Excellence: Steven Reed Makes History As Montgomery, Alabama’s First Black Mayor In 200 Year History

A LOT of positivity… Steven Reed Becomes Montgomery’s First Black Mayor A brotha just made history in Alabama in a major way! Steven Reed, a Probate Judge, is Montgomery, Alabama’s first Black Mayor. Reed is replacing current Mayor Todd Strange and won with 67 percent of the votes. He will be sworn into office on Nov. 12. “If there was any doubt about what we can do when we come together, when we unify this city, let the record show tonight, above all, show what we can do when we come together in this city and we build around positivity, around opportunity and all the things that tie us together,” said Reed about his victory according to WSFA. When asked why he thought his campaign resonated with voters, Reed said it was the vision for a united Montgomery. “I think our vision for a better Montgomery. Our vision for a united Montgomery, and our vision to create better opportunities for everyone and I believe our concise vision that was very consistent from the day one is something a lot of people listened to,” Reed said. “I believe people really were attracted to that. They really were interested in some of our ideas and that energy and that enthusiasm that we felt so many days in the community is going to churches, going to community centers, going to neighborhood programs, we felt the energy there and we felt that energy in some unlikely corners for some. So we knew the message was resonating, and we knew that somewhere along the line, we knew that we were making a difference and that we were connecting, and I think that’s why we had the results that we had tonight.” Reed’s win marks the first time in Montgomery’s 200 years that a black Mayor has been elected. It’s especially significant because Montgomery was once called the “cradle of the Confederacy.” Montgomery, Alabama, once known as the cradle of the Confederacy and later the birthplace of the civil rights movement, has elected Steven Reed as its first African American mayor in the city's 200-year history. https://t.co/PjcVnDIRzj pic.twitter.com/898HkTThcj — ABC News (@ABC) October 9, 2019 Congrats to Mayor Reed!

Alabama Man Who Received A Life Sentence For Stealing $50 Set To Be Released

Source: Andrew Unangst / Getty In Alabama , stealing 50 bucks could get you a lifetime in jail. Alvin Kennard was only 22 years old when he stole $50.75 from a Bessemer-area bakery. He was ultimately arrested and charged for the crime, which resulted in a life sentence without parole. All for $50. I want the opportunity to get it right.” According to reports from AL.com , the his insanely harsh sentence was triggered by the Habitual Felony Offender Act, aka the “three strikes law.” Kennard had previously been charged with burglary and grand larceny in connection to a gas station break-in, which means that his combined convictions made him eligible to receive a life sentence under the controversial act. I just witnessed the most extraordinary moment. She let the court know that he hadn’t received a behavior citation in 11 years or a prison disciplinary in 14 years. “When I first went to visit [Kennard], the guard was chatting with me,” Crowder to  ABC News , “and when he saw who I was visiting, he said, ‘That’s one that you could let him out and he wouldn’t cause any more trouble.’” She went on to reassure the judge that Kennard would do well in the outside world, as he has maintained relationships with his friends and family. Casanova Sued For Allegedly Assaulting Woman In NYC Diner

See the original post here:

Source: Prince Williams / Getty Brooklyn rapper Casanova is getting sued for assault. A woman claims the rapper and his entourage put hands on her in a New York City diner last year. According to the woman who filed the lawsuit, Casanova was the ringleader. Reports TMZ : The incident went down last August when Casanova and a group of friends sat down at the Good Stuff Diner. The alleged victim,  Niya Rucker , says his group included 2 women who were not Casanova’s wife … and she thinks that’s why he went off on her. According to the suit, Niya was shooting an Instagram Live video of her meal … but Casanova “mistakenly believed” she was recording him and the 2 women. She says the MC instructed one guy in his group to “take whatever action” was necessary to get Niya’s phone … “including physical force.” Niya says the henchman put her in a strangulation grip, grabbed her phone and deleted the video she’d already posted. She also posted a video of the aftermath, showing her mouth and chin bleeding profusely. In the lawsuit, she says she suffered a fractured jaw, damaged teeth, loss of consciousness, a split lip and several other cuts. Rucker is suing Casanova for assault and battery. No specifics on how much money she is seeking. Back in August 2018, shortly after the incident occurred , Casanova turned himself in and was booked for felony second-degree robbery. However, the case has not yet gone to trial. Casanova has denied putting hands on Rucker. Expect this to be settled out of court.

