: Billionaire Robert F. Blaine Elementary School to provide students with encouraging words and distribute 500 backpacks filled with supplies. He also gifted 30 teachers at the school with classroom supplies that will last the entire year. The initiative was a collaborative effort between Williams and Puma. This isn’t the first time that he has stepped up to support the youth during the back-to-school season. In the past, he’s hosted several school drives benefiting children in his hometown. Last year, he teamed up with the School District of Philadelphia to donate 6,000 backpacks to underprivileged students. “Growing up in Philly, I’ve watched families struggle to make ends meet and buy basic school supplies for the kids,” he told Billboard in a statement. “Those memories stay with me and that’s why I’m committed to giving back to families in my hometown, putting smiles on kids’ faces and helping them start the school year on the right now with the right supplies.” Williams’ donation comes at a time where many students and teachers at schools throughout the country need support as financial obstacles have prevented them from being able to purchase essential supplies for school. According to the  National Center for Children in Poverty , 15 million children throughout the country live in extreme poverty and are unable to afford school supplies. A  study  conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics revealed that 94 percent of public school teachers have spent some of their own money on school supplies without reimbursement. She told the newspaper that her mother Maggie Johnson picked out her name and declared it would take her daughter around the world. Meanwhile, her two sisters are named Kimberly and Robin. While the mother-of-four and grandmother-of-one admits that growing up she was constantly teased by peers and adults, she says that pain helped shape who she is today. “I’ve grown into my name because I am a strong woman. The name of her dissertation was called, “Black names in white classrooms: Teacher behaviors and student perceptions.” She told the Journal Sentinel that she spent part of her research interviewing Black students at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater about the effect their distinctly Black names had on their treatment by teachers and on their academic achievement. Let her tell it: The young people were eager to share their experiences with her. And she always lets those students know that while her teachers never pushed college on her because they assumed she wouldn’t amount to much, she persevered, and they can too. “Regardless of what they do, say or what they’re trying to put in place, you still have to move forward and succeed,” Dr. Pepsi stresses. Petty President: President Trump Tightens Cuba Travel Restrictions, Bans Cruise Ships

Source: ADALBERTO ROQUE / Getty In a move some expected once President Donald Trump took office, the administration is rolling back nearly 20 years of eased travel restrictions to Cuba and banning all cruise ship stops from the United States. The move was enacted to put pressure on Cuban officials and to keep American dollars away from its economy. NPR reports : “This administration has made a strategic decision to reverse the loosening of sanctions and other restrictions on the Cuban regime. These actions will help to keep U.S. dollars out of the hands of Cuban military, intelligence, and security services,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. Mnuchin, who joined Trump on his first state visit to the United Kingdom this week, added that Cuba, with a population of fewer than 12 million people, “continues to play a destabilizing role in the Western Hemisphere, providing a communist foothold in the region and propping up U.S. adversaries in places like Venezuela and Nicaragua.” U.S. law bars travel to Cuba for tourist activities, but Americans have been allowed to go there under 12 authorized categories, including individual and group “people-to-people” travel — a subcategory of the education provision that permitted visits to the socialist country for cultural and educational purposes. The travel restrictions go into effect on June 5. — Photo: Getty

Nicole Nafziger: 90 Day Fiance Star Reveals How She Tunes Out the Haters

90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? star Nicole Nafziger plans to return to Morocco and marry Azan. She refuses to let hateful, negative comments from “fans” keep her down any longer. In a new post, Nicole is sharing how she keeps a positive attitude in the face of unending adversity. Nicole Nafziger treated her fans and followers to a gorgeous selfie showing off her new, short hair and the natural beauty of her face. “‘Love and peace of mind do protect us,'” Nicole quotes in the caption of this photo. “‘They allow us to overcome the problems that life hands us,'” the quote continues. “‘To survive… to live now.'” “‘To have the courage to confront the each day,'” the quote concludes. Nicole then attributes the inspirational words to Bernie Siegel. (Side note: Nicole looks particularly breathtaking in this cobalt blouse and we cannot get enough of this pic) Though Nicole received the usual barrage of negativity under her positivity post, she also received praise from fans. “You look happy and at peace in this photo!” praises one fan. “That’s all that matters!”  “You look so pretty!!!” another follower affirmed. “Don’t listen to the haters on this post.” Among the haters were people telling her that she’s foolish for her continued romance with Azan. In another recent picture, Nicole showed off what a fun and loving mom she is with her adorable daughter, May. “Our lives have been so colorful,” Nicole gushed in the caption. “From the beginning,” she wrote. “There have been twist and turns and you’ve been the bright shinning sun that keeps me going.” “I know things are a little crazy now my dear,” Nicole acknowledged. “But soon it will be just right.” Fans will be reassured that Nicole is admitting that her life is chaotic at the moment. “I want to give you every opportunity in life and more,” she promised. “To see the world and learn the cultures.” Translation: she hopes that her upcoming trip to Morocco will be educational for her daughter. “Discover the world and know its beauty,” Nicole added. “Take chances and never regret a thing,” she recommended.” “I love you,” Nicole concluded. “And I want to give you everything” Fans saw Nicole’s crushing disappointment on Sunday night’s episode of 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? She and Azan had planned a romantic getaway to Grenada, which was apparently the only country that Azan was allowed to visit. That fell through due to some vague “family emergency.” This summer, Nicole plans to move to Morocco, with May in tow, transplanting herself there. After she marries Azan, a ceremony that they’ve continued to postpone, she hopes to acquire a spousal visa so that he can live in the US with her. Some fans have real concerns about May and her education. Where will she go to school? Nicole assures them that things are well in hand, though a little research done by fans reveals that American schools there cost $9000 a year. It’s unclear how the former barista with a fiance who doesn’t work plans to pay that kind of hefty tuition. Other followers think that Azan is just trying to scam Nicole. While some of these doubters are confused by and suspicious of Azan’s strange cancelations and excuses, others have blamed Nicole for being “gullible.” If people would be nicer to Nicole, and find kinder ways to express their concerns if they have to send them at all, she wouldn’t need to “focus on the positive” so dang much.
