Jesus Take The Wheel: Texas Substitute Teacher Arrested For Beating The Brakes Off Student [Video]

Tiffani Lankford, 32, faces a charge of second-degree felony aggravated assault after several videos showed her allegedly beating a female student. https://t.co/UIyuFn005X — FOX 8 New Orleans (@FOX8NOLA) November 10, 2019 Texas Substitute Teacher Arrested After Viral Fight Video A Texas substitute teacher has been fired and charged after she was caught on camera brutally beating a student. Tiffani Shadell Lankford, 32, is charged with second-degree felony aggravated assault after she punched and stomped on the head of a student during class. Cellphone footage shows the violent altercation between the teacher and the pupil that took place at Kyle, Texas’ Lehman High School.  ABC 13 reports that a student in the class said Lankford became agitated at the Spanish class and eventually closed in on the victim. There are other angles of the viral video showing the student hitting the teacher first. The local school district said Lankford passed a background check when they hired her in August, added that “there is absolutely no excuse or circumstance that can justify what you see unfold on the video.” The student’s family has obtained legal counsel so presumably, a lawsuit is forthcoming. “We are shocked and disgusted after seeing the abuse and excessive force used in this teacher’s attempt to discipline a special needs child,” said attorney Paul Batrice on behalf of the student’s family. “There is no excuse for this type of behavior. Given this teacher’s alleged criminal history of domestic violence and the video footage that has shaken our community, we have started an investigation into this teacher and Hays CISD in the hopes of ensuring justice for this family and so that no Texas student ever endures such extreme behavior again.” What. A. Mess.

High School Teacher Who Wore Blackface While Pretending To Be Common Placed On Leave

Read this article:

Source: ALEX EDELMAN / Getty These white folks just don’t learn. A California high school teacher who dressed up as Common for Halloween decided he needed to rock blackface to complete his costume. He was placed on administrative leave school officials revealed. A student who goes by the handle @karington_kk filmed the racist spectacle and shared it on her Twitter account on Friday (Nov.1). In the 23-second clip, the teacher can be seen pretending to Common mocking the rappers Microsoft AI commercial in front of the class. The caption for the Tweet read: “Sooooooooo… one of our WHITE teachers at mhs yesterday decided to paint his face so look like common the rapper yesterday,”  Sooooooooo… one of our WHITE teachers at mhs yesterday decided to paint his face so look like common the rapper yesterday. pic.twitter.com/1WudSddCLZ — karrington (@karrington_kk) November 1, 2019 The student who shared the video is not an actual student of the teacher in question Buzzfeed News reports. She received the clip from her friend, whose mother also works as a teacher in Milpitas Unified School District. As for her reasoning for sharing the troubling video, @karington_kk told the internet publication: “We decided to post this to bring this to the eye of the public,” the user said. “He genuinely thought it was okay to come to school like this.” In a statement to BuzzFeed News , school officials revealed Tuesday(Nov.5) he has been placed on leave. “The employee has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation,” said Scott Forstner, the communications specialist of Milpitas Unified School District in Milpitas, north of San Jose.” The teacher’s name has not been revealed due to the school instructing BuzzFeed News not to share it because the situation was “a confidential personnel matter.” The principal of the school, Francis Rojas and Superintendent Cheryl Jordan, sent out a memo to parents and faculty about the incident on Sunday. “Blackface paint has a historical and present-day connotation of racism that demeans those of African ancestry,” the memo reads, with a link to a History.com page about the  racist origins of blackface . “The act was disparaging to our students, parents, colleagues, and the Milpitas community we serve.” “We strive to embed our instruction with cultural and historical content so that our students see themselves in what they learn, and can be proud of who they are,” said Jordan and Rojas. “We are committed to building an inclusive learning community for our students together with you.” The costume would have been great without the blackface. Points Were Made: Teacher Suspended For Saying The Confederate Flag Is A Sign ‘That You Intend To Marry Your Sister’

Source: Boston Globe / Getty Teacher Suspended For Disparaging Comments About The Confederate Flag A secondary school teacher in  Georgia was suspended for referring to the confederate flag as a sign that an individual plans to marry their own sister. I meaaaaaan…..some points were made. The Richmond County School System ended up launching an investigation after said teacher put a photo of the confederate flag on their board with a message that stated: “A sticker you put on the back of your pickup truck to announce that you intend to marry your sister. Think of it like a white trash ‘Save the Date’ card.” One of their students at Hephzibah High School ended up being upset by the message, so she told her mother about the whole thing. The student’s mother, Melissa Fuller, voiced her anger about the matter in a post on Facebook, which is where it was widely circulated and prompted discussion from other parents at the school along with local residents. “A lot of [the discussion] is that it’s not morally correct. It’s unethical. It’s just something you don’t want to discuss today in today’s world and especially inside of a classroom,” the mother told   WRDW-TV . Fuller added that her daughter had been suspended after wearing a belt that features a Confederate flag buckle to school after being asked to remove the belt. “If she can’t wear that belt buckle, then why is it appropriate to make an assignment out of it?” she asked.  Now, the teacher in question has been placed on administrative leave, according to the   Augusta Chronicle . The school district told the outlet, “The Richmond County School System is committed to creating a diverse, equitable learning environment for all students. The language used in the example was unacceptable and has no place in our classrooms.” While some insist that the Confederate flag–first used during the American Civil War– simply serves as a major source for  Southern pride, it’s extremely offensive to many who argue that the symbol is synonymous with white supremacy, bigotry, slavery, racism, etc. Now, the flag is regularly used by neo-nazis throughout the United States.