On a balmy July afternoon most members of the Alabama State University graduating class of 2019 are working diligently behind the desks of their entry level jobs and hard-won internships ; DaQuendrea Elston isn’t among them. The model and dancer is spending her post-grad summer day sitting on set chilling in her robe between looks. In an exclusive interview with HelloBeautiful before the next take , she explained how she went from shaking her hips in one of the most impressive marching bands in the world to walking the catwalk for some of fashion’s biggest names. She explained, “In elementary, high school, college it’s always been somebody trying to knock me down and say I can’t do something cause of my size and unintentionally I always end up proving them wrong,” she said. Pauley Perrette Slammed by Worried Fans After Latest Injuries

Pauley Perrette no longer stars on NCIS , so her days of allegedly being assaulted by Mark Harmon are presumably behind her. But when Pauley showed fans and followers an image of her hand injuries after a recent accident, she didn’t get much sympathy. In fact, she faced backlash over what fans see as a pattern of reckless choices. Pauley Perrette took to Twitter to show fans photos of her injured forearms. “So… I was standing on a stool trying to open my A/C vent,” her tweet begins. “And,” Pauley continues. “My hand got caught in the ceiling fan. Slashed my wrist and my hand is red and blue. Ugh.” And it got worse, as she later revealed in a subsequent tweet. “Is there a doc or nurse in the house?” Pauley asks. “My vein swelled up and turned black under the cut to the vein, do I need to go see a doc?” “Hey haters, yes I’m accident prone!” Pauley wrote on Twitter after a few fans expressed their amazement at her wounds. “But I install my own lights, I fix my own A/C, I do my own stuff,” she continued. “I’m a rough and tumble Alabama kid,” Pauley characterized. “Who hurts her redneck self sometimes.” “But not a spoiled brat,” she insisted. “I do stuff! On my own!” “And sometimes get my hand caught in a fan!” Pauley admitted. “I replaced my faucet and sink, fixed my A/C, installed 29 safety lights,” Pauley wrote in a follow-up tweet. She also “replaced my gate and locks, built my own storage, installed ramps for my wheelchair pals, and everything else.” “I’m NOT a spoiled celebrity,” Pauley insisted, as if that were the most important thing in the world. In contrast, she wrote that: “I’m a redneck that gets s–t done!” “And yeah,” Pauley acknowledged. “I get injured Worth it.” Fans were nothing short of perplexed that a 50-year-old woman who starred on a hit series for a decade and a half keeps doing this to herself. “If you’re (truly) accident prone, you might want to consider having someone else do stuff for you,” one fan gently suggested. A follower reminded her that “Accidents happen whether you are ‘prone.'” “We are not haters we just notice you seem to hurt your self a lot,” assured a compassionate reply. “But,” that fan added. “I’m proud of you for doing ya own repairs” Others rushed to the actress’ defense. “Don’t even give the haters the time of day….those of us that care know how handy you are and we love you for it,” one fan wrote. That follower continued: “The haters will hate no matter what so just ignore them. They are not with your time.” “Good for you doing as much as you can yourself. I am 68 and I do the same thing,” commented another. That 68-year-old added: “Sometimes I get nicks, cuts and bumps and bruises — That’s life. I am not one of the elite that can or would hire everything done.” The thing is that Pauley Perrette, well, is one of “the elite.” She didn’t star on 15 seasons of NCIS for charity. She had a hefty salary and has an estimated net worth of over $20 million. No one is judging her for being frugal. But damaging her meatsuit recklessly by insisting upon DIY solutions to home problems seems like an unnecessary risk. Critics of Pauley’s choices aren’t haters — they’re concerned fans.

These Abortion Bills Aren’t About Unborn Children, They’re About Power!

