Months after the one-year anniversary of the creation of his I Promise School for at-risk children, James has now announced that he will be adding transitional housing for the families of students that are facing financial hardships, CNN reported. The company—which is known for the development of hand-crafted boutique hotels near colleges and universities throughout the country—will restore a residential building in the Highland Square community. The building—which is located minutes away from the I Promise School—is slated for completion by July 2020. James, who has utilized his platform to speak out on several social and political issues and has been a fierce advocate for the improvement of education, believes that the success of the students is dependent on having a solid foundation at home. “Initially, our work was focused on helping these kids earn an education. But we’ve found that it is impossible to help them learn if they are struggling to survive — if they are hungry, if they have no heat in the freezing winter, if they live in fear for their safety,” he told the news outlet. “We want this place to be their home where they feel safe, supported, and loved, knowing we are right there with them every step of the way as they get back on their feet.” Graduate Hotel CEO Ben Weprin is excited to team up with James and his foundation for this impactful project. “It’s humbling to see the change they are affecting on a daily basis and we’re honored to be a part of the journey,” he said. James has also been focused on fighting food insecurity. He joined forces with Walmart for a campaign to spread awareness about hunger in America and opened a pantry for underprivileged families at his I Promise School. T here is power that lies in the cultural influence of barbershops; especially within the Black community. These establishments have become far more than places where folks come to get their haircut; they’ve evolved into safe spaces where everything from political and social issues to health are discussed. A group of students from Hampton University is tapping into the impact of Black barbershops by utilizing them as an avenue to spread awareness about cancer prevention within the African American community, Southside Daily reported. Nursing professor pilots black men’s health screening program in a Hampton barbershop https://t.co/JASIj7V18s — Daily Press (@Daily_Press) October 18, 2019 The HBCU students teamed up with Hampton University nursing professor Jonathan Romero to launch an initiative called the “Barbershop Outreach Project” which was designed to address the disproportionate survival rates amongst men after they are diagnosed with cancer. Romero and the students—who are all pursuing nursing and pre-med degrees—teamed up with the Hampton-based barbershop BK’s Barbershop to provide health screenings for Black men. The project was created to cultivate a stronger relationship between Black men and the health system and to insert the importance of health screenings into barbershop conversations. “We set up right at the side of the building and we just asked ‘would you be interested in talking to us about your health?’” Romero told the news outlet. “Machismo or masculinity stubbornness will kill you in our community and has killed people in our community. People don’t seek out care so others won’t think they’re weak.” He hopes that Hampton University will be the leading force of change when it comes to Black health in the local community. As far as what’s on the horizon for the Barbershop Outreach Project, the organizers are planning to host more health-focused events at other barbershops. Black barbershops have become vessels for social change on many fronts. Through his program Barbershop Books , entrepreneur Alvin Irby is bringing literature to barbershops across the country to inspire young African American boys to read. B lack women are thriving in the realm of entrepreneurship despite the obstacles they face when it comes to securing capital for their business ventures. Research shows that although less than one percent of Black women entrepreneurs receive venture capital funding, they are the fastest-growing group of business owners in the country. Hair care entrepreneur Muhga Eltigani is one of the many female founders making power moves in business. According to Inc. , the NaturAll Club founder recently became one of about 50 Black women in the country to raise $1 million in funding. (@Inc) October 12, 2019 Eltigani founded NaturAll Club in 2015. The natural hair care subscription platform delivers fresh handmade hair products on a monthly basis. Some of the products include Fresh Avocado Deep Conditioner, Jamaican Black Castor Oil Growth Serum, and a handmade flaxseed gel. Last year Eltigani won $500,000 in a startup competition but decided to turn down the prize because it would have required her to move her Philadelphia-based company to Buffalo, New York. She wanted to wait for an opportunity that was in alignment with her brand. Her patience paid off and she received an investment from New Voices Fund CEO Richelieu Dennis . Dennis initially made a $1 million investment and after plans for Eltigani’s company grew, he decided to invest another $4 million. Dennis is dedicated to ensuring that women of color entrepreneurs have access to venture capital funding. “The facts about investments in women of color entrepreneurs, particularly black women, are astonishing,” Dennis told the news outlet. “Entrepreneurship among women of color has increased more than 320 percent, but less than 1 percent of those women receive access to the funding needed to sustain and grow their businesses. This is unacceptable.” Several individuals are stepping up to address the funding gap for Black women. Actress Keshia Knight Pulliam teamed up with entrepreneur Arian Simone to launch the Fearless Fund ; a $5 million venture capital fund to support startups created by women of color. B eauty entrepreneur Courtney Adeleye —the woman behind the brand The Mane Choice—has broken barriers in entrepreneurship and her 5-year-old daughter is following in her footsteps. According to Black Enterprise , Adeleye’s daughter Lily Adeleye recently became the youngest CEO to have her company’s products sold at Target. “Being the first Mother/Daughter duo to hit shelves in one of the largest retail stores in the world is still surreal to us. It’s history.” @CourtneyAdeleye https://t.co/2I57JcL8j3 — Black Enterprise (@blackenterprise) November 1, 2019 With the help of her mother, the youngster