When Rihanna Wins, We All Win: Why The Fenty LVMH Deal Doesn’t Have To Be All Black To Be Monumental

Source: Aurelien Meunier / Getty The impractical shoes, the resolute gait, the single mindedness, you can spot a Black fashion girl from a mile away. They march annually straight from the halls of FIT, LIM, and the school of life into an industry that is at its best indifferent and begrudgingly democratic and at its worst deeply racist and openly hostile. Black fashion girls grew up eyeing the fantasies erected in the hallowed pages of W , Elle , and Vogue . They learned terminology from The Hills , they searched for internships on Media Bistro , they scoured Women’s Wear Daily for an edge that would allow them to join the few non-melaninated people at the top rung of the traveling circus. As they envision the change they will enact when they finally claim their seats at those exclusive tables, Black fashion girls rarely consider how their power can be limited by not only their skin color but also their job title. Sadly, when Black women reach their coveted jobs at fashion companies, it’s as an intern on entry level employee. The few that make it higher than this, retention then becomes the issue as microaggressions infiltrate the day. Change is not created by mere presence alone. It happens when the voices in the room are empowered to speak up, and no one is more empowered than Rihanna. Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty Meticulous about her image from the very beginning (she notoriously sued a British retailer for using her image without her permission), her place at one of the world’s most powerful companies is one of unprecedented control. Rihanna converting her influence as a pop star turned style icon into tangible results has the potential to create a shift in culture that could upend the pervasion of offensive key chains and bubble coats. Her celebrity has taken her somewhere that apprenticeships and assistant gigs have not yet been able to go and she leaves the door so much as slightly cracked it will change many lives. Provocative ad campaigns and reactionary diversity councils aside, leadership in the fashion industry is still overwhelmingly white and male. The height of perceived luxury is governed by stakeholders who do not include island girls from Barbados with the balls to rock doobies on the red carpet, pilfer wine glasses, and flip off the paparazzi. Source: Jason LaVeris / Getty That is why what Rihanna has done with Fenty matters even if she has done it with the support of a major conglomerate. Using an inclusive strategy that rejects ageism and mommy shaming while embracing sex and body positivity she has already set standards in the beauty and lingerie spaces that are spurning growing investment into black models, executives, and designers. Rihanna is forcing companies to invest and expand in what they don’t have. Her partnership with LVMH for Fenty Beauty proved to be a success, utilizing new selling models and turning the industry on their head. Naturally, fashion is next. Rihanna will now force the industry to support what they haven’t for a long time: Black women (whether in size or color). For a (undisclosed) price, Rihanna is using her influence and changing how we know the fashion game. One can hope, in this moment, she’ll use her profits to invest in other  Black women or this moment to give Black women a seat at the table. Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty LVMH is a company that controls the trends you’ll be wearing all summer, the bottles you cling to at brunch, and the endless selfies you snapped at Liberty State Park this weekend. Their autocratic leadership being destabilized by Rihanna will have a ripple effect throughout the entire industry. It is easy to dismiss her accomplishments because she has done it by partnering with LVMH but to do so would be to ignore the potential of her impact. If her expressing her agency as a designer means clients, contracts, and steps forward for even one Black woman then it is a win for our community. And that should matter, to the gatekeepers, to the ambitious newcomers, to us all because it’s one small step for a multinational corporate giant but it’s a leap for Black fashion girls. 60-Year-Old Grandmother Named Cheyney University’s Valedictorian

Excerpt from:

A 60-year-old grandmother from Philadelphia is living proof that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. A few years ago, Rhonda E. Davis made it a priority to go back to school and get her college degree and she went above and beyond her goal by not only earning two degrees from Cheyney University but graduating as the institution’s Class of 2019 valedictorian, Philly.com reported. This 60-year-old Philly grandmother lived in the dorms at Cheyney. Now she’s the Class of 2019 valedictorian. | Inquirer https://t.co/k2T2BtqLVG — Philly Inquirer (@PhillyInquirer) May 10, 2019 The commencement ceremony was a culmination of a long journey for Davis. Pursuing her education was no easy feat. Davis’ mother had her at the age of 16. She was the oldest of six children and once she was a teenager she had to start working to help provide for her younger siblings. Her education was ultimately put on the back burner. Davis eventually started a family of her own and once her kids got older and her husband started working with SEPTA, she wanted to try something new and believed that education was the answer. After telling her husband that she planned on going to college to earn her degree, he decided to leave her. The lack of support didn’t stop the grandmother of 11 from going after what she wanted. She was awarded a scholarship through Cheyney University’s Keystone Honors Academy. Davis left her Southwest Philadelphia house and lived on campus where she became a source of inspiration for many of her fellow students. She would often tutor other students and give them advice about staying on the right track. At Cheyney, Davis displayed academic excellence. She earned a degree in graphic design and one in fine arts and finished with a 3.97 GPA. Her children and grandchildren were all in attendance at her commencement ceremony and her mother live-streamed the event from her Virginia Beach home. For Davis, the graduation was a full circle moment. She visited the HBCU in the 70s and loved the school. As for what’s on the horizon for Davis, she plans on growing her jewelry box business and creating children’s books. Her educational journey isn’t coming to an end anytime soon. Davis wants to pursue her master’s degree in fine arts. She hopes that her story inspires others to take charge of their lives. “Nothing changes, if nothing changes,” she said during her speech at the graduation ceremony. “You have to be the person who initiates that change.” SEE ALSO: West Point Makes Black History With Its 2019 Graduating Class Mother Surprised With Degree At Son’s College Graduation [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3852506″ overlay=”true”]

