Felicity Huffman Begins Community Service, Rolls Through Beverly Hills In a Porsche

When F. Scott Fitzgerald famously uttered, “The rich are different from you and me,” Ernest Hemingway quipped, “Yes, they have more money.” Our response would have been equally dismissive, but a bit more peevish — something along the lines of “yeah, no sh-t, Scotty. When they get convicted of federal crimes, they spend less than two weeks behind bars, and they roll up to their cushy community service assignments in six-figure sports cars.” Take a look at the strange case of Felicity Huffman, for example. Back in March,  Huffman pled guilty to paying an SAT proctor in order to help her daughter cheat on the exam, thus ensuring the girl a place in the college of her choice. There were rumors that the judge was planning to throw the book at the actress, but in the end, Huffman was sentenced to 14 days in prison . Those who considered the punishment ridiculously lenient were even more incensed when Felicity was released 3 days early, serving just 11 days behind bars. Last week, Huffman was released from jail, and she promptly got all emotional, because that’s what she’s been doing at every stage of this process. And now, the second stage of her sentence begins. In keeping with the “slap on the wrist/white privilege” motif that’s thus far characterized Huffman’s jaunt through our criminal justice system, the actress must pay a $30,000 fine and serve 50 hours of community service. Earlier this week, she was spotted leaving The Teen Project, an organization dedicated to helping at-risk youth. It’s fitting, in a way, as kids from disadvantaged backgrounds are the ones who are less likely to be admitted to college because rich people insist on buying a place in the student body for their already-insanely-privileged kids. Apparently to pour salt in the woods of those who feel this was a grave miscarriage of justice, Huffman was reportedly chauffeured from the facility in her husband’s Porsche.  So has she learned anything from any of this? Almost certainly not, but she talked a good game throughout the sentencing process: “I’m sorry to you, judge. I am deeply sorry to the students, parents and colleges impacted by my actions,” the Emmy-winner said in court. “I am sorry to my daughters and my husband. I have betrayed them all. “I think this is the right sentence here,” U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani told Huffman at the time of her sentencing. “You can move forward and rebuild your life after this. Without this sentence, I think the community around you would ask why you got away with this.” Yeah, because we’re sure a harsher sentence would’ve made it impossible for the rich, famous actress to rebuild her life. During her pre-sentencing testimony, Huffman recalled the emotional turmoil she’s suffered as a result of her actions. “My mind keeps returning to the 30-minute drive to the testing center. I kept thinking, ‘Turn around,'”  Huffman says the worst part of the whole ordeal was when her daughter asked why she didn’t believe in her ability to get into college on her own: “I had no answer,” Huffman said. “I can only say I’m so sorry, Sophia. I was frightened, I was stupid, and I was so wrong. I am deeply ashamed of what I have done. I have done more damage than I could ever imagine. I realize now with my mothering that love and truth go hand in hand. I take full responsibility for my actions.” When an awkward conversation with a teen was the worst part of committing a federal crime, you know the sentence wasn’t harsh enough.

Kourtney Kardashian Just Got Fired on Keeping Up with the Kardashians

Keeping Up with the Kardashians is about to bring the drama on Season 17. More than ever, it seems. E! has released an extended look at upcoming episodes of this long-running reality show, revealing various scenes and spoilers that have left viewers stunned and confused. Starting with this question: HAS TRISTAN THOMPSON PROPOSED TO KHLOE KARDASHIAN? According to Khloe, she has continually received lavish gifts from her awful ex-boyfriend and baby daddy. Specifically, the NBA star has given Kardashian a “pink diamond,” as teased in this intriguing video. “It looks fully like an engagement ring,” Scott Disick says while observing the piece of bling. “No! No,” the Revenge Body star yells in response. Now, to be clear, we never see Tristan giving Khloe any of these items… so it's very possible this is all just concocted nonsense. But it's also possible Tristan thinks he can win Khloe back . Elsewhere,  Kim and Kourtney Kardashian clash hard over a “Candyland”-themed party. We wish we were making that up, but it's true. After the Poosh.com founder calls her sister “the biggest f-cking evil person on the planet,” Kim replied by “firing” the oldest Kardashian, and claiming  that she means it. “We're firing Kourtney! She's out,” Mrs. Kanye West declares. Kim is referring just to the planning of this party, of course, but Kourtney later makes it clear that she'd be fine if the entire show simply ended right now. “I don't know why we can't all just respect each other,” Kourtney notes in a voice over at one point. And it seems that Kris Jenner agrees. She expressed some disappointment and even disdain in the preview, castigating her kids for their behavior. “I feel like the really funny side of you guys outweighed the mean side. And I feel like it's gotten a little Mean Girls,” Kris warns in this footage, adding: “As much as I love you, you fight a lot dirtier than you used to.” After all these years on the air, it seems like something is missing. Either that, or the scripts are just pretty terrible at this point in the program's very long run. “You guys gotta get back to the fact that we're just family,” Jenner concludes. Check out the revealing promo now!

