Project Beauty Expo Is the Conference Every Brown Beauty Needs

Follow this link:

Source: Project Beauty Expo / Courtesy of Brittany Brown Beauties, are you ready to take your beauty routine up a notch? Well, get excited because Project Beauty Expo is coming! Founded by esthetician, creator and owner of Moneé Cosmetics and fellow Brown beauty, Brittany Brown , Project Beauty Expo (PBE) is a one of a kind experience that every Black woman can enjoy. The annual “part conference, part experiential inspirational wonderland” is an opportunity for women of color to celebrate and connect with indie brand founders, network with content creators, hear from beauty enthusiasts and learn about everything there is to know about natural beauty, wellness and healthy living. “In the billion-dollar beauty industry, there is no platform that provides women with the tools to prepare themselves to enter this market while also giving them an opportunity to be discovered,” Brown explained. “With the platform provided by Project Beauty Expo, emerging or existing beauty brand owners have the opportunity to learn how to better operate their business as well as showcase their brand to the mass market.” As Brown stated, PBE was ultimately created in an effort to increase the number of multicultural women in the beauty industry by providing a support group for those interested in growing in this space. Source: Project Beauty Expo / Courtesy of Brittany Brown Not only is PBE a place where women of color can connect and build, it also aims to provide education from industry experts and buyers such as Sephora, Target, Ulta, Shopify and more that are dedicated to sharing insights on how to ultimately grow your indie beauty brand. What started as small event in Washington, D.C in 2016 has grown to over 40 participating brands and 300+ attendees, and only aims to get bigger. This year, the expo is taking over the West Coast (LA to be exact) starting on September 14 th and is set to be unlike any other beauty conference you’ve ever seen before. “[This] is a very exciting year for PBE,” Brown told us. “Not only have we migrated our community across the country but we’ve also expanded our event to 2 days. We added a full of workshops and to equip our exhibitors and other interested beauty professionals with the resources and information needed to grow their beauty business.” What sets PBE apart from your traditional beauty conference is that it’s a space specifically designed for Black and Brown beauty curators looking to take their careers to the next level. While larger beauty conferences might overlook this talented group of women, PBE was created for and by Black women and is designed to make sure people of color aren’t forgotten in the beauty world. Source: Project Beauty Expo / Courtesy of Brittany Brown In the short amount of time that PBE has been in existence, it’s grown to not only showcase indie beauty brands but also offer opportunities for Black and Brown women, beauty bloggers, natural beauty fanatics and enthusiasts to connect, collaborate, and share. The goal of #PBE2019, according to Brown is to “equip founders with knowledge through carefully curated workshops and create an experience for consumers and beauty entrepreneurs to come together to support the next generation of beauty disruptors that lack visibility within the industry.” Take it from the experts, this is one beauty event you don’t want to miss! Believe The Hype: Everything You Need To Know About Disney’s Magical Dreamers Academy

Source: Gregg Newton Disney Dreamers Academy 2019 Recap We had the pleasure of covering (and genuinely enjoying) the 2019 Disney Dreamers Academy (with excited partners Steve Harvey & ESSENCE Magazine) that brought together 100 extraordinary young people from across the nation for an immersive, transformational, all-expenses-paid experience at the most magical place on Earth: Walt Disney World. Yes, you read that right: ALL-EXPENSES-PAID Disney World experience where handpicked students (“Dreamers”) are treated like VIPs at all four parks (Magical Kingdom, Epcot Center, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom), fed like kings and queens (the food is AMAZING) and housed at the luxurious resort in sunny Orlando. Source: Todd Anderson But wait, of course there’s more: Dreamers are welcomed by Mickey himself before serving as honorary grand marshals in the iconic Magic Kingdom parade. And this is only Day 1 of 4. By the second day, they’re eased into the program that offers career-oriented workshops, mentoring by high-level professionals, networking and dress-for-success sessions, celebrity panels and much, MUCH more. Source: Gregg Newton This year, Chloe & Halle (“Grown-ish”), Trevor Jackson (“Superfly”), Marcus Scribner (“Black-ish”), Ruth E. Carter (Academy Award-winning costume designer for “Black Panther”), Miles Brown (“Black-ish”),  and JD McCrary (voice of young Simba in Disney’s “The Lion King” opening July 19) offered helpful millennial-to-millennial advice with a smile. Source: Harrison Cooney Past celeb guests include Soul icon Patti LaBelle and Ne-Yo, NBA legend and business mogul Magic Johnson, NFL star Cam Newton, Gospel star Yolanda Adams, TV personalities like celebrity chef Carla Hall and “Good Morning America’’ co-anchor Michael Strahan. There’s also a healthy dose of program co-founder Steve Harvey who pops in and out with hilarious Harvey-isms, timeless wisdom and priceless words of encouragement for the Dreamers (and their parents). Source: Todd Anderson Oh, and we can’t forget the many surprises along the way that included a Dumbo-themed dinner and special advance screening of the recently released film at Disney Springs. “These students are in for a life-changing experience,” said Tracey D. Powell, Walt Disney World Resort vice president and Disney Dreamers Academy executive champion. “Our goal is to help them see the unlimited possibilities and to inspire them to achieve their full purpose- to become the heroes of their own stories.” For the past 11 years, this amazing program has evolved into an important part of Disney’s commitment to inspiring the next generation at a critical time in their development. The theme is “Be100″ which encourages teens to be positive–“all in”–and to carry what they learn back with them so they can better pursue their dreams while making a difference in the lives of others. “Having a dream is one of the most important things in life. My success is a direct result of dreaming big,” said Harvey. “It is my passion to help others dream bigger and to give them the tools to achieve those dreams. That is why I enjoy partnering with Disney on this program every year.” Since 2008, Walt Disney World Resort has provided all-expenses-paid trips to over 1,100 Dreamers (plus a parent or guardian) who stood out from thousands of applicants. And, after four days, watching this class pour themselves into every aspect of the program, it’s clear why they were selected. Source: Gregg Newton *Applications are now open for the 2020 event next March at Walt Disney World. We strongly encourage high school students ages 13-19 to apply here . Alllll they have to do is answer a series of essay questions about their personal stories, the influential people in their lives and their dreams for the future. The final 100 participants are selected by a panel of judges. Alleged Audio Surfaces Of Joycelyn Savage Saying R. Kelly Told Her To Lie About Their Sexual Relationship

