As Jon Favreau’s flick hits theaters, we lasso up all the details about the much-anticipated flick. By Terri Schwartz Daniel Craig in “Cowboys and Aliens” Photo: Universal Pictures “Cowboys & Aliens” may be lassoing its way into theaters on Friday (July 29), but the movie’s journey to the big screen began a long time ago in a galaxy … well, not so far away. The current incarnation of Jon Favreau’s adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg’s 2006 graphic novel is a far cry from what the director had originally envisioned. When we first heard about the project back in ’08, it seemed to be shaping up to be “Iron Man 2.0,” with Favreau directing, “Iron Man” screenwriters penning the script and Robert Downey Jr. pegged as the flick’s leading man. “Cowboys & Aliens” was initially set to begin filming in 2009 , but with Downey Jr. unsure about committing to the role and Favreau still not officially onboard , things were still up in the air. Also by then, the “Cowboys & Aliens” script was in the capable hands of “Star Trek” writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman , who admitted that they had veered from the source material. In January 2010, Downey Jr. parted ways with “Cowboys & Aliens.” Fortunately, things started looking up only two days later, when it was announced that Daniel Craig was in talks to replace the “Iron Man” star as protagonist Zeke Johnson. In addition, the movie was set to start filming in July, potentially in 3-D . The casting announcements continued flowing in, including Olivia Wilde who came onboard as the movie’s leading lady. With the majority of the major players set to go, “Cowboys & Aliens” was given a July 2011 release date. In April 2010, rumors began to swirl that Harrison Ford would join “Cowboys & Aliens” . Favreau confirmed on Twitter that Han Solo himself would star opposite Craig and Wilde, making this one of the coolest casts around. The casting news just kept coming, with Noah Ringer , Sam Rockwell , Adam Beach , Paul Dano, Keith Carradine , Clancy Brown and Walton Goggins added as well. The buzz for the flick continued to grow right through to its 2010 Comic-Con presentation, where fanboys salivated at the news that Wilde had filmed a nude scene just days before the event. But it wasn’t until November that the rest of the world got a taste of what was in store. The first trailer arrived on November 17, and Favreau stopped by MTV’s offices to offer his own commentary on it. Then in February, another exciting new trailer aired during the Super Bowl . MTV News was lucky enough to get Favreau back for more trailer dissection . Plenty more “Cowboys” trailers followed, as well as clips . In mid-July, MTV News headed to Montana, where we chatted with the cast, including Craig and Wilde. Not long after that trip, Favreau stopped by our San Diego headquarters to talk about the movie’s big Comic-Con world premiere. It was the nerd event of the convention. 15 years ago, Will Smith,Vivica A. Foxx, Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum starred in an epic film that would change and set the standard for Blockbuster movies. Legendary filmmaker Roland Emmerich directed the 145 minute event that generated $104.3 million in it the first week of opening breaking the record once held by Jurassic Park. Will Smith’s character, Captain Steven Hiller saves the world after an alien attack that almost claimed the life of his girlfriend (Vivica Foxx), whom was lucky enough to escape with her life unlike most others who perished after the invaders unleashed their laser like weapons. Anyone who saw the Super Bowl in February also saw Cameron Diaz feed popcorn to Alex Rodriguez in a hilariously awkward, PDA-packed display. Promoting her flick Bad Teacher , the star gave us the inside scoop on the snacky sideshow to David Letterman on The Late Show Tuesday night. She then reenacted the incident with the cantankerous host … Cameron Diaz Talks A-Rod “We were sitting there watching the game, and I was eating, and I was getting down to, like, the last couple pieces of popcorn,” Diaz recalled. “All of a sudden, I see [Alex's] hand coming in. Anybody who knows me does not put a hand in my food, especially this close to my mouth.” But … “I said, ‘What are you … ?’ And then I went, ‘You know what? I love you too much, I’m going to give it to you. You deserve it.’” Aww/barf . As for their relationship, Diaz put an end to any A-Rod breakup rumors , calling him her boyfriend, in spite of his overzealous snacking and everything. Sounds like a keeper.