Felicity Huffman Begins 14-Day Prison Sentence

From Desperate Housewife to Anxious Inmate! Last month, actress Felicity Huffman was sentenced to 14 days in prison for her involvement in the now-infamous college admissions bribery scandal. Today, the 56-year-old actress turned herself over to authorities to begin her two-week sting behind bars. In a way, the sentence is the sort of compromise that satisfies no one. Prosecutors initially pushed for a much harsher sentence of four months for Huffman. Her lawyers were able to whittle that recommendation down to one month, and in the end, the judge in her case dealt out a shockingly light slap-on-the-wrist sentence of just four months. The decision left Huffman in tears in the courtroom, but also led to widespread outrage among the many who (rightly) believe Huffman was a beneficiary of white privilege. In short, she’ll suffer the indignity of spending two weeks in a county-orange jumpsuit, but the consensus will remain that she got away with it and never paid her debt to society. Huffman’s sentence is a very short one — but in all likelihood, her reputation and career prospects are irreparably ruined. Huffman will serve her time in a detention center just outside of San Francisco — and her team is already spinning this into a case of her bravely facing her punishment. You know, the punishment she desperately tried to wriggle out of. “Ms. Huffman is prepared to serve the term of imprisonment Judge Talwani ordered as one part of the punishment she imposed for Ms. Huffman’s actions,” Huffman’s representative said in a prepared statement released today, “She will begin serving the remainder of the sentence Judge Talwani imposed — one year of supervised release, with conditions including 250 hours of community service — when she is released.” Huffman was convicted of paying a fraudulent proctor to help her daughter cheat on the SATs, thus ensuring admission to the college of her choice. Fifty other parents were ensnared in the FBI’s Operation Varsity Blues sting operation, but along with fellow actress Lori Loughlin, Felicity became one of the two faces of the college admissions bribery scandal. Unlike Huffman, Loughlin did not accept a plea deal, and is now gearing up to fight the charges against her in criminal court. She stands accused of doling out $500,000 in bribes in order to ensure her two daughters’ admission to USC. At this point, it seems highly unlikely that Loughlin will avoid prison time. “I don’t think I’d be giving away any state secrets by saying we would probably ask for a higher sentence for her than we did for Felicity Huffman,” U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling of the District of Massachusetts told NBC News today. We’ll have further updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.

Entrepreneur Creates ‘Raising Black Millionaires’ Flashcards To Teach Youth About Building Wealth

Original post:

R epresentation is everything. In an effort to teach children about the importance of entrepreneurship and building wealth, a Black-owned media company based in New Orleans created a flashcard game that highlights the journeys of Black millionaires and billionaires, the Chicago Defender reported. Each card includes the individual’s backstory and the awards and accomplishments that they’ve made throughout their careers. Entrepreneur Thiah Veona Muhammad , who created the cards, believed it was important for children to see examples of Black wealth outside of the entertainment and sports industries. “I think it’s imperative that we, as Black people, know who our millionaires and billionaires are, more specifically those who are in business and are non-entertainers/athletes,” Muhammad said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “Showing them real examples of people who look like them, making millions in various industries will not only help them to identify themselves as people of greatness, but it will introduce them to industries that they likely have never been exposed to before, giving them more career choices.” Amongst the business moguls featured in the deck are Janice Bryant Howroyd and Pamela J. Booker . She hopes that parents and educators will use the cards as a tool to educate and empower Black youth. This isn’t the first educational tool that Muhammad has created for African American parents and children. In 2015 she released a book titled How to Raise Your Black Child to Be a Millionaire: Child-rearing Secrets of the Black Elite and she also launched a blog that features lessons about financial literacy and wealth creation that can be implemented in the household and the classroom. The company also has a Raising Black Millionaires podcast where Muhammad leads candid conversations with African American millionaires on how their parents helped guide them towards success. Many Black entrepreneurs have created educational products to empower the youth. African American inventor Elliott Eddie created The Entrepreneur Game to teach children what goes into running a business. Doctor Opens First Black Woman-Owned Veterinary Clinic In Cleveland

Excerpt from:

B lack women are making historic moves in the realm of entrepreneurship. According to Atlanta Black Star , Dr. Venaya Jones recently opened the first veterinary clinic in Cleveland to be owned and operated by an African American woman. Meet Dr. Venaya Jones, owner of Cleveland's first black woman-owned veterinary clinic (via @ATLBlackStar ) https://t.co/WbW2Cr7dmY pic.twitter.com/RH9nJbNd6x — Veterinary Practice News (@VetPracticeNews) September 25, 2019 The clinic—which is based in the city’s Fairfax community—was created to provide accessible care for animals from different socioeconomic households. The facility offers a wide spectrum of services including diagnostic exams, dermatology, wellness visits, and hospice care. Dr. Jones—who discovered her passion for helping animals at a young age—says she wants to utilize the Cleveland Veterinary Clinic as an avenue to push animal health care forward and establish the clinic as a go-to veterinary facility in Cleveland. “I feel like it’s a great opportunity here in Cleveland, especially there being no other vet hospitals here,” she said in a statement. “There are tons of people with pets, we’re in the health tech corridor. I mean, this is where quality medicine is discovered and done, and I want to be a part of that.” For the Western University College of Veterinary Medicine graduate, opening up the Cleveland Veterinary Clinic was about more than her passion for animal health care; its about representation. Dr. Jones hopes her journey will inspire Black youth to pursue careers in veterinary medicine. She mentors youth and other women of color who are interested in stepping into the field. “I’m hoping to uplift the community both physically and emotionally, health wise by taking care of their pets, but … also bringing a sense of pride and a sense of accomplishment,” she said. “I want to be able to show other [young minorities] that they can do it, anything that they dream of, because here is a Black woman that’s come into this community and made it happen.” Black entrepreneurs are breaking barriers in the medical field. Earlier this year a group of African American medical professionals joined forces to open up Chicago’s only Black-owned urgent care facility . Angelica Ross Will Host Historic Presidential Forum On LGBTQ+ Issues Amid Black Trans Murder Crisis