R . Kelly is facing 10 counts of sex abuse and heading to trial. Now, some damning audio has dropped of Joycelyn Savage saying that Kelly told her to lie about their relationship. See Also:  ‘I Thought It Was A Hoax’: Sparkle Talks R. Kelly’s Marriage To Aaliyah The Blast reportedly obtained audio of Joycelyn Savage talking to voice coach after her family found out she had a a sexual relationship with the singer. Savage does not appear to know she is being recorded. “I told him what was going on,” she said to her voice coach. “He can’t trust me … I have to gain his trust back because he really likes me a lot.” She also said that Kelly wanted her to send a text message saying, “I lied about me and you having sex.” Savage is also scared that R. Kelly may have gave her an STD, specifically herpes. The Blast also reports, “Joycelyn confided in her closest friends that Kelly allegedly sexually assaulted her during their first meeting, and her family firmly believes that incident started a pattern of physical and psychological abuse that resulted in total dedication to the star.” Kelly and Savage reportedly met in 2015 when he flew her out to a show in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The audio has reportedly been give to federal investigators. Gayle King interviewed Joycelyn Savage, 23, and  Azriel Clary , 21, during the now infamous interview.   Savage alleged that her and Clary’s parents were “out here to get money.” Clary cried,“I’m crying because you guys don’t know the truth. You guys are believing in some fucking facade that our parents are saying. This is all fucking lies for money. And if you can’t see that, you’re ignorant and you’re stupid.” Watch the full interview below: Kelly was arrested Feb. 23 after surrendering to Chicago police following his indictment on the same day for 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. After spending the weekend in jail because he arguably had trouble paying the $100,000 for bail, a woman friend of his posted his bond . Kelly was taken into custody again for failing to pay more than $160,000 in child support but was released a few days later after someone else paid his bond. The latest sex crime charges he is facing stem from attorney Michael Avenatti giving purported child porn videos that featured the singer. Avenatti said he was hired last April in connection to multiple allegations of Kelly sexually assaulting minors. He claimed to have videotaped evidence, which, despite their similarities, were apparently not the same video footage that got Kelly indicted in 2002 — and acquitted in 2008 — for child porn. Interest in seeing Kelly charged for his alleged crimes came at the beginning of the year when the bombshell docuseries “ Surviving R. Kelly ” aired with several women accusing him of sexually abusing them when they were underage. SEE ALSO: R. Kelly Arrested, His Lawyer Says: ‘All The Women Are Lying’ R. Father-Son Duo Launch Company To Increase Black Wealth