Barbara Evans Trashes MTV, Wonders: How is Amber Portwood Still a Teen Mom?!?

Barbara Evans made $400,000 as a part-time cast member on Teen Mom last year. In a new interview with Radar Online, the polarizing mother of Jenelle Evans has plenty to say about both her own daughter and also Amber Portwood, but we felt it necessary open with this revealing tidbit. BARBARA EVANS MADE $400,000 FOR ONE SEASON OF TEEN MOM, YOU GUYS. This revelation aside (unless you still need a moment to digest it…), the crux of Barbara’s interview centered on two people and two facts: Her daughter, Jenelle, who was fired by MTV executives this spring after authorities temporarily took away her kids in the wake of David Eason murdering his family’s dog. Portwood, who remains a cast member on Teen Mom OG despite her July 5 arrest for domestic violence. In recently-released audio, we’ve learned over the past few days that Portwood seemingly beat and threatened boyfriend Andrew Glennon on numerous occasions, prompting Barbara to ask a pertinent question: How is she still a Teen Mom star?!? Moreover… how is Amber still a Teen Mom star while Jenelle is not?!? “Why should Jenelle and I lose our money, and why is MTV supporting Amber when Jenelle and I have done nothing wrong?” Barbara asks Radar . “We were on [the show] for 10 years too, and they stopped filming with us.” Adds Barbara, in total consternation: “Why is this fair? Why were we let go, and she wasn’t?” Barbara, of course, has been relevant on Teen Mom for years because she’s been serving as the guardian of Jenelle’s oldest child, Jace. She and Jenelle have had quite the contentious relationship, often arguing over both this custody arrangement  and Jenelle’s past drug use, among other ways and reasons why she’s largely considered an unfit mothre. Does Barbara have a point here? Yes and no. Jenelle absolutely should have been fired for both lying about Eason attacking her last fall and then for allowing her children to grow up in a home that also houses such a violent bigoy. No one can argue with a straight face that Jenelle deserves the platform and/or salary afforded to her by MTV. Now… should Portwood also be fired? In light of her arrest and the subsequent information that has come out about this long-time star? Probably, but one really has nothing to do with the other. It’s also worth noting that Portwood almost definitely WILL be fired anyway . This, despite the following hilarious defense of Amber by an anonymous Radar source: “Amber didn’t kill a dog. And she has not been convicted of a crime.” Techically, Jenelle didn’t kill a dog, either. But point taken. Still, in the aforementioned audio recording that leaked late last week, Amber allegedly exploded at Andrew… with their toddler in the room. Hiw crime? Waking her up for an appointment at 2 p.m. “If you don’t pick him up you f-cking fat piece of sh-t I’m going to f-cking stab you,” she says. “Get your fat ass up and get him.” Yeah. She should be fired.  View Slideshow: Farrah Abraham to MTV: Fire Amber Portwood NOW!

Cokie Roberts Dies; Legendary Journalist Was 75

Sad news out of the world of journalism today. Multiple outlets have now confirmed the death of iconic pundit and author Cokie Roberts. A family spokesperson says Roberts passed away due to complications from breast cancer. She was 75 years old. Roberts was an indispensable figure in the early days of National Public Radio, joining the upstart network as a political commentator in 1978. From there, she helped NPR grow into the institution that it is today, while simultaneously fostering a multimedia career that made her one of the most trusted names in TV news throughout the 1980s and ’90s. Having just one woman at the helm of a major media outlet was unusual in the 1970s. But Roberts helped to spearhead a female-led revolution at NPR. “[W]e called them the Founding Mothers of NPR, or sometimes we called them the Fallopian Club,” said NPR political correspondent Mara Liasson. “It is such a privilege — you have a front seat to history,” she said. Born into a politically-engaged family, Roberts was the daughter of two former U.S. representatives. Though Roberts was the only member of her immediate family not to run for Congress, her incisive reporting and unparalleled ability to translate complex, wonky issues for an audience of millions enabled her to make a unique contribution to the American political landscape. “You do get used to it, and you shouldn’t, because it is a very special thing to be able to be in the room … when all kinds of special things are happening,” Roberts once remarked in an interview. “I do feel strongly that informing the voters about what’s going on, trying to explain it in ways that people can understand and putting the issues out there is a form of participation.” Throughout her career, Roberts was applauded for her objectivity and her fairness in dealing with Democrats and Republicans alike “She liked people on both sides of the aisle and had friends on both sides of the aisle,” renowned journalist George Will told NPR. “If you don’t like the game of politics, I don’t see how you write about it well,” he added. “She liked the game of politics and she understood that it was a game.” These days the media landscape is both more crowded and more divided than ever before. But one common trait you’ll find among the denizens of that increasingly tumultuous world is a profound respect for the work and influence of Cokie Roberts. Saved By the Bell Revival: Confirmed by NBC!!!!!!!!!

