Brace yourselves, folks. Thomas Markle has given yet another interview. And he’s done so in light of his daughter and her beloved husband taking their most aggressive step yet to silence their critics and put the awful British tabloids in their place. Late last week, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry filed a lawsuit against The Daily Mail . They did so due to the publication’s alleged violation of the former’s privacy after it published excerpts from a letter Meghan wrote to her father many months ago. In his very powerful statement, trashing many outlets for their treatment of his wife, Harry never specifies the letter in question — but it’s widely believed to have been a message Meghan sent Thomas last spring, shortly after she got married. Thomas, of course, is the one who allowed this letter to be released. In this message, Meghan tells her dad that he has “broken [her] heart” by giving so many interview and airing his grievances in such public fashion. So… what has Thomas now done in response to Meghan and Harry’s lawsuit? He’s once again aired his grievances in public. “I decided to release parts of the letter because of the article from Meghan’s friends in People magazine,” Thomas told the Mail on Sunday, explaining why he betrayed his daughter’s confidence. “I have to defend myself. I only released parts of the letter because other parts were so painful. The letter didn’t seem loving to me. I found it hurtful.” This all gets a little complicated, but here is what Thomas is talking about, broken down by timeline: May 2018 : Harry and Meghan get married. Thomas does not attend the wedding. May/June 2018 : Meghan sends her dad a letter that talks about the “painful attacks” against her and Harry he has made in the recent past, asking him to please keep stop doing that. Summer 2018 : a friend of Markle’s tells People Magazine that Thomas requested a “photo op” with Meghan after receiving her letter, which was the “opposite” of what Meghan was hoping he would do or say. Early 2019 : Thomas releases Meghan’s letter to the press. And now? Thomas is saying that this People Magazine article is what set him off and gave him no choice but to expose his child’s heartfelt plea to the world. “I don’t recognize the person who wrote the letter but I still love my daughter,” Thomas told The Mail on Sunday, adding: “All it would take is one phone call and most of this craziness would stop.” And we’re sure Thomas will get it after going to the very same outlet to which he released Meghan’s letter several months ago. No doubt. The Mail on Sunday reported that Thomas is also upset by false claims that he requested and received payment for releasing parts of the letter. The outlet stated that no payment was requested or given for their article on Saturday. Meghan and Harry’s law firm released a statement last week saying the following: “We have initiated legal proceedings against the Mail on Sunday, and its parent company Associated Newspapers, over the intrusive and unlawful publication of a private letter written by the Duchess of Sussex, which is part of a campaign by this media group to publish false and deliberately derogatory stories about her, as well as her husband. “Given the refusal of Associated Newspapers to resolve this issue satisfactorily, we have issued proceedings to redress this breach of privacy, infringement of copyright and the aforementioned media agenda.” In a rare move, Harry also spoke out on this topic: “The contents of a private letter were published unlawfully in an intentionally destructive manner to manipulate you, the reader, and further the divisive agenda of the media group in question. In addition to their unlawful publication of this private document, they purposely misled you by strategically omitting select paragraphs, specific sentences, and even singular words to mask the lies they had perpetuated for over a year. A spokesperson for The Mail on Sunday later told E! News in a statement,: “The Mail on Sunday stands by the story it published and will be defending this case vigorously. “Specifically, we categorically deny that the Duchess’ letter was edited in any way that changed its meaning.” View Slideshow: Meghan Markle: 19 Cruelest Things Her Own Family Has Said About the Duchess
Source: Prince Williams / Getty Tonight’s episode of Love and Hip-Hop Hollywood is rife with the typical drama. A1 discovers that Lyrica left him again, but denies hooking up with a girl he met on a plane. He also claims he doesn’t know where his son is because she won’t respond to his phone calls…as if he doesn’t have Lyrica’s mother’s info. Anyway, that is how the episode begins and Lyrica and A1’s drama will be what it is until they decide to be adults and have a real productive conversation, but that doesn’t happen in this episode. However, K. Michelle was the impetus for an interesting conversation about country music. It’s a conversation that has been reignited by Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.” As we know, the Yee Haw Mafia were mad at the fact that “Old Town Road” was considered a country song and as a result, it was removed from Billboard’s country music charts. Then he got an assist from Billy Ray Cyrus, who is undeniably a country artist and who also happily joined Lil Nas X for the “Old Town Road Remix” so, bloop. You can read about that saga here. Before “Old Town Road,” Beyonce faced backlash because she