‘LHHHS6’ Recap: Let’s Talk About K. Michelle And The Inventors Of Country Music

Excerpt from:

Source: Prince Williams / Getty Tonight’s episode of Love and Hip-Hop Hollywood is rife with the typical drama. A1 discovers that Lyrica left him again, but denies hooking up with a girl he met on a plane. He also claims he doesn’t know where his son is because she won’t respond to his phone calls…as if he doesn’t have Lyrica’s mother’s info. Anyway, that is how the episode begins and Lyrica and A1’s drama will be what it  is until they decide to be adults and have a real productive conversation, but that doesn’t happen in this episode.  However, K. Michelle was the impetus for an interesting conversation about country music. It’s a conversation that has been reignited by Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.” As we know, the Yee Haw Mafia were mad at the fact that “Old Town Road” was considered a country song and as a result, it was removed from Billboard’s country music charts. Then he got an assist from Billy Ray Cyrus, who is undeniably a country artist and who also happily joined Lil Nas X for the “Old Town Road Remix” so, bloop.  You can read about that saga here. Before “Old Town Road,” Beyonce faced backlash because she was scheduled to perform “Daddy Lessons” at the Country Music Awards. She still performed the song despite the Yee Haw Mafia being big mad, and she had help from the Dixie Chicks. The haters still hated, but let’s be real, this hate and this push back is because country music is stereotypically known as a White genre. The Yee Haw Mafia thinks it belongs to them but they’re sadly mistaken. Enter K. Michelle.  She was recently a guest on Jason Lee’s Hollywood Unlocked , and that incident where she was on stage somewhere in Nashville telling the audience that she can out-sing any White country singer came up again. She mentioned that she was triggered because that particular night was country music night at the venue, and when she tried to get up on stage and sing someone told her that it wasn’t her night. That was code for, “A Black girl couldn’t possibly be singing country music.” Now, K. Michelle is messy and loves attention, but hearing her explanation for why she said what she said actually makes sense. It was presumptuous for that person to say what they said. But guess what? K. Michelle is among the many Black people who are fans of  country music, even with the Whitewashing that has taken place. And I bet a lot of you didn’t know that there’s a huge country music scene in the Caribbean . I have been to a few karaoke nights in Barbados where country songs, sung by Black locals, reign supreme. All of my Bajan homies (I’m not Bajan but have visited the country enough to have friends there) mentioned that country music is big in the Caribbean, periodt. I have also seen this in St. Lucia, where my mother-in-law is from.   So, yes, Black people like country music. We created it. Yes. We created it. I don’t have much time to go into all of the details because it really is a long complex story, so I’m going to keep this as short as I can. Growing up, I grew up mostly listening to hip-hop, funk, jazz, and rock. When I got to college I began working as a broadcaster for my school’s radio station. They started all the newbies off with the blues because it was the least demanding shift. Part of my job was to announce songs and drop knowledge about the blues. That’s where I learned about how country music came to be. It stems from the blues, which stems from work songs sung by slaves.  Black people are some of the most creative people on the planet. For Black Americans, a lot of that creativity was born out of necessity. They had many coded ways to communicate with each other through the use of song and dance. They sang what were known as work songs as a way to pass the time and ease the pain of their awful predicament. They also used work songs to sneak diss the master. Seriously. They would be on the field singing about getting revenge on a lover but really, that “lover” was code for master. Blues is often about pain and what goes around comes around. Get it? What you do to me will come back around to you. It’s brilliant. You can learn more about this concept via the Netflix documentary, Devil at the Crossroads .  Anyway, work songs birthed the blues and the blues also spawned hip-hop, folk, jazz, and wait for it…country music. The banjo is a commonly used instrument in country music. It has been a commonly used instrument amongst slaves because it’s straight out of West Africa. The problem is, appropriation is wicked. In the early days, talented Black country music artists were shut out from getting major opportunities while White artists with more access began to discover the genre, copy Black pioneers, and blow up based on stolen work and privilege. Black artists also often didn’t really own their music because many of them signed with corrupt financiers and record labels who would sometimes give their music to White artists or wouldn’t even put them on their own covers. There are a lot of layers to what caused the shift in country music fandom, but it happened, and Black people moved on to other genres. Again, this isn’t to say that Black people stopped liking country music, but Black artists have been abused, blatantly copied, and shamelessly erased.  So, if we’re going to talk about the Yeehaw Mafia trying to tell Black artists what country music is and who country music belongs to then we need to tell it all because clearly, people don’t know their history…or pretend to not know it as a way to disassociate from the messed up things their ancestors may have done. Frankly, America can thank the slaves, who built this joint for free, for country music, if not most of its pop culture, including cowboy culture (because one in four cowboys were Black according to the Smithsonian ), especially when it comes to music and dance, and that’s that on that!  There were other moments throughout tonight’s Love and Hip-Hop where Apple Watts, K. Michelle and even Misterray touched out the fact that Black people invented country music. They weren’t that eloquent about it but we got the point. However, there’s only so much they could say in such a short amount of time. Missterray even stated that, “If we accept Micky Munday doing hip-hop then they should accept K. Michelle doing country.”  Eh…kind of, but again, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Plus, country music does belong to K. Michelle and any Black person who wants to claim it. It’s literally in our DNA. There’s one thing K. Michelle said in the episode that isn’t exactly true. She said that no Black woman has charted in country music. Valerie June is a contemporary country music artist who has charted and has a massive following. I tweeted about Valerie June and then got put on to Mickey Guyton , who I hadn’t previously heard of before. And then of course, there are  men, like Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish, and Ben Harper, who have been putting it down for several years. So, we are present and accounted for. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for enjoying country music and definitely don’t let anyone tell you that “Country music is for White people.” Cuz it ain’t. Tuh!  If you are interested in learning more about the history of country music and the shift that took it from Black to super White then check out this interesting NPR article . You can also learn more about work songs via this article by the library of congress.    And if you have beef with anything I wrote then take it up with history and yo’ mama. When Rihanna Wins, We All Win: Why The Fenty LVMH Deal Doesn’t Have To Be All Black To Be Monumental