T.I. Awards Single Mother With $25K Scholarship

A tlanta-bred rapper T.I. tragically lost his sister Precious Harris in February, but he is turning his pain into something positive and ensuring that her legacy is kept alive through the creation of a scholarship fund. According to NBC News T.I.—whose real name is Clifford Harris —recently awarded a college student with $25,000 to put towards her education. Rapper T.I. is keeping the memory of his late sister alive by awarding an Arkansas college student and single mother a $25,000 scholarship. https://t.co/JVbR44KUQL — NBC News (@NBCNews) May 10, 2019 The Precious Chapman Scholarship is a collaborative effort between Harris, the United Negro College Fund, and VH1. Tierani Scott —a college junior who attends Philander Smith College in Arkansas—was awarded with the scholarship during VH1’s Dear Mama: A Love Letter to Mom special. Scott, who is a single mother, exudes excellence academically and in her personal life. She serves as the president of her class, has an outstanding grade point average, and leads a group called Queen Women’s Empowerment Organization all while balancing motherhood. She majors in sociology. Harris said that he wanted to select a recipient who embodied the same values as his late sister. “This year’s recipient is like my beloved sister,” he said. “It is our hope that this scholarship will help her continue on her path to do great things in her future.” Philanthropy is nothing new to Harris. He has continually utilized his platform as an avenue to give back. In April he teamed up with Scrapp Deleon and the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church to bail out non-violent offenders in time for Easter. Earlier this year he was honored by the Georgia Senate for his dedication to bettering the Atlanta community. “So many times, our answer to fixing things is “I’m gonna make some money and leave all these people behind.” There’s rarely an intent to get rich and make where you came from better for generations to come,” he said in an interview with Inc. “It’s extremely ambitious, but I’ve worked myself to a place where I should be the one leading the charge. In my mind, that’s what it means to be king.” SEE ALSO: T.I. Teams Up With Georgia Church To Bail Out Nonviolent Offenders For Easter Georgia Senate Honors T.I. Paola Mayfield Defends "Rights" of Anti-Vaxxers, Horrifies Fans

We all love Paola Mayfield. We stand by her when she’s mom-shamed by morons over her outfits or for taking breastfeeding pics. But the 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? star has made a statement that even her most devoted fans are struggling to defend. Pao is using her platform to champion the “rights” of anti-vaxxers to endanger their own children and countless others. Oh no. … Paola was asked what she thinks of anti-vaxxers and, taking to her Instagram Story, she shared her alarming opinion. “They have the right to choose what they want,” Paola asserts. “And,” she insists, they have a “right to do “what they feel is safe for their loved ones.” Astoundingly, Pao even thinks that these plague enthusiasts should be allowed to do so “without being judged!” That’s a hard no, Paola. Paola then does her best to convince her fans and followers that she is not speaking of herself, here. “I’m not anti-vax,” Paola claims. She has said this in the past, but the truth is … complicated, as we will explain. “But believe me,” Paola writes. “I will do my research before putting something in my little one!” On top of everything else, her use of the word research is drawing some unflattering responses. A couple of months ago, Paola was mom-shamed for vaccinating baby Axel . It was the correct thing to do and the responsible thing for her to do. Backlash from people prone to hysteria and vulnerable to misinformation campaigns was expected, unfortunately. But some of the ire wasn’t over Pao and Russ’ decision to vaccinate — not exactly. Some 90 Day Fiance fans were concerned because Paola noted that Russ had been reading a discredited book by a noted anti-vaxxer. At the time, Paola said that she and Russ would pick and choose which vaccines baby Axel would receive and when he would receive them. Spacing out vaccines against a doctor’s advice can endanger your child, especially in this era of outbreaks. And skipping some vaccinations without a medical justification? You know how you’re always supposed to take the entire round of antibiotics, even if you start feeling better? It’s like that. Unless there’s a pressing medical reason otherwise — like, one confirmed by your child’s actual doctor — you can’t just pick and choose. Medicine is not a buffet. Paola is a smart woman, and she’s been very careful about not giving specifics about her plans for Axel. But by expressing support for anti-vaxxers, she is making a clear statement: She values the feelings of anti-vaxxers more than the actual, real life safety of their children and of other children. You know how you don’t have to be a nazi to help the alt right — you just have to defend their right to advocate genocide? Well, anti-vaxxers are the same way. You can’t suppor their “right” to do harm in a vacuum. While we’re mentioning politics, we should note that there isn’t a clear political association with anti-vaxxers. They seem to be an alarming 10% of the population and are represented by only a few more percentage points on the conservative side. That’s a testament to Horseshoe Theory but also a glaring idictment of our education system. Real talk: children with cancer, compromised immune systems, or certain rare allergies cannot be vaccinated. Those kids need to be surrounded by people who cannot be carriers so that they will not die . Vaccinations are not a personal choice because they impact others. We love Pao, but she’s just wrong about this. View Slideshow: Paola Mayfield Mom-Shamed by Morons Over Breastfeeding Pic