Christina Aguilera poses naked on the latest cover of W Magazine. This might make it difficult for any reader to focus on the interview inside, but that would be a shame. Because the singer touches on two of the obstacles that made the beginning of 2011 so challenging for her: Her split from Jordan Bratman. Her forgetting of the National Anthem lyrics prior to Super Bowl XLV. On why she and Bratman got divorced : “At one time or another, we were both not angels. It got to a point where my life at home was reminding me of my own childhood. I will not have my son grow up in a tension-filled home…” On the Super Bowl snafu : “Everything on the field at the Super Bowl was vividly bright, and I was having a moment. I got lost in the emotion of being there and I messed up the lyrics to the song.” Oh well. Christina has bounced back nicely, anchoring the panel on The Voice , this season’s top-rated new show.
We recap the mystery surrounding the project before you learn the mystery within. By Eric Ditzian Joel Courtney in “Super 8″ Photo: Paramount Almost exactly one year to the day that J.J. Abrams’ rebooted “Star Trek” hit theaters, rumors started to circulate in May 2010 that the director had already shot a theatrical trailer , to run in front of “Iron Man 2,” for a secret new project called “Super 8.” While the film seemed to have a connection to the Abrams-produced alien-disaster flick “Cloverfield,” we soon learned that wasn’t true . Instead, the film was an original tale, produced by Steven Spielberg and having something to do with an escaped creature from Area 51, the mysterious government site long suspected to be involved in alien experimentation. But that’s about all we’d find out for a while. Over time, though, we began to put together the pieces. And eventually, Abrams himself started to dole out info about the movie. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s flash back in time with an MTV News cheat sheet before we can truly say we know everything there is to know about “Super 8.” The Explosion The teaser trailer arrived, as rumored, in May. It featured a fiery train crash and the unseen presence of the mysterious creature. Sources connected to the film said the story would focus on a group of small-town kids in 1979 who begin filming a home movie on a Super 8 camera, only to capture the crash and the emergence of the creature. At this point, though, production on the flick hadn’t even begun. The shoot kicked off in September. By that point, Abrams had cast a collection of unknown young actors, plus Elle Fanning (“Somewhere”), to play his featured kids, as well as Kyle Chandler (“Friday Night Lights”) to portray the town sheriff and central boy’s father. That’s about all we knew. The next month, all “Cloverfield” director Matt Reeves would tell us was that the film “is very, very intimately connected to an aspect of [Abrams'] childhood and to this idea of Super 8 [films].” The Dust Settles By February of this year, as Abrams got set to debut a “Super 8″ Super Bowl ad and a full trailer , the director finally began to open up about the project, albeit reluctantly. “To me, all people need to know is that it’s an adventure about a small town and it’s funny, it’s sweet, it’s scary and there’s a mystery: What is this thing that has escaped? What are the ramifications of its presence? And what is the effect on people?” Abrams explained to the Los Angeles Times. “But I know that’s not enough. Look, I feel we need a little bit of a coming-out party because we are up against massive franchises and brands and most people don’t know what ‘Super 8′ means. We’re a complete anomaly in a summer of huge films … and we don’t want to be so silent or coy that people don’t care or don’t hear about it.” Then in April, we caught up with Abrams himself, as the helmer was putting the finishing touches on the film’s score. In a long-ranging conversation, he touched on the Spielbergian influences in “Super 8″ that so many observers had noticed. “He’s a real producer of this movie,” Abrams said. “He worked with me to develop the story. We had countless story meetings prior to and following the script. What was wonderful about working with him is the ongoing conversation. Because I was working with him, I felt free to allow the influences of his films to rise to the surface.” Seeing Clearly With “Super 8″ just days away from release, we debuted an exclusive clip at the MTV Movie Awards — one that began with a close look at the train crash and segued into a mini-trailer. Abrams, Spielberg and the kids were on hand at the show to introduce the footage. It wasn’t the first time we met them face to face. At a press event in May, the kids took us behind the scenes of that epic train crash and tried to explain what the film was all about without giving away the secret . And then on Wednesday evening in Los Angeles at the film’s red-carpet premiere, the cast had fun laughing off some of the wackiest theories they’ve heard about the mysterious creature at the heart of “Super 8.” “I’ve seen on IMDb that a lot of people thought it was a giant lion,” co-star Zach Mills said. “I don’t know why. That’s the craziest thing I’ve heard.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Super 8.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Remember that adorable Star Wars -themed VW Super Bowl commercial that went viral, about a tyke in a Darth Vader costume who’s duped into thinking his Force is strong by a dad with a remote-controlled keychain? (Ah, deceiving kids. Always fun.) Well, here comes Little Thor, whose frustrated attempts to similarly use Mjolnir on unsuspecting household appliances and a golden retriever culminate in a decidedly different ending.