ATTENTION, TELEVISION FANS: We don’t know if your teacher recently popped a test or if you’re currently a mess or if your dog ate all your homework last night. We do know, however, that it will be alright regardless… because NBC Universal just dropped some truly incredible news: We’re about to be Saved By the Bell once again! The company made this announcement on Tuesday morning, confirming that an updated version of this memorable sitcom will help anchor its new streaming service, which will somehow be called “Peacock.” The reboot will reportedly star Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley, who dated throughout most of the original seres as their respective characters, A.C. Slater and Jessie Spano. In a truly amazing official logline, NBC says that Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s iconic character, Zack Morris, has gone on to become the govenror  of California. This is what the synopsis says: When California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the highest performing schools in the state — including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over privileged Bayside kids a much needed and hilarious dose of reality. Does this mean Gosselaar could make an appearance? You never know — but he’s currently signed on to star as a lead on ABC’s new series Mixed-ish, having just come off Fox’s The Passage, which followed roles on the programs Nobodies and Pitch. Gosselaar has enjoyed a very strong career since Saved By the Bell went off the air. Conversely, Berkley made headlines way back in 1995 for starring as a stripper in the movie Showgirls. She’s done very little since. Lopez, who has hosted Extra and Access Hollywood, among other television shows, hasn’t acted in ages — but did recently stir up controversy for some homophobic remarks . As for other original cast members? Tiffani Thiessen has gone on to a strong career and is unlikely to want to reprise the role of Kelly Kapowski, while Dustin Diamond is now best known for having starred in a sex tape and for getting arrested a lot . And Lark Voorhies appears to have some mental problems . Saved by the Bell originally aired on NBC from 1989 to 1993. It cented on on a group of friends as they navigated life at Bayside High School and the cast included: Berkley (as Jessie Spano), Lopez (as A.C Slater), Gosselaar (as Zack Morris), Thiessen (as Kelly Kapowski), Voorhies (as Lisa Turtle), Diamond (as Screech) and Dennis Haskins (as principal Mr. Belding). An eventual movie was made of the sitcom, along with a very brief run of the Saturday morning series as a primetime show where Zack, Slater and company went to the same college. It didn’t exactly fare very well. And yet, in the wake of this revival news and in honor of Berkley’s Spano during her addiction to caffeine pills: We’re not even scared. We’re just SO excited!

Kenyan Government Slammed After Girl Commits Suicide For Alleged Period Shaming

More here:

Source: TongRo Images Inc / Getty The death of a 14-year-old girl who committed suicide has sparked outrage in Kenya. According to The Guardian , the girl took her own life after a teacher allegedly embarrassed her for having her period during class. The girl’s mom said her daughter died last Friday after she got her period in class and stained her clothes. The teacher allegedly called her “dirty” and sent her away from the classroom in Kabiangek. According to the girl’s mother, it was her first period and she didn’t have a sanitary pad. The girl’s death has sparked protests from women parliamentarians and reignited national talk about “period shaming” and access to menstrual products. A 2017 law requires the Kenyan government distribute free sanitary pads to all schoolgirls. However, poor execution of the law has been the subject of a parliamentary investigation. On Wednesday, female MPs took over the education ministry to protest the girl’s death and to discuss the program, said MP Esther Passaris on Twitter . More than 200 parents also made their outrage known outside the school in Kabiangek this week, according to local media. They condemned both the teacher and the alleged lack of action from authorities. Cops used tear gas to break up the protestors and they arrested at least five people. The school has been temporarily closed and a regional police chief, Alex Shikondi, said the girl’s death is being investigated. Access to menstrual products is a big issue across sub-Saharan Africa due to an inability to afford sanitary products. This causes girls to avoid school during their periods. A 2014 Unesco report estimates that one in 10 girls are absent from school during menstruation, which means they’re not present for 20% of their schooling year. Kenya was considered a leader to addressing this issue, especially when they passed their 2017 law requiring the government give out free pads to schoolgirls. However, some people question whether the $4.5 million set aside for the program has helped with access to sanitary products and increased school attendance. Passaris said on Wednesday that the program’s budget would have to be “at least 10 times” larger than it is now if all Kenyan schoolgirls were to get free sanitary towels. The education ministry and Teachers Service Commission of Kenya are carrying out their own investigation into the schoolgirl’s death, according to Passaris, and the report is scheduled for publication in the coming weeks. “We had a candid discussion about sanitary towels, the little girl who died, and the investigation that is ensuing,” she said. “We need to make it so that girls aren’t ashamed of their periods, and I don’t think we’ve won that battle yet.”