A teenager was reaching for yet another greasy fry from a shared basket at the mall’s food court when she was spotted by the agent that would change her life. It’s a popular couture themed spin on the traditional Cinderella story and it’s oft repeated in cover stories and documentaries . But it’s rarer than it seems. And for models like Christina Mendez waiting to be discovered was never an option. In an exclusive interview with HelloBeautifu l the former Full-Figured Fashion Week Model Of The Year and mother of two explained how her path to the runway differed from the storybook version. I had a son and he was diagnosed with autism, so I was more engulfed with that situation than I was with fashion or even caring about how I looked,” explained Mendez. Though her son’s journey presented her family with significant difficulties his challenges also inspired her to live her dreams. Watching her child navigate through situations that were tougher than him than most kids filled with faith that anything was possible with the right amount of fortitude. Once her son was set into a regular routine Mendez sought out castings where she could start getting her face known around the industry. She had limited experiences before that she drew on. “I used to do fashion shows in high school like little high school things nothing major,” she revealed. Culturally we’re like ‘nothing is wrong with our kid’ ‘don’t talk to him’ it’s like we get really defensive and that really affects the outcome of our children. Even with mental health , we just try to sweep it under the rug and if we don’t talk about it, we can’t help our kids. So I feel super obligated to talk about it and fashion just gave me that platform.” She is also diligent about creating transparency around the images in the modeling industry. She uses her work with QVC to emphasize the importance of age and size diversity to her seven year old daughter. “I like to discuss you know, ‘This is an older model, This is a young model.’ No matter how different we look we are all models and beauty means something different to everyone.” But while the rise to creating change through her success was swift and strong there were definite roadblocks. Jenni Farley to Roger Mathews: Way to Ditch Our Kids So You Could Rage!