Source: Aurelien Meunier / Getty The impractical shoes, the resolute gait, the single mindedness, you can spot a Black fashion girl from a mile away. They march annually straight from the halls of FIT, LIM, and the school of life into an industry that is at its best indifferent and begrudgingly democratic and at its worst deeply racist and openly hostile. Black fashion girls grew up eyeing the fantasies erected in the hallowed pages of W , Elle , and Vogue . They learned terminology from The Hills , they searched for internships on Media Bistro , they scoured Women’s Wear Daily for an edge that would allow them to join the few non-melaninated people at the top rung of the traveling circus. As they envision the change they will enact when they finally claim their seats at those exclusive tables, Black fashion girls rarely consider how their power can be limited by not only their skin color but also their job title. Sadly, when Black women reach their coveted jobs at fashion companies, it’s as an intern on entry level employee. The few that make it higher than this, retention then becomes the issue as microaggressions infiltrate the day. Change is not created by mere presence alone. It happens when the voices in the room are empowered to speak up, and no one is more empowered than Rihanna. Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty Meticulous about her image from the very beginning (she notoriously sued a British retailer for using her image without her permission), her place at one of the world’s most powerful companies is one of unprecedented control. Rihanna converting her influence as a pop star turned style icon into tangible results has the potential to create a shift in culture that could upend the pervasion of offensive key chains and bubble coats. Her celebrity has taken her somewhere that apprenticeships and assistant gigs have not yet been able to go and she leaves the door so much as slightly cracked it will change many lives. Provocative ad campaigns and reactionary diversity councils aside, leadership in the fashion industry is still overwhelmingly white and male. The height of perceived luxury is governed by stakeholders who do not include island girls from Barbados with the balls to rock doobies on the red carpet, pilfer wine glasses, and flip off the paparazzi. Source: Jason LaVeris / Getty That is why what Rihanna has done with Fenty matters even if she has done it with the support of a major conglomerate. Using an inclusive strategy that rejects ageism and mommy shaming while embracing sex and body positivity she has already set standards in the beauty and lingerie spaces that are spurning growing investment into black models, executives, and designers. Rihanna is forcing companies to invest and expand in what they don’t have. Her partnership with LVMH for Fenty Beauty proved to be a success, utilizing new selling models and turning the industry on their head. Naturally, fashion is next. Rihanna will now force the industry to support what they haven’t for a long time: Black women (whether in size or color). For a (undisclosed) price, Rihanna is using her influence and changing how we know the fashion game. One can hope, in this moment, she’ll use her profits to invest in other  Black women or this moment to give Black women a seat at the table. Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty LVMH is a company that controls the trends you’ll be wearing all summer, the bottles you cling to at brunch, and the endless selfies you snapped at Liberty State Park this weekend. Their autocratic leadership being destabilized by Rihanna will have a ripple effect throughout the entire industry. It is easy to dismiss her accomplishments because she has done it by partnering with LVMH but to do so would be to ignore the potential of her impact. If her expressing her agency as a designer means clients, contracts, and steps forward for even one Black woman then it is a win for our community. And that should matter, to the gatekeepers, to the ambitious newcomers, to us all because it’s one small step for a multinational corporate giant but it’s a leap for Black fashion girls. Mike Sorrentino: Making Enemies Behind Bars!

Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino is clearly not a workaholic, so his prison update does not come as a huge surprise. Rather it just assures us that Mike hasn’t lost too much touch with reality and is successfully maintaining his lazy lifestyle from behind bars.  According to InTouch Weekly , a strangely named blogger Larry Noodles says Mike is a “total slacker.” Larry used to be an inmate at the New York prison where Mike is currently chilling confined.  “It doesn’t sound like he’s doing any work,” the blogger has heard from other sources.  “Because he has money he’s able to pay people to do things for him, such as laundry which you can pay someone to do $20-$30 a week, or clean his bunk area.” The Sitch began his 8-month prison sentence for tax fraud on January 15 and it sounds like he’s already got the system figured out.  He seems to have a “pretty comfortable set up going during his stay,” says Larry’s sources. “They treat a wealthy guy differently. Nobody takes care of a short-term guy without money – they want something out of it.” You know, in case they wanna swing by the jail Starbucks for an afternoon tea. “They’re not going to talk to you unless you have the money,” the blogger confirmed.  “You can help someone and then have friends/relatives put money into someone’s commissary deposit.”  However, most inmates appear to be resentful of The Situation’s wealth.  “I know this because they wouldn’t be talking about him to the outside,” Larry says.  “People who talk about other inmates to outsiders are known as “rats” and you don’t really do that unless you don’t like someone. It travels back to the prison and you can get yourself in trouble.” Yikes.  So what does the former reality star do to waste his wretched days away behind bars?  Evidently, he spends it watching TV and working out.  “He had to have made friends to use the gym because every hour is claimed by groups of guys since it’s small,” shared the blogger.  Also adding that “the first month is the roughest. Some new guys get into trouble because it’s an adjustment phase.”  InTouch reported that the star also hired a fellow inmate to be his personal chef .  “Mike has befriended an inmate who happens to be a really good cook,” said Federal Prison Consultant Dan Wise. “He gives the man cash for commissary, and has him buy food for him almost daily.” Laundry, gym use AND personal meals?  Doesn’t sound like a bad “situation” to me.  View Slideshow: Mike Sorrentino in Prison: Star’s Sad Farewell to Freedom, New Life Behind Bars, Conjugal Visit “Situation” Revealed [UPDATED]

Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Did Betty/Britney Survive Another Relapse?