cultivated a brand dubbed Lily Frilly. The brand was created to empower young girls. Lily Frilly sells a variety of products including backpacks, dresses, lunchboxes and bows which can now be found at Target. “From the time Lily was 3, I knew then she had a business mindset. At an early age, as she watched me build a successful business from the ground up, it exposed her to many possibilities and goals, so with that, we didn’t wait until she was an adult to help her pursue them,” Adeleye told the news outlet. “Many people don’t understand the importance of instilling ‘the NOW’ into children. Not in all situations do you have to wait until you’re older to pursue your dreams. Lily Frilly believes that children have the ability to meet their full potential at an early age and we hope people see our story as an inspiration to be innovative and step outside of the box.” The mother-daughter-duo is also using the brand as an avenue to create spaces for mothers and their children to connect by hosting kid-friendly networking and empowerment events. Young Black entrepreneurs are landing major deals with national retailers. 12-year-old business owner Gabrielle Goodwin —who founded GaBBY Bows— landed a deal with Target to have her products sold at 74 of their stores across the country. Earlier this year, 18-year-old beauty entrepreneur Zandra Cunningham inked a deal with the retailer to sell her brand’s beauty box in their stores. A ccording to a report conducted by Nielsen, Black buying power is estimated to be $1.2 trillion and there are several entrepreneurs on a mission to ensure that those dollars are being circulated within the African American community. Danielle McGee created the website Black Business Boom as an avenue to connect consumers to Black-owned businesses throughout the country, the Chicago Defender reported. Entrepreneur Creates Coupon Program For Black-Owned Businesses to Compete With Groupon https://t.co/XDA1SxwymQ https://t.co/iG7BIKnGbP — Black America Cares (@BlackPeopleCare) October 11, 2019 Similar to the websites Groupon and Living Social, McGee’s platform features coupons for nearly 400 small Black-owned businesses. Both the website and app encompass a wide variety of products and services that span from beauty to auto. The platform also provides users with information about events and promotions from Black-owned businesses and features location-based advertising. Black Business Boom was developed to highlight businesses and build a solid foundation for customer loyalty. “I started Black Business Boom because Black-owned businesses typically have less access to funding, which consequently limits their ability to spend money on marketing,” McGee said in a statement. “Our platform is an affordable way for small business owners to generate revenue while attracting loyal customers.” She also stressed the importance of putting action behind social movements surrounding the support of Black-owned businesses by providing people with the resources needed to take actionable steps towards fulfilling the mission. There have been several digital platforms created to support Black-owned businesses. After truck driver Edward Dillard found it hard to locate African American-owned restaurants during his coast to coast shifts on the road—especially on the outskirts of major cities—he launched the platform Eat Black Owned . The website is a national directory of over 2,000 Black-owned eateries. Users can locate restaurants based on their geographical location. Joe Giudice has left on a jet plane. And, really, truly… he has no idea when he’ll be back again. If ever. As previously reported, the admitted criminal — who pleaded guilty in 2016 to multiple counts of financial fraud and recently completed his stint on prison — has finally been released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. But only under one condition: That he return to his native country of Italy. As loyal fans of The Real Housewives of New Jersey likely know by now, the veteran reality star was ordered out of the country by a judge in late 2018. Despite moving to the United States when he was a child, Joe never became an American citizen and then he committed a federal crime — so there you go. That’s how the system works; one must then be deported. Joe is waiting for his latest appeal of the ruling to be heard, and there’s still a chance the deportation decree gets overruled. But it’s a small chance — and Joe must reside in Italy while his case makes its way through the system. “He is en route to Italy right now. He spoke to [wife] Teresa and [daughter] Gia from the plane and he is extremely happy to be released, more than words can describe,” Joe’s attorney, James J. Leonard Jr., said in a statement on Friday. Shortly afterward, Teresa published a ridiculous photo on Instagram: Yes, this is a picture of the Statue of Liberty shielding her eyes… presumably because it’s SUCH a grave injustice that a mega-wealthy white person who confessed to breaking the law is being sent back to his first-world home country. Please, someone go break out a bunch of violins. Teresa captioned the picture with a string of the praying hands emoji. “We are still fighting and it is his desire to return home to the United States to be reunited with his family,” Leonard’s statement continued. Joe and Teresa are parents to four daughters (Gia, 18, Gabriella, 15, Milania, 14, and Audriana, 10) and it’s absolutely terrible that they won’t have their dad around for the foreseeable future. But he still sucks as a human being. Gia, meanwhile, shared a photo of herself FaceTiming with her father after his release on Friday, October 11. “One of the happiest moments of my life!” she captioned the Snapchat post on Saturday, October 12. “Love you so much daddy, so happy your [sic] free! See you so soon.” It’s pretty evident by this image that Joe has lost a lot of weight, which is not stunning for someone who spent several months behind bars. Take a look at the photo in question here: As for his future with Teresa? It’s a bleak one. By all accounts, Teresa will be ending her marriage regardless of what happens with Joe going forward. “I’m not doing a long distance relationship. I’m not doing it,” Teresa told Andy Cohen in March . “I want somebody with me every day.” “I know exactly what happens — I’m sure he’ll be with other women. It happens,” Teresa added at the time, looking ahead to a future of her in America and Joe abroad and concluding: “You do the long-distance thing, it’s not going to work. I’d be like, ‘Bye bye.’”