According to Jenni Farley, she cannot stop smiling over the presence of  Zack Carpinello in her life. The Jersey Shore veteran and her 24-year old lover seem quite content with each other at the moment. Conversely, Farley has made it clear once again that she REALLY is displeased with estranged husband Roger Mathews right about now. Following an Easter Sunday in which Farley and Mathews put their differences aside in order to spend time as a family with their two young kids, something appears to have gone awry. For a reason Jenni tried to make clear in a scathing Tweet yesterday, she now has yet another reason to think Mathews is a very bad parent and role model. In her Instagram Story message, posted late on Sunday, the MTV personality best known as JWoww said that her son and daughter wouldn’t be spending the weekend with their dad because he wanted to “rage.” She later deleted the note, but nothing ever dies on the Internet. “When you find out on Wednesday your kids will be with someone other than their father over the weekend because he wants to rage during HIS time because it’s been planned ‘for months,'” Farley wrote along with rolling eyes emojis. “Yeahhhh ok. Loving all your ‘dad posts,'” she added, mocking Mathews for how often he claims to be a dedicated and loving father and concluding: “Please keep over posting…really shows how ‘involved you are.'” It certainly is true that during the crux of their VERY ugly exchanges late last year and earlier this year, Mathews often claimed that Farley was ignoring their kids in order to film Jersey Shore. After his estranged wife obtained a restraining order against him several months ago, Mathews went on an all-time Instagram rant . He trashed Farley as a fake and phony sand vowed that the “truth” would come out and that all he cares about in life is being a responsible parent. It hasn’t really been made clear exactly what Mathews was referring to at the time, but a sad truth has seemingly come out about him since this argument: He admitted in an open letter to having been abusive with Farley, as documented below: View Slideshow: Roger Mathews Pens Letter to Jenni Farley, Admits to Abuse In this case, JWoww’s post apears to be in response to Roger’s Instagram video, posted Saturday, showing him on a “rare dad night out.” “Had this night planned for a few months now,” Mathews wrote along with the video, adding: “Kids are enjoying a sleepover with my best friends kids @fitmom_meg and Dads going to see @louiedevito tonight with some 20 year friends @jamiemalloy35 @dannycars13 @maximillian143 @aimeedanger @chrissyjules. “Rare dad night out. Leeeeeeets goo.” We can totally understand Farley’s frustration here. Her kids and two and three years old, seemingly pretty young to have a sleepover. It also seems a bit odd for Mathews to celebrate a “rare” night out, considering he doesn’t have primary custody of these children. Farley filed for divorce from the 43-year-old truck driver in September of 2018 after a three-year marriage, full of ups and down. The reality star has since moved on with Carpinello, whom Mathews seemingly approves of, having been asked for his opinion by Us Weekly a few days back. “He seems like a terrific guy and they seem to really be happy, and I’m very happy for them,” Mathews told this tabloid shortly after it revealed her new man is the 24-year-old professional wrestler from New York. Mathews added at the time that Carpinello is a “good friend of her little brother” and that they’ve been dating for “a few months.” We’re very glad to hear it. And we hope, for the sake of their kids, that Jenni and Roger can find an amicable co-parenting solution in the near future. John Singleton Dies; Beloved Director Was 51

Very sad news today out of Hollywood. John Singleton, the Academy Award-nominated director and veteran of the entertainment industry, has passed away 12 days after suffering a stroke. He was 51 years old. As previously reported,  Singleton checked himself into the hospital in mid-April after suffering leg pain following a trip to Costa Rica. He then suffered a stroke a short while later while under doctor’s supervision. He had been in a medically-induced coma ever since, with his family announcing on Monday afternoon that it had made the impossible decision to remove the director from life support. “It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today,” a statement from the Singleton family read. “This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors.” The statement went on to reference Singleton’s breakout film, for which he became the first African-American ever nominated at the Oscars for Best Director. John grew up in South Central L.A with a love of cinema that showed itself early on. He went on to become one of the most lauded graduates of the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Within months of graduating, John returned to South Central to shoot his debut feature, Boyz N the Hood. The movie, which was unusually shot in sequence, masterfully captured a story of friendship, youth and the peril of hard choices in a community marred by gang violence. Singleton also directed such movies as Poetic Justice, Four Brothers and 2 Fast 2 Furious. More recently, he had moved over to television and helped produce the FX drama Snowfall. But it was Boyz N the Hood that truly put Singleton on the Hollywood map. “The film earned special honors at its debut at Cannes and Singleton went onto become the youngest director and first African-American writer-director nominated for the Academy Award,” the statement continued. “Two decades later, the film was placed in the Library of Congress, a marker of its cultural and historical significance.” Continues this statement: “John was such a supernova in his youth that we forget that he was only beginning to fully assert his gifts as a director. Kurosawa was 52 when he directed High Low. Hitchcock was 56 when he directed To Catch a Thief. “As much as we will treasure his body of work, we were looking forward to the films John would have made in the years ahead.” Singleton’s loved ones went on to cite the star’s hypertension diagnosis, an affliction that affects 40% of African-Americans. They urged everyone to visit Heart.org in order to learn more about this disease and its symptoms. “John’s confidence in his place in Hollywood was only matched for his passion for the sea,” concludes the statement. “John kayaked in Marina Del Rey every morning. His greatest joy, when not on set, was sailing his boat, J’s Dream, up and down the Pacific Coast. “The American writer Willa Cather once said, ‘There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in the storm.’ “We who have grown up with John, made movies with him, sailed with John and laughed with John, know the universe of calm and creativity he created for so many. Now in the wake of his death, we must navigate the storm without him. “It is, for us, heartbreaking.” Singleton is survived by his mother, Shelia, and his seven children: Daughters Justice, Hadar, Cleopatra, Selenesol, Issis, and his sons Maasai and Seven. May he rest in eternal peace. UPDATE: The family has released this statement since taking Singleton off life support and watching him pass away. It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton passed away today due to complications from a stroke he suffered last Wednesday. John Singleton was a prolific, groundbreaking director who changed the game and opened doors in Hollywood, a world that was just a few miles away, yet worlds away, from the neighborhood in which he grew up. In his private life, John was a loving and supporting father, son, brother and friend who believed in higher education, black culture, old school music and the power of film. John’s confidence in his place in Hollywood was only matched for his passion for the sea. John kayaked in Marina Del Rey every morning. His greatest joy, when not on set, was sailing on his boat, J’s Dream, up and down the Pacific Coast. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2019: In Memoriam

Olivia Jade to Her Parents: You Ruined My Life!