was scheduled to perform “Daddy Lessons” at the Country Music Awards. She still performed the song despite the Yee Haw Mafia being big mad, and she had help from the Dixie Chicks. The haters still hated, but let’s be real, this hate and this push back is because country music is stereotypically known as a White genre. The Yee Haw Mafia thinks it belongs to them but they’re sadly mistaken. Enter K. Michelle. She was recently a guest on Jason Lee’s Hollywood Unlocked , and that incident where she was on stage somewhere in Nashville telling the audience that she can out-sing any White country singer came up again. She mentioned that she was triggered because that particular night was country music night at the venue, and when she tried to get up on stage and sing someone told her that it wasn’t her night. That was code for, “A Black girl couldn’t possibly be singing country music.” Now, K. Michelle is messy and loves attention, but hearing her explanation for why she said what she said actually makes sense. It was presumptuous for that person to say what they said. But guess what? K. Michelle is among the many Black people who are fans of country music, even with the Whitewashing that has taken place. And I bet a lot of you didn’t know that there’s a huge country music scene in the Caribbean . I have been to a few karaoke nights in Barbados where country songs, sung by Black locals, reign supreme. All of my Bajan homies (I’m not Bajan but have visited the country enough to have friends there) mentioned that country music is big in the Caribbean, periodt. I have also seen this in St. Lucia, where my mother-in-law is from. So, yes, Black people like country music. We created it. Yes. We created it. I don’t have much time to go into all of the details because it really is a long complex story, so I’m going to keep this as short as I can. Growing up, I grew up mostly listening to hip-hop, funk, jazz, and rock. When I got to college I began working as a broadcaster for my school’s radio station. They started all the newbies off with the blues because it was the least demanding shift. Part of my job was to announce songs and drop knowledge about the blues. That’s where I learned about how country music came to be. It stems from the blues, which stems from work songs sung by slaves. Black people are some of the most creative people on the planet. For Black Americans, a lot of that creativity was born out of necessity. They had many coded ways to communicate with each other through the use of song and dance. They sang what were known as work songs as a way to pass the time and ease the pain of their awful predicament. They also used work songs to sneak diss the master. Seriously. They would be on the field singing about getting revenge on a lover but really, that “lover” was code for master. Blues is often about pain and what goes around comes around. Get it? What you do to me will come back around to you. It’s brilliant. You can learn more about this concept via the Netflix documentary, Devil at the Crossroads . Anyway, work songs birthed the blues and the blues also spawned hip-hop, folk, jazz, and wait for it…country music. The banjo is a commonly used instrument in country music. It has been a commonly used instrument amongst slaves because it’s straight out of West Africa. The problem is, appropriation is wicked. In the early days, talented Black country music artists were shut out from getting major opportunities while White artists with more access began to discover the genre, copy Black pioneers, and blow up based on stolen work and privilege. Black artists also often didn’t really own their music because many of them signed with corrupt financiers and record labels who would sometimes give their music to White artists or wouldn’t even put them on their own covers. There are a lot of layers to what caused the shift in country music fandom, but it happened, and Black people moved on to other genres. Again, this isn’t to say that Black people stopped liking country music, but Black artists have been abused, blatantly copied, and shamelessly erased. So, if we’re going to talk about the Yeehaw Mafia trying to tell Black artists what country music is and who country music belongs to then we need to tell it all because clearly, people don’t know their history…or pretend to not know it as a way to disassociate from the messed up things their ancestors may have done. Frankly, America can thank the slaves, who built this joint for free, for country music, if not most of its pop culture, including cowboy culture (because one in four cowboys were Black according to the Smithsonian ), especially when it comes to music and dance, and that’s that on that! There were other moments throughout tonight’s Love and Hip-Hop where Apple Watts, K. Michelle and even Misterray touched out the fact that Black people invented country music. They weren’t that eloquent about it but we got the point. However, there’s only so much they could say in such a short amount of time. Missterray even stated that, “If we accept Micky Munday doing hip-hop then they should accept K. Michelle doing country.” Eh…kind of, but again, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Plus, country music does belong to K. Michelle and any Black person who wants to claim it. It’s literally in our DNA. There’s one thing K. Michelle said in the episode that isn’t exactly true. She said that no Black woman has charted in country music. Valerie June is a contemporary country music artist who has charted and has a massive following. I tweeted about Valerie June and then got put on to Mickey Guyton , who I hadn’t previously heard of before. And then of course, there are men, like Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish, and Ben Harper, who have been putting it down for several years. So, we are present and accounted for. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for enjoying country music and definitely don’t let anyone tell you that “Country music is for White people.” Cuz it ain’t. Tuh! If you are interested in learning more about the history of country music and the shift that took it from Black to super White then check out this interesting NPR article . You can also learn more about work songs via this article by the library of congress. And if you have beef with anything I wrote then take it up with history and yo’ mama. Source: VCG / Getty W hen it comes to responding to haters or as he describes them, clowns, Dwayne The Rock Johnson prefers to kill them with success. The action star took to Twitter to highlight the film’s encouraging box office numbers Hobbs & Shaw — which also stars Jason Statham — pulled in and we can pretty much guess who he was sending the message to. On August 11, The Rock sent out the first jab by sharing a Deadline article with the updated box office numbers with the movie raking in $333 million worldwide. “Not too bad of WEEK 1 box office business. Thanks everyone around the world for having a great time and supporting our little spin-off,” Not too bad of WEEK 1 box office business. Instead of sharing another article, he posted a commercial boasting the film being number one in the world… AGAIN. “Thank you everyone for makin’ this an exciting first week of box office for our lil’ spin-off @ hobbsandshaw . #1 movie and $333M worldwide, ain’t too shabby. It's been over a month since Amber Portwood was arrested on domestic violence charges . Given all that Andrew Glennon has endured thus far in the relationship, many Teen Mom OG fans assumed the couple would be back together by now. But that's not the case. In fact, it seems that both parties are gearing up for what promises to be a very ugly custody battle. For obvious reasons, Amber has taken most of the blame for the current state of affairs, but now, her supporters are accusing Andrew of capitalizing on her fragile mental state and tormenting her via Facebook. Take a look: 1. The Formerly Happy Family Amber and Andrew’s relationship has always been a tumultuous one. But we don’t think anyone expected the breakup to get THIS ugly! 2. Angry Amber As you’ve probably heard by now, Amber was arrested in July, after she allegedly attacked Glennon while he was holding the couple’s 1-year-old child. 3. Grisly Detail Amber reportedly went after Andrew with a machete and attempted to break the door down when he locked himself in a bedroom. 4. A Deeply Troubled Woman Glennon further alleges that Amber attempted suicide by swallowing a handful of Klonopin tablets, but regurgitated the pills when he called 911. 5. Jill Duggar is speaking out about something that was most likely an unpopular topic in the conservative Duggar household growing up. But, the Counting On star is encouraging women to leave their husbands… if he is abusive. While it seems like a pretty obvious solution, leaving an abusive relationship can be extremely hard. But Jill is here to let you know that it can be done. The 28-year-old recently revealed that her friend just got out of a life-threatening relationship with her spouse, and now she is advocating for all domestic violence victims . Jill was quick to act and immediately posted about the situation on her Instagram stories, sharing statistics and resources for all out there who need help. The series of photos read: “A friend of mine recently shared on social media her story as a victim of abuse,” she wrote. “Thankfuly, she is out of the harmful relationship alive.” “Did you know? 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner,” she added, and in some cases, they are not considered “domestic violence.” Jill then posted a screengrab from the Instagram account “Understanding the Narc” which offered a checklist to help people identify certain qualities in their partner, guiding them to whether or not he/she is a sociopath. While this may be reminding you of popular Hollywood thrillers, such as “Gone Girl”, this is real. This happens. And it is heartbreaking. Jill, fortunately, took this chance to directly address her followers, telling them, “Don’t turn a blind eye!” and “Support those who need help around you.” She continued to post statistics from the NCADV and phone numbers for victims to call, she even shared an article called, “Why Do Victims Stay?” In the article, the organization explains why many victims stay, one of the more popular reasons being that women from patriarchial faiths and families often stay due to outdated gender roles and not believing in divorce. Jill’s call to action may seem out of place, as her family members are firm nonbelievers of divorce and definitely have outdated ideas on gender roles . They also don’t believe in mental illnesses or personality disorders… instead of turning to therapy or medication, the Duggar clan relies on prayer and home remedies. But the fact that Jill is willing to recommend divorce and safety to women of violence is very telling. Perhaps, this Duggar is finally seeing the light of day ? To drive her point home and prove that she’s not that radical , Jill ended her photo chain with a Bible verse from Proverbs 24:11 which read: “Rescue those who are being taken away to death, hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.” National Domestic Violence Hotline can help victims, survivors of domestic violence. Source: Tristan Kallas/ Xavier Collin/Image Press Agency / Splash News Lawyer For Karen Civil Says Writer Never Served Lawsuit Remember the debacle last year when Canadian blogger @WannasWorld shared DM’s from Nicki Minaj ? Last week, reports surfaced from The Blast claiming “Wanna,” is suing Karen Civil, her website and CEO Christian Emiliano for defamation and seeking a whopping $1.5 million in damages. According to court documents obtained by The Blast: She says as she processed the events that unfolded with her and Minaj, she then turned her attention to the Live Civil group chat, where they requested she delete the Tweet. [She] says she immediately deleted the tweet per their request. Shortly after deleting the Tweet, she claims to have been cut out of the group chat. She claims they then told her she was no longer employed by Civil or any of her companies…. says they told her Minaj was a client of Civil’s other company. She claims the CEO, Christian Emiliano, then took to Twitter to go on a “public rant” about her. [She] claims he damaged her reputation with his comments and hurt her ability to get work. $1.5 million is a looooot of money to sue over an unpaid internship – isn’t it? But hold up, a lawyer for Karen Civil claims that his client hasn’t even been served with a lawsuit. BOSSIP received the following statement from Karen Civil’s Attorney Walter Mosley: We have not been served with any lawsuit so we can not respond to the specifics of this alleged case. However, my firm was hired to respond to defamation and character assault perpetrated by this young lady many months ago and it seems like her actions have persisted from reading this article. At this time we will reserve our rights to exercise the full extent of every available remedy both financial and/or filing for injunctive relief. We should also remind [her] that she is still under a comprehensive NDA w/ Karen Civil. Karen Civil is the CEO & Owner of all her companies & properties. Sooo is there a lawsuit or not? And if there is, does Thompson even have a case? BOSSIP saw communication between Wanna and Emiliano where Emiliano explicitly stated to his staff that the website has relationships with certain artists and brands through Always Civil and to “make sure any content or opinions on this platform and your own is always respectful and a priority. This includes: Nicki Minaj, Teyana Taylor, Hillary Clinton, Pharrell, Iman Shumpert, Lil Wayne, Nipsey Hussle, Lauren London, YG, Pusha T, and a few others. Understood?” to which Thompson replied, “Okay noted.” This also isn’t the first time Wanna has sought financial compensation over this issue. A GoFundMe seeking $2500 was posted ten months ago. As you can imagine, the Barbz are heating up for Wanna over the lawsuit claims already. you were fired by the company because you violated their social media policy while you were under their employment. all nicki did was drag you and post the dm. can you come up with something else? @WannasWorld — Kevin Thomas. Source: Nintendo / Nintendo of America Rumors have been swirling for months about Nintendo dropping a new Switch model , today (July 10) the company finally unveiled a new cheaper, smaller unit the Nintendo Switch Lite and despite being a scaled-down version of the original, it still offers almost the same functionality of its predecessor. The new leaner but still meaner Nintendo Switch Lite arrives September 20 and will only cost you $199, a whole $100 cheaper than the original. It will feature a 5.5-inch screen a slight downgrade from the Switch’s 6.2-inch display but will still run games at a resolution of 720p. The Switch Lite is pure handheld mode ditching the hybrid ability to connect with your TV via the dock, so think it of it as a better 3DS model. Also gone are the removable Joy-Cons, rumble feature, and IR motion sensors. Don’t fret though, you can still connect a Joy-Con to the Lite as well as the pro Switch controller as well as the Switch Pro Controller, and the Poké Ball Plus. There might be issues playing Switch titles like Pokémon Let’s Go or 1-2 Switch that requires motion controls. Another glaring omission is the four directional buttons which have now been switched out with a traditional D-Pad. Nintendo says if you do try to buy a game that is not compatible with the lite from the E-Shop, you will get a warning before you confirm your purchase. Like its predecessor, the Nintendo Switch Lite comes in different colors a yellow, turquoise, gray model. A limited-edition Pokemon-themed design will launch alongside Pokemon Sword but will not feature the game in a bundle strangely. While it has not been confirmed by Nintendo, there have been rumblings of an “enhanced” version of the Switch coming for more passionate gamers. The chatter for that console hasn’t been as loud as it was for the Lite, but we won’t be shocked if it indeed is true. You can get a glimpse of the console in action in the announcement video below. — Photo: Nintendo/Nintendo of America