A Virginia-based father-son duo is on a mission to empower the Black community to generate wealth. Entrepreneurs Kevon L. Chisolm and his 11-year-old son Kamari launched an investment consulting company that promotes Black economic empowerment, Black News reported. Black WallStreeter Consultation Services, launched by a father & son duo from Virginia, is designed to help individuals increase their wealth… through the creation of investment clubs! #blackpreneur #blackceo #shopblack https://t.co/SRQcKJPLzx — Black News (@BlackNews) March 15, 2019 The company—dubbed Black WallStreeter Consultation Services—was created as an avenue to educate individuals about the importance of financial literacy and provide them with the tools and resources to reach their monetary goals. Aside from providing consulting services and informative workshops, the company will cultivate community by establishing investment clubs where people can pool money to make lucrative investments. Chisolm has extensive experience in the wealth management industry. He’s served at the helm of an investment firm called Umoja Investments for over a decade. Chisolm also penned a book titled Financial Legacy: Building Wealth Through Investment Clubs . He says that through the platform he and his son created he hopes to educate and empower the Black community to make smart decisions when it comes to money so that they can alleviate financial burdens. “When we created Black WallStreeter Consultation Services, we wanted to address a few main concerns individuals have about their financial wellness,” said Chisolm in a statement. “For example, many of our clients are unsure of how to pay for college tuition, save for retirement, buy a new home or start a new business. An investment club is the ultimate opportunity to increase personal financial goals and ease financial worries.” Chisolm and his son believe that it’s never too early to start learning about financial wellness and encourage kids as young as 8-years-old to attend the seminars so they can take solid financial values with them when they step into adulthood. The father and son aren’t the only ones spreading awareness about financial literacy within the Black community. Jameela Jamil Blasts Khloe Kardashian: Stop Fat-Shaming Women!

Jameela Jamil’s one-woman crusade against the weight loss industry continues. The The Good Place star’s latest target is a social media influencer who needs no introduction: Khloe Kardashian. Is Jameela’s criticism a rare miss, or is she right on the money? Khloe Kardashian took to Instagram on Thursday to share one of those goofy text posts that are designed to be relatable to people of every age. “2 things a girl wants,” the post begins with white text on a soft pink background. The text reads: “1) lose weight 2) eat.” Those two activities are often seen as contradictory. Losing weight is often a social pressure or personal desire, often to meet certain beauty standards. Eating, of course, is required for people to live. It is also intensely enjoyable. Those who eat less in order to lose weight or wish that they could bring themselves to do so could relate to Khloe’s post. On Twitter, Jameela Jamil was not amused by Khloe’s Instagram Story. “This makes me sad,” Jameela expressed. “I hope,” she wrote, that “my daughter grows up wanting more than this.” Jameela added: “I want more than this.” Alongside her tweet, she included a screenshot of Khloe’s post. Jameela made it clear that she does not harbor any ill will towards Khloe. “Sending love to this poor woman,” she emphasized. “This industry did this to her,” Jameela accused. “The media did it to her.” She wrote: “They fat shamed her into a prison of self critique.” “Dear girls,” Jameela concluded. “WANT MORE THAN THIS.” She finished her tweet with a large red heart emoji. Jameela Jamil has been taking aim at a number of celebrities on social media. In particular, she has excoriated those who promote weight-loss products. From “fit tea” to appetite suppressing lollipops, she sees social media influencers push these products upon young and impressionable followers. In real life, of course, these products often do little more than cause diarrhea. These are not the tools that wealthy influencers use to keep their bodies slender. For that, they have nutritionists, personal trainers, and sometimes even surgery. There is no “weight-loss secret.” it’s money. Just like with everything else. And Jameela doesn’t want to see young people damage their health because they think that they’re simply not trying hard enough. One might ask what Jameela, one of the most beautiful human beings on the planet, could possibly know about body image issues. The answer is: quite a lot. She has been open about her own experience with eating disorders, and revealed that even her reproductive organs were damaged by it. Even now, she says that makeup technicians have offered to hide stretch marks on her boobs. She is a model and actress, so she knows that she is in the spotlight. Fortunately, she can now handle it. Her concern is for countless impressionable young women (and men and those who are neither) who are so desperate to be thin that they’ll try anything. Jameela points out that widespread bullying is what pushed Khloe to transform her look. Khloe is fitness-obsessed these days. That was not always the case. In that accusation, we’d say that perhaps Jameela went a little too far. (I love Jameela, but she sounded a little patronizing — it’s not her or anyone’s place to speak for Khloe and her weight-loss motives) But given the scope of Khloe’s influence, being constructively critical of her post was extremely fair. FBI Confirms Gillum Is Not Corrupt And That DeSantis Lied

View original post here:

