I was like ‘oh my god, am I really being considered for this, am I worthy?” Yet, she gets how important this is, adding, “As a woman, as a black or Latina or trans woman, we have to constantly give words of affirmation to ourselves. It’s just hard for us. I’m just focusing on amplifying my voice, trying to get it out there as much as possible.” Here’s what we definitely know: Mj is more than worthy. She is gorgeous, inside and out, and her embodiment as Blanca on Pose literally makes you want to be a better person. Mj is joy personified. But most importantly, campaigns like this one, with Mj at the center matters. As I’ve written before , it’s no secret that we live in a transphobic world that has tried to push trans women into the shadows and use violence and discrimination to deny them the right to exist and their womanhood. That’s got to change. And no, this Olay Body partnership will not eradicate that oppression, but as affirming representation like this campaign becomes the norm, the more transgender women can come into the light, be celebrated for the women they are and help raise awareness around the issues that they face. Visibility is the answer and this is a step in the right direction. Because remember: Like Black cis women in America, Black trans women are also beautiful, crucial to our community and contribute daily to our collective liberation. My hope is that more beauty brands get with the program because it’s been time for our trans sistas to be in the spotlight. Leah Messer SLAMMED For Daughter’s Ariana Grande Halloween Costume: She Looks Like a Teenager!

The stars of the Teen Mom franchise receive an endless amount of flak for their parenting decisions. In many cases, this criticism is well-deserved, such as when Jenelle Evