Orinda Shooting: Airbnb To Pay For 5 Funerals Of Victims Killed At Halloween Party After Families Raise Hell

Source: MediaNews Group/The Mercury News via Getty Images / Getty Airbnb To Pay For Orinda Shooting Victims Funerals Airbnb had to have their arm twisted into doing the right thing after the families of five victims killed at a Halloween party raised seven levels of hell. According to the San Francisco Chronicle , Airbnb , under intense pressure and a lot of bad PR, has finally decided to pay for the funerals of those murdered in the Orinda shooting. A statement released by Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky announced that the company has budgeted funds for not only the funerals but also counseling for the families. What happened on Thursday night in Orinda, CA was horrible. I feel for the families and neighbors impacted by this tragedy – we are working to support them. — Brian Chesky (@bchesky) November 2, 2019 Chesky’s above tweet prompted some card-pullin’ and receipt-wavin’ from lawyer Jesse Danoff who represents the family of Raymon Hill Jr. He said his law firm “wants the public to know that in no way has Airbnb done anything to support the family of Mr. Hill.” He said the family asked Airbnb to cover funeral expenses but got no response. “They haven’t even reached out to apologize,” Danoff said in the statement. “They have merely responded in public with platitudes and thoughts and prayers or have made nebulous promises to ‘do better’ and ‘improve trust.’” And. I. Oop. Shortly after Danoff let the yoppa speak, Chesky called and offered to pay. An offer Danoff calls “reactionary”. Despite the company’s offer, Danoff said his law firm, Mitchell, will sue Airbnb for negligence that caused “a grave and serious risk to life.” “We’re looking to have the family compensated for what was a senseless death of their family member,” Danoff said. Gonna take more than a half-dozen caskets and flowers to push past this one. Chesky better be ready to back the truck up.

Rest Easy, Pops: John Witherspoon’s Memorial Service Was A Star-Studded Affair

Excerpt from:

Source: JLN Photography/WENN.com / WENN John Witherspoon , best known by many as Pops from Ice Cube ‘s Friday franchise, passed at the age of 77 last week. In a star-studded celebration of life, the beloved actor and comedian was honored by family, friends, and peers on Tuesday (November 5). Entertainment Tonight reports that the service for Witherspoon was held in Los Angeles as was attended by the likes of Ice Cube, Chris Tucker, Cedric The Entertainer, and opened by his longtime friend and godfather to his son, former late-night host David Letterman. Ice Cube was among a long list of speakers who gathered to honor Witherspoon at the event. Regina King couldn’t make the event due to scheduling but left a video message for Witherspoon. Marlon Wayans was also unable to attend due to work conflicts but left a moving message on Instagram that illustrated the love shared between them. The Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder was also in attendance, fitting as Witherspoon voiced Granddad on the television series. “Laughter is the medicine for our mind, body and soul,” Ice Cube said. “It helps us get through this crazy world, and God bless the ones that make us laugh. John was naturally funny.” May John Witherspoon rest powerfully in peace. — Photo: WENN

High School Teacher Who Wore Blackface While Pretending To Be Common Placed On Leave

Read this article:

Source: ALEX EDELMAN / Getty These white folks just don’t learn. A California high school teacher who dressed up as Common for Halloween decided he needed to rock blackface to complete his costume. He was placed on administrative leave school officials revealed. A student who goes by the handle @karington_kk filmed the racist spectacle and shared it on her Twitter account on Friday (Nov.1). In the 23-second clip, the teacher can be seen pretending to Common mocking the rappers Microsoft AI commercial in front of the class. The caption for the Tweet read: “Sooooooooo… one of our WHITE teachers at mhs yesterday decided to paint his face so look like common the rapper yesterday,”  Sooooooooo… one of our WHITE teachers at mhs yesterday decided to paint his face so look like common the rapper yesterday. pic.twitter.com/1WudSddCLZ — karrington (@karrington_kk) November 1, 2019 The student who shared the video is not an actual student of the teacher in question Buzzfeed News reports. She received the clip from her friend, whose mother also works as a teacher in Milpitas Unified School District. As for her reasoning for sharing the troubling video, @karington_kk told the internet publication: “We decided to post this to bring this to the eye of the public,” the user said. “He genuinely thought it was okay to come to school like this.” In a statement to BuzzFeed News , school officials revealed Tuesday(Nov.5) he has been placed on leave. “The employee has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation,” said Scott Forstner, the communications specialist of Milpitas Unified School District in Milpitas, north of San Jose.” The teacher’s name has not been revealed due to the school instructing BuzzFeed News not to share it because the situation was “a confidential personnel matter.” The principal of the school, Francis Rojas and Superintendent Cheryl Jordan, sent out a memo to parents and faculty about the incident on Sunday. “Blackface paint has a historical and present-day connotation of racism that demeans those of African ancestry,” the memo reads, with a link to a History.com page about the  racist origins of blackface . “The act was disparaging to our students, parents, colleagues, and the Milpitas community we serve.” “We strive to embed our instruction with cultural and historical content so that our students see themselves in what they learn, and can be proud of who they are,” said Jordan and Rojas. “We are committed to building an inclusive learning community for our students together with you.” The costume would have been great without the blackface. California Leads The Charge By Signing A Bill Into Law Preventing The Sales And Production Of Fur

See the original post here:

Source: Estrop / Getty Governor Gavin Newsom made history by signing into law a bill that bans the production and sales of all new fur products in California. California is the first state in the nation to pass such a ban. Assembly Bill 44 went into effect on October 12 th . The bill applies to all new clothing, handbags, shoes, and any wearable item that is made with fur. Last year, San Francisco was the first major city to go fur free , so it’s no surprise to see California continuing to lead the charge. What does this mean? This means that consumers (and sellers) will receive a civil penalty if they are caught buying or selling these new products. Used fur, leather, shearling, cowhide and taxidermy are excluded from the bill. Furthermore, any fur products used by Native American tribes or for religious purposes are not included in the ban. Those that are caught breaking this new law will face a civil penalty. According to the Humane Society, the fur industry causes the suffering and death of more than 100 million animals worldwide and animals on fur factory farms are forced to live in cramped, wire bottom cages, deprived of the ability to engage in natural behaviors, before being killed by gassing or electrocution. Kitty Block, CEO and President of the Humane Society of United States remarked via press release, “The signing of AB 44 underscores the point that today’s consumers simply don’t want wild animals to suffer extreme pain and fear for sake of fashion.” Many high end brands including Versace, Michael Kors, and Gucci have vowed not to use real fur in their collections. This is not the only animal friendly law that Newsom signed into effect. Under another piece of legislation tigers and elephants won’t be allowed to be used in circuses. Another bill protects horses from being slaughtered while an additional piece of legislation now protects bobcats from being trapped and killed. Tracy Reiman, Executive Vice President of PETA praised the moment calling it “historic” for animals “including those who have been whipped into performing in circuses or skinned alive for their fur or skin.” She also added, “PETA is proud to have worked with compassionate legislators to push these lifesaving laws forward.” Block added via statement, “More cities and states are expected to follow California’s lead, and the few brands and retailers that still sell fur will no doubt take a closer look at innovative alternatives that don’t involve animal cruelty.” Beauties, would you want your state to sign into law a fur ban? Ice-T Joins Criticism Of ‘New Jack City’ Sequel Saying It’ll Be ‘Hard To Match Nino Brown’

More here:

Source: John W. Ferguson / Getty After wesley snipes expressed worries about the “new jack city” sequel in the works, Ice-T is now giving his thoughts. The actor and rapper spoke with HipHopDX on the topic, considering he starred in the 1991 movie along with Snipes. When asked about his opinion on the movie, Ice-T said he’s not involved in the project and explained: “I don’t know if they’re going to be able to pull it off for a couple of reasons. One is Wesley’s performance. It’s going to be hard to match Nino Brown. I mean, Wesley did a legendary performance to where people are actually calling themselves Nino Brown. He really did it, a fictional character. Two, I think that movie had a lot to do with timing.” He continued: “It was about the crack era  during  the crack era. All the music was current — from the New Jack Swing music and the stuff Teddy Riley was doing. It was based on an actual operation out of San Francisco Felix Mitchell had going, where people were getting high in a building and never leaving. So, that was real, The Carter was based on something that was real. So right now, you’re in an opioid epidemic, but I just don’t know how they could flip it.” Ice-T went on to say that he didn’t want another remake mishap like the recent remake of “Superfly”. “I mean, they tried to remake ‘Superfly’ and that sucked,” Ice-T said. “I mean, it was a valid attempt, but you can’t make a movie that’s just a big music video.” When asked if he’d be in the sequel to “New Jack City”, Ice-T said: “I definitely would want to read the script. I wouldn’t want to mess with it. Even though that was my first movie, that’s still one of my best movies that people talk about, so I wouldn’t want to destroy that legacy. I think they’d been better just doing another movie, not having it to do with ‘New Jack City’ ; just do a new movie. I don’t think you can remake ‘New Jack’. I don’t think you can remake ‘Scarface’. I don’t think you need to remake ‘ The Godfather’; certain movies like that, leave them alone, you know?” There you have it. Ice-T seems to join Snipes, who said: “I think some things should be left alone…if it worked at the time under the circumstances. And the story was built around things that are current. I don’t particularly like the idea of recreating the drug culture. For what? […] I don’t know. They actually talked to me about doing it and I told them no. If I had a dime for every time I’ve said no. It’s a done deal, it’s a wrap.” A release date has yet to be announced for the “New Jack City” sequel since it’s still in the works with actor and filmmaker Malcolm M. Mays writing the script. There is no director attached yet. Excellence: Steven Reed Makes History As Montgomery, Alabama’s First Black Mayor In 200 Year History

A LOT of positivity… Steven Reed Becomes Montgomery’s First Black Mayor A brotha just made history in Alabama in a major way! Steven Reed, a Probate Judge, is Montgomery, Alabama’s first Black Mayor. Reed is replacing current Mayor Todd Strange and won with 67 percent of the votes. He will be sworn into office on Nov. 12. “If there was any doubt about what we can do when we come together, when we unify this city, let the record show tonight, above all, show what we can do when we come together in this city and we build around positivity, around opportunity and all the things that tie us together,” said Reed about his victory according to WSFA. When asked why he thought his campaign resonated with voters, Reed said it was the vision for a united Montgomery. “I think our vision for a better Montgomery. Our vision for a united Montgomery, and our vision to create better opportunities for everyone and I believe our concise vision that was very consistent from the day one is something a lot of people listened to,” Reed said. “I believe people really were attracted to that. They really were interested in some of our ideas and that energy and that enthusiasm that we felt so many days in the community is going to churches, going to community centers, going to neighborhood programs, we felt the energy there and we felt that energy in some unlikely corners for some. So we knew the message was resonating, and we knew that somewhere along the line, we knew that we were making a difference and that we were connecting, and I think that’s why we had the results that we had tonight.” Reed’s win marks the first time in Montgomery’s 200 years that a black Mayor has been elected. It’s especially significant because Montgomery was once called the “cradle of the Confederacy.” Montgomery, Alabama, once known as the cradle of the Confederacy and later the birthplace of the civil rights movement, has elected Steven Reed as its first African American mayor in the city's 200-year history. https://t.co/PjcVnDIRzj pic.twitter.com/898HkTThcj — ABC News (@ABC) October 9, 2019 Congrats to Mayor Reed!