See the original post:

Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN Angelica Ross , one of the stars of the FX series Pose,  will host a historic presidential forum on LGBTQ+ issues. According to Deadline , she will take on Joe Biden, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julián Castro, Tulsi Gabbard, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Joe Sestak, Elizabeth Warren and Marianne Williamson in the national 2020 Presidential Candidate Forum on LGBTQ Issues. The forum is presented by GLAAD, The Advocate, One Iowa, and The Gazette. It will be livestreamed from Coe College’s Sinclair Auditorium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Billy Gilman , the country artist and former contestant on The Voice , will perform the National Anthem for the event. The forum marks a historic moment, considering Ross will be the first transgender woman to host a presidential forum. This will also be the first presidential forum that will exclusively focus on LGBTQ+ issues, according to NewNowNext , especially at a moment when previous presidential debates have glossed over the subject. Ross will be joined by GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis on the stage and they will challenge the presidential candidates on pressing LGBTQ+ issues. During the forum, each candidate will have an opportunity to discuss their plan for improving queer and trans lives across America. The fact that Ross is hosting the event holds power, considering the current crisis of Black trans women being murdered at alarming rates . Just this week, The Advocate reported Ja’leyah-Jamar as the 19th trans woman to be killed this year. Eighteen of these murders have been Black trans women. Earlier this month, Bee Love Slater was another Black trans woman murdered. Her body was found burned beyond recognition, according to The Hill . Ross has consistently spoken up about trans rights and she is the founder and CEO of TransTech Social Enterprises , a trans-centered organization that helps empower folks in poverty with technical training that creates social impact and brings economic empowerment to marginalized communities. Although Ross didn’t explicitly say she would tackle trans murders at the presidential forum, she tweeted, “ I’m so READY & excited to be hosting the #LGBTQforum on Friday with @glaad, @OneIowa, @TheAdvocateMag and @gazettedotcom to ensure that presidential candidates are talking about issues important to LGBTQ voters! Stay tuned!” She also unapologetically called out presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Beto O’Rourke , who have yet to RSVP for the event. Felicity Huffman Sentenced to 14 Days In Prison For Role In College Admissions Scandal

When news of the college admissions bribery scandal first went public in March, two actresses quickly emerged as the most prominent figures ensnared in the FBI’s “Varsity Blues” sting operation. Now, one of them has been sentenced to prison for attempting to buy her daughter’s way into the school of her choice. Five months after Felicity Huffman pled guilty  to paying out $15,000 in bribes to rig the SATs in her child’s favor, the actress — best known for her role in the ABC drama Desperate Housewives — has been sentenced to 14 days behind bars. Huffman spoke in her own defense at her sentence hearing this afternoon, echoing her attorney’s claims that she did not realize anyone would be harmed by her actions. “I am deeply sorry to the students, parents, colleges and universities impacted by my actions.” she told the judge. “I have inflicted more damage (on her daughter) than I could’ve ever imagined,” Huffman continued. “I was frightened, I was stupid and I was so wrong. I am deeply ashamed of what I have done.” In addition to her jail time, the 56-year-old received a $30,000 fine, 250 hours of community, and one year of supervised release. Huffman was joined in court by her husband, actor William H. Macy. The couple bee-lined to waiting SUVs after leaving the courtroom and did not speak with members of the press. Huffman will start her prison sentence on a yet-to-be-determined date in the near future. While Huffman got off with a slap on the wrist (Prosecutors originally wanted her to serve four months in prison, but reduced their recommendation to one month following a favorable parole report.), her status as a convicted felon will follow her for the rest of her life. This means that she will never be able to own a firearm (probably not a matter of great concern to the actress), and will not be allowed to vote until she’s completed her probation. In the wake of the news about Huffman’s sentencing, many thoughts turned to her alleged co-conspirator Lori Loughlin. The Full House actress is the other famous face associated with the scandal, and she’s in a much tougher position than Huffman. Loughlin turned down the plea deal that Huffman accepted — this, despite facing far more severe charges. (While Huffman pled guilty to shelling out $15,000 in bribes, Loughlin stands accused of doling out $500,000 to help secure admission to USC for both of her daughters.) Strangely, Huffman’s sentence might translate to good news for Loughlin, as it’s considered a major defeat for prosecutors, who might now be inclined to offer the actress a second plea deal. Hopefully, this time, she’ll be smart enough to take it. We’ll have further updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.