Read more:

Source: SETH HERALD / Getty As of Friday, Alabama, Georgia, and Missouri signed bills to enact the harshest laws on abortion. Alabama outlawed the procedure even in cases of incest and rape while Missouri banned abortion after the eighth week and Georgia at the sixth week. At this early in a pregnancy many women are unaware that they’re even pregnant. Louisiana is reportedly expected to sign the six-week abortion ban should the bill pass legislature. All of these bills are direct attempts to overturn Roe v. Wade – the 1973 high court ruling that provides women a fundamental “right to privacy” and has the liberty to choose whether abortion is an option for her or not. take a look. these are the idiots making decisions for WOMEN in America. Governor Kay Ivey…SHAME ON YOU!!!! pic.twitter.com/WuAjSVv6TH — Rihanna (@rihanna) May 16, 2019 While many Americans are up in debate over the death of a fetus, many are missing the true gruesome fate of this whole argument – old, out of touch, straight, white men don’t care at all about you or your pregnancy. What they do care about is power and they fear they are losing it. They’ve masked their true intent. These conservative extremists are twisting Christian words framed as “saving children’s lives” when their goal is to suppress women and minorities. Remember, these are the same type of men who called their cross burning intimidation tactics “cross lighting” ceremonies in which fire symbolized their faith in Christ. *side eye* And while I’m not necessarily pro-abortion, I’m definitely about the right to govern my own body, because once you allow men to take away your right to choose, what will they take away next? And if these men truly stand for saving children’s lives, where’s that same energy for unarmed Black children shot by trigger happy police officers? Where’s that same energy over loose gun laws that lead to senseless mass shootings? Where’s that same energy for the 437,500 children in foster care huh? As of 2016, the number of children in foster increased with the most dramatic increase seen in the great state of Georgia , which is also one of the top 10 states with the largest Black populations in America (along with Alabama and Louisiana). As the Associated Press cites, “[Georgia’s] foster-care population skyrocketed from about 7,600 in September 2013 to 13,266… The state is struggling to provide enough foster homes for these children and keep caseloads at a manageable level for child-protection workers.” But let’s go ahead and add a few more kids to the bunch! The frequent shuffles of children from household to household also inflict severe long-term behavioral and emotional problems contributing to mental health issues and poor academic achievement which can cycle them right back in to another government system like prison or poverty. Yet another means in which the government limits upward mobility for women and people of color. There’s also the blatant disregard for maternal quality of life. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. It’s been proven some medical professionals carry pre-conceived notions (backed by absolutely no evidence) that Black women have a higher pain tolerance and by doing so overlook the need for medical attention. “Basically, black women are undervalued. They are not monitored as carefully as white women are. When they do present with symptoms, they are often dismissed,” explained Dr. Ana Langer, director of the Women and Health Initiative at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston to Heart.org. So sis, why again should we let the government decide to force ill-prepared women to carry a baby, deliver it, and then endure the high risk of death associated with said birth for both the baby and mother to live an incredibly difficult life that seems more like a life sentence? If the mother chooses, she chooses out of love. When government officials consisting of straight, white men choose, its purely for selfish political gain. This doesn’t even take into account that these men also want to close down centers like Planned Parenthood which provide prevention education and contraceptives, not just abortions. Without proper places to perform the medical procedure, women and girls may turn to more dangerous methods of handling the situation, like self-abortion or suicide. These men are setting up our women and girls in a catch-22, a perpetual cycle of hardship while they profit from our poor quality of life. I will be attacked by fellow conservatives for saying this but so be it, this Alabama abortion ban is too restrictive. It doesn’t save life, it simply forces women into more dangerous methods, other states or countries. You don’t encourage life via blanket government mandate! — Tomi Lahren (@TomiLahren) May 16, 2019 So the next time conservative extremists tout their “live saving” rally talk, remember their true motives because it ain’t about the kids it’s about power. Hmm, I wonder what they’ll try to take away next…? If you have questions regarding prevention or upcoming appointments with Planned Parenthood, call 1-800-230-PLAN.