Philadelphia Unveils Its First Statue Of A Black Girl

R epresentation matters. Earlier this week Philadelphia children gathered in awe around the newest addition to West Passyunk’s Smith Playground; a statue inspired by the late legendary athlete Ora Washington . According to CBS Philly , the sculpture—dubbed “MVP”—was added to the park as a part of Philly’s 60th Anniversary of the Percent for Art Programs. The statue is inspired by Philadelphia athlete Ora Washington. https://t.co/tZI3jz542O — CBS Philly (@CBSPhilly) July 31, 2019 The statue—which was created by Brian McCutcheon —stands at 5 foot 4 inches tall and depicts a young girl playing basketball. Washington, a Philadelphia native, broke barriers on both the tennis and basketball courts. While playing basketball for the Germantown Hornets, she led them to a national women’s title in 1930 and helped them earn 33 consecutive wins the following year. She also played with the Philadelphia Tribune Girls between the years of 1932 and 1942. Her athletic abilities went beyond the basketball court. Often referred to as the “Queen of Tennis,” she won the American Tennis Association’s national singles title eight times and won 12 straight double championships; marking her place in history as a sports legend. Bringing the plan for the statue to fruition was a collaborative effort between the Percent for Art Program, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, Make the World Better Foundation, and Councilwoman Kenyatta Johnson . Leaders of the initiative hope that the sculpture will inspire youth—specifically young girls—to realize their dreams. “The children and teens that come to Smith Playground everyday can see and be inspired by this powerful sculpture that looks like someone in their community,” Kelly Lee , Philadelphia’s Chief Cultural Officer, told Patch in a statement. “My hope is, like the  Rocky  statue,  MVP  will become a local destination where people will come, replicate the pose, take photos, or selfies and if only for a moment feel like a MVP – a most valuable player.” Throughout the years Washington has received several posthumous accolades for her accomplishments in sports. In the 1980s she was inducted into Temple University’s Sports Hall of Fame. She also has been inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and the Basketball Hall of Fame. Black Woman Named Marijuana Pepsi Earns PhD After Completing Dissertation On ‘Black-Sounding’ Names

Continued here:

Source: Sandrine Bouvier / EyeEm / Getty A Wisconsin woman is proving to the world that having an eccentric name won’t stop her from her fulfilling her dreams and educational goals. See, her name is Marijuana Pepsi Vandyck and after eight years of studying, she just received her PhD  in Leadership for the Advancement of Learning and Service in Higher Education from Wisconsin’s Cardinal Stritch University. And be clear: Despite her name, she doesn’t smoke nor is she a huge fan of soda pop. Her name is Marijuana Pepsi, and she just got her doctorate https://t.co/RN4rY5dsXJ — Melissa Knowles (@Knowlesitall) June 19, 2019 The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Marijuana Pepsi, 46, stressed that while everyone told her to change her name, she refused to do so. She told the newspaper that her mother Maggie Johnson picked out her name and declared it would take her daughter around the world. Meanwhile, her two sisters are named Kimberly and Robin. While the mother-of-four and grandmother-of-one admits that growing up she was constantly teased by peers and adults, she says that pain helped shape who she is today. “I’ve grown into my name because I am a strong woman. I’ve had to be,” Marijuana Pepsi told the TODAY Show back in 2009. Even better? The name of her dissertation was called, “Black names in white classrooms: Teacher behaviors and student perceptions.” She told the Journal Sentinel that she spent part of her research interviewing Black students at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater about the effect their distinctly Black names had on their treatment by teachers and on their academic achievement. Let her tell it: The young people were eager to share their experiences with her. And she always lets those students know that while her teachers never pushed college on her because they assumed she wouldn’t amount to much, she persevered, and they can too. “Regardless of what they do, say or what they’re trying to put in place, you still have to move forward and succeed,” Dr. Pepsi stresses. Adding, “That’s my big thing. Don’t use that as an excuse. Use that as a steppingstone to keep on going. Leave those people behind and then you reach back. Each one reach one. Reach back and pull somebody else up.” In addition to teaching and  running a performance coaching company , Vandyck, who lives on a farm with her husband, started an annual scholarship award for Black students enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