The drama went into overdrive on Thursday’s Grey’s Anatomy. The hospital was inundated with a string of drug overdoses after a group mixed meth and opioids.  One of the patients was Betty/Britney. Amelia was aghast because she was trying to get the teen clean, but was failing miserably.  This all occurred while Owen and Amelia were gearing up to say goodbye to the teenager and her son, Leo after her mother and father returned.  “I hope you play soccer,” Owen told Leo. “I hope you love your life,” Amelia added.  “I’m always gonna be rooting for you,” Owen later said to the youngster as Betty’s parents showed up to collect him.  That’s when news of Grey Sloan being hammered with the patients popped up.  When Betty woke up, she told her boyfriend that she had to make a big escape because she couldn’t risk Omelia seeing her there.  However, she lost consciousness, and her life was on the line. Yikes.  Betty’s boyfriend told Link that Betty worried that nobody would love her after her multitude of mistakes.  Betty had aortic dissection, and Amelia’s face dropped the moment she laid eyes on the youngster.  Bailey had to lay down the law because Betty’s parents were at the hospital, leading Amelia to question her future.  “Where would you go,” she asked Link, “if you just gave it all up? When it all seems hopeless, what’s your secret fantasy escape hatch?” Link said Barbados was his top pick.  Teddy scrubbed in to help save Betty’s life, and her reasoning was fantastic.  “Amelia may never see that little girl open her eyes again,” Teddy said. “Let me be the surgeon to tell her that we lost her.” Betty was mostly touch and go, but she was saved at the eleventh hour.  However, Linus died, and Link struggled to process it and confided in Amelia who agreed with him.  “He was a good kid,” Amelia said. “I have to call his parents.” Elsewhere on this wild episode: – Meredith was happy, and for good reason: She performed the hospital’s longest surgery and aced it with flying colors.  – Levi and Nico had breakfast, but Nico decided to work through it. But there was no argument, it brought them closer together. The only issue was that Link did not want Levi in the O.R. because he was not ready.  – Jackson wanted Maggie to go camping with him, but Maggie said no because she had to stay at the hospital because of Betty’s arrival.  What did you think of the latest episode? Rihanna Tits of the Day

Rihanna was out with her tits out….but what’s with the dude smiling at her…creep. I guess the one good thing about Rihanna getting fat like a Caribbean woman in her hometown who makes ROTI all day..is that she’s finally got some titties…..because if you’ve ever been to Barbados, you’ll know their women size the fuck up pretty quick, and it’s hard to understand why, I mean there’s an ocean to swim in, and rich white British guys to seduce in the bars in exchange for money…they don’t call it HOLETOWN for nothing… I find all this celebrity shit boring, I do think there’s more to Rihanna’s rise to fame than we are aware of, it just doesn’t make sense to me that a 15 year old girl with average at best talent and looks was plucked out of Barbados and imported to America to become a huge fucking star…out of no where…the chances of that ever happening are so slim to fucking none….I mean paperwork had to be filled out….apartments paid for…someone was bank rolling this…and saw whatever she became… The daughter of a garbage man, from a shantytown now owns half of the real estate on her island…How? Makes no sense…but maybe it’s that modern slavery thing they keep talking about…whites exploiting blacks due to white privilege, if that’s even a thing anymore, does Black Lives Matter still exist, or has white entitled rich women taken over the conversation with Believe All Women hashtags? Rihanna is Pantsless of the Day

Fat Rihanna had a party, her fourth annual party in NYC for Fashion week to promote some bullshit that I don’t care about, because I wasn’t invited to this party, so it’s one of those you need to be important to attend her party, but you don’t need to be important to buy her records, her music, her merchandise, her product lines, all making her stupid rich, which I guess is the insane thing about actual celebs…they know they are too good for you…all because you gave them money….each of you contributing to a bank balance that allows them to be a cunt. What I am saying is that this elitist, celebs are better than us shit has been debunked, it’s not real, instagrammers and youtubers who are normal people are getting almost as famous…but the problem is once they hit star level…they too become elitist cunts… I guess money and fame just makes elitist cunts…out of people who dream and work to be famous and rich and finally get what they want… It’s like this bitch doesn’t even remember living in a Shanty in Barbados…before sex working her way to the top….where she still wears skimpy tops…fat tits thanks to being fat….
