The Duchess of Sussex’ baby shower was held at New York’s The Mark hotel in the penthouse suite that goes for $75,000 a night. For months now, reports of Meghan Markle clashing with her royal staff have been a fixture in the British tabloid press. Some say Meghan is a nightmare to work for; others insist that she’s not getting the respect she deserves because she’s not a “traditional” royal. As is pretty much always the case with this sort of thing, it seems the truth is somewhere in the middle. Yes, there have been some growing pains during the former Suits star’s transition from actress to duchess. And yes, members of Meghan’s staff have quit , but that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s any merit to the wild claims about her “diva demands” and short temper. Of course, that also doesn’t mean that there’s absolutely no truth to the rumors that Meghan’s American ways have created something of a culture shock in Kensington Palace. Whatever the case, she may want to sort out her personnel issues ASAP, as she’s soon to make the most important staffing decision of her life. As you’ve no doubt heard, Meghan is pregnant with her first child these days, which means she and Harry are in the process of hiring a nanny. And what sort of childcare professional does Meg have in mind for the position? Well, according to Radar Online, she’d like a “Serena Williams-style” figure (?!) who holds a lot in common with Mary Poppins. It’s good that she’s keeping her expectations in check. Fortunately, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have a few months to locate this super nanny. Meghan’s not due until April , and she and Harry have arranged for “celebrity nanny” Connie Simpson to join them in a “consultancy” role for the baby’s first few weeks. “The baby is going to have no earthly idea that she’s Meghan Markle or that she’s Prince Harry’s wife and in line to the throne,” Simpson says of the job. “They will just know her for being the one to supply that milk to her and give her that comfort.” Sources say Meg and Harry are ecstatic to have Connie coming in on a temporary basis, as they’re finding the hiring process “rough” as the job is apparently a “relative lowly-paid role.” Sounds like Meghan may wind up trying to convince Connie to stay — but if the salary is as low as they say, Simpson will no doubt be eager to fly away on her umbrella. Instead of putting “Woman of the Year” in plain text, “Man of the Year” is printed with “Man” crossed out and replaced with “Woman” in quotations. However, some people on Twitter didn’t grasp this context and they believed the quotations used for Serena were insensitive to ridicule she’s received in the past. Serena has constantly been labeled a man or unhuman-like for her athletic skills and body type. Serena has yet to speak publically on the cover, but she’s been candid in the past about ridicule she’s faced about her gender. Last year, in a reddit post , Williams said: “I’ve been called man because I appeared outwardly strong. It has been said that I use drugs (No, I have always had far too much integrity to behave dishonestly in order to gain an advantage). It has been said I don’t belong in Women’s sports — that I belong in Men’s — because I look stronger than many other women do. F ormer football player Colin Kaepernick has continually used his platform as an avenue to bring attention to social injustice. He’s been honored by several institutions and organizations for lending his voice and resources to overcome issues faced by the Black community. The latest institution to recognize Kaepernick’s efforts is Harvard University. The school awarded him with the W.E.B. Du Bois medal on Thursday, the Huffington Post reported. Kaepernick joins a list of legends who have received the award in the past, including the late Muhammad Ali and Maya Angelou . While accepting the award, Kaepernick recounted interacting with a high school football team during his travels around the country. “One of the young brothers says, ‘We don’t get to eat at home, so we’re going to eat on this field.’ That moment has never left me. And I’ve carried that everywhere I went,” he said, according to the news outlet. “I feel like it’s not only my responsibility but all our responsibilities as people that are in positions of privilege, in positions of power, to continue to fight for them and uplift them, empower them. Because if we don’t, we become complicit in the problem.” Amongst the other individuals who were honored included Bryan Stevenson , Florence Ladd , and Dave Chappelle . Kaepernick has won several awards for his brave decision to stay dedicated to what he believed in even though it impacted his career. Earlier this year, Amnesty International, a global human rights organization, awarded Kaepernick its 2018 Ambassador of Conscience Award. “This is an award that I share with all of the countless people throughout the world combating the human rights violations of police officers, and their uses of oppressive and excessive force,” he said during his acceptance speech.