T he cloud of corruption finally lifted from Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum with the release on Wednesday of an FBI report on its probe of city officials. It confirmed Gillum’s denial of wrongdoing and showed that his Republican rival for Florida governor Ron DeSantis exploited the investigation to win the election. See Also: Andrew Gillum Lost Florida Election Because Of Racism, Democrats Say Gillum’s name was not listed among those indicted by federal authorities in an investigation into whether businessmen were able to influence Tallahassee development projects, Politico reported. DeSantis led a racist campaign that poured millions of dollars into painting Gillum, who was running to become the state’s first African-American governor, as corrupt—even though Gillum had always said he was not a target of the probe. Republicans spent at least $7 million on TV ads to connect Gillum to the investigation. It paid off, with DeSantis winning a narrow victory. “If the FBI had something on Gillum, they would have brought it by now or it would be in this indictment. They got nothing on Gillum. He got screwed,” said Steven R. Andrews , a Republican strategist who is also a criminal defense attorney representing one of the defendants in the case. NewsOne talked with @AndrewGillum about his campaign, as he races toward the finish line in the #FloridaPrimary for governor…. https://t.co/e2D9Xg3KE8 @peoplefor pic.twitter.com/aKGq5PwpWf — NewsOne (@newsone) August 28, 2018 Gillum’s connection to the investigation was reportedly centered on his relationship with local businessman and lobbyist Adam Corey , a college friend who was previously Gillum’s campaign treasurer. Corey had reportedly set up meetings between undercover FBI agents, posing as land developers, and Tallahassee officials—including Gillum. The FBI investigation was just one of the tools in DeSantis’ arsenal that included racist attacks. DeSantis has a long history of associating with white nationalists. Less than 24 hours after winning the GOP nomination in August, DeSantis blew a racist dog whistle when he warned Florida voters not to “monkey this up” by voting for Gillum. Soon after, white supremacists answered the whistle by sending out racist robocalls. Another series of robocalls attacking Gillum went out during their first debate. Gillum decidedly out-dueled DeSantis in the first debate through his mastery of the issues. But the Trump-backed candidate often used allegations of corruption to score points against Gillum. Now that the FBI investigation is in the rearview mirror, Gillum can focus on his political future. There were reports that he met recently with former President Barack Obama . Disrupt Harlem Code Squad Empowers Youth Through Tech Education

Read more:

D iversity numbers in the tech industry remain stagnant. Despite African-Americans being one of the top demographic groups for digital consumption, when it comes to forging career paths in the tech industry there isn’t a level playing field. According to a study released by the National Urban League , at major social media and tech companies, less than five percent of employees are Black. Disrupt Harlem Code Squad —a free Harlem-based tech and entrepreneurship program—is aiming to change the status quo by empowering opportunity youth through STEM education. The program—which is an initiative led by the Harlem Business Alliance —was created as an avenue to connect young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 to the New York City tech industry. Over the course of 15-weeks, program participants are provided with one-on-one training, courses on how to code, field trips to the headquarters of tech giants in the New York City area, and ongoing mentorship. Disrupt Harlem Code Squad also puts the emphasis on entrepreneurship; empowering students to design their own mobile and web apps. After completing the program, some of the participants are aligned with internships in the tech industry and others continue to expand their skills at a full-stack developer coding program led by The Knowledge House. As New York City’s tech landscape continues to expand and there are talks about it transforming into the next Silicon Valley, its imperative for opportunity youth from inner-city communities to be able to compete in this industry. Furthermore, tapping into this talent pool can be a solution to closing tech’s diversity gap. “Through our Disrupt Harlem Code Squad initiative, HBA aims to level the playing field for Harlem’s opportunity youth when it comes to entering the tech industry. African-Americans represent less than 2 percent of employees at major tech companies,” Regina Smith , Executive Director, Harlem Business Alliance, told NewsOne. “Shifting the narrative starts with exposure. One of the catalysts for change is introducing STEM education programs to all inner-city youth.  We educate young adults about coding, career pathways in tech as well as basic business fundamentals. We realize our youth possesses tremendous untapped potential and it is our responsibility to invest in the next generation of leaders.” Disrupt Harlem Code Squad has proven to be effective and impactful. Some of the students have received job offers from major tech companies and others have launched their own businesses. Many of the program participants pay it forward by serving as mentors. “Disrupt Harlem Code Squad targets a vulnerable subset of our community—young adults who are under or unemployed—and gives them the tools to make a positive change in their lives.  Tech is a growing industry, but members of our community weren’t being prepared to have those careers,” said Disrupt Harlem Code Squad Program Director Philomena Boateng . “We’ve made our program free because we recognize they don’t have the resources that other “non-traditional” students do to pay the high cost of programs like these. We believe that by educating our youth on a new career path, we’re also giving them the means to improve their economic situation on a long-term basis. We put real action behind inclusivity efforts in tech that some companies only talk about.” As the program gears up for its next cohort, it aims to continue to make an impact in the lives of youth. The program is currently accepting applications and the deadline is September 16. Learn more about Disrupt Harlem Code Squad .