Olivia Jade has gone from social media star to social media pariah. And she allegedly blames her famous parents for this downfall. Jade, of course, is the oldest daughter of actress Lori Loughlin and fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli. She has spent the last couple years amassing quite a social media following, with over 1.4 million Instagram followers and close to two million YouTube subscribers. It’s unclear exactly why anyone cared in the past just what Jade had to say — but it’s very clear now why they’ve turned on her. Jade and her sister reportedly had their college admissions bought and paid for by their mother and father, both of whom were indicted by the FBI last month on charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services fraud. According to official documents, Loughlin and Giannulli “agreed to pay bribes totaling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team — despite the fact that they did not participate in crew — thereby facilitating their admission to USC.” The scandal has received national attention and near universal scorn because it just epitomizes the advantages rich people have in this country. Rich people who break the rules, yes. But there are sadly so many of them out there, some of whom work in the White House. Jade, for her part, appears to have been in on the scam because she posed for photos in a pretend crew team outfit in as part of the deception. Her parents then used their money to bribe officials at USC, placing Jade on an athletic recruit list (despite her lack of an actual athletic background) that lowered her admission standards. Despite this apparent knowledge of what was going on, Jade supposedly is irate at her mom and dad for what has become of her reputation. “[Olivia] was passionate about her career, and now everything she built has imploded before her eyes,” an insider tells Us Weekly. “She feels they ruined everything.” Jade has scarcely said a word since these arrests were made. But she lost brand deals with TRESemmé and Sephora as a result of her parents’ alleged actions. And videos such as the one posted here haven’t exactly painted her in a positive light: Lori Loughlin to Daughter: HA! I Totally Paid for Your Education! “Olivia blames her mom and dad for this scandal and for the downfall of her career,” the aforementioned tabloid reports, adding that Jade sees herself as the “victim.” Interesting, right? Some folks might say that average high schoolers, who possessed a moral compass and did NOT possess the means of someone such as Loughlin and who were passed over for cheaters such as Jade, are the actual victims here. One woman who thinks this has sued Loughlin and her co-defendants for $500 billion . While Olivia is technically still enrolled in the University of Southern California, a separate source told Us Weekly she “has withdrawn physically” due to fear of bullying. Then again, it’s not like she really cared about being a student there. Per her very own words. “I don’t really care about school, as you guys all know,” Jade once said on video . “I don’t know how much of school I’m gonna attend,” she added. “But I’m gonna go in and talk to my deans and everyone, and hope that I can try and balance it all. But I do want the experience of like game days, partying.” This may have been the worst $500,000 anyone has ever spent on anything.

I n November 2018, Dr. Tamara O’Neal —an emergency room physician at Mercy Hospital in Chicago—was shot and killed by her ex-fiancé. Her former classmates are turning the tragedy into something positive. In an effort to keep O’Neal’s legacy alive, they have launched a scholarship in her honor, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Dr. Tamara O’Neal was tragically gunned down at her workplace, Mercy Hospital, in November. Now her classmates and closest friends have created a scholarship in her name, @mitchdudek reports. https://t.co/sI0SzztoT3 — Chicago Sun-Times (@Suntimes) March 17, 2019 The scholarship—dubbed the Tamara O’Neal MD Scholarship Fund—is designed for students who are a part of the University of Illinois’ Urban Health Program. The money raised for the fund will go towards supporting a student’s first year in medical school. They also hope to be able to fund the education of a fourth-year medical student who plans on completing their residency in emergency medicine. O’Neal graduated from the institution five years ago and became an emergency medicine resident graduate in 2017. Their mission is to give back to those who are following in O’Neal’s footsteps and are determined to make their mark in the medical field. So far there has been $68,000 raised for the scholarship fund. “Tamara was always a person who lived to help people, and to be able to pass that on in the form of this scholarship fund to help someone else, then Tamara still lives,” O’Neal’s father Tom O’Neal told the news outlet. “She used to call me up and tell me to say an extra prayer for her when she had a big exam … now I’ll say an extra prayer for the person who gets this scholarship.” This isn’t the first scholarship fund that has been created in memory of O’Neal. Shortly after her tragic death, her close friends launched a fund to support the next generation of Black doctors.
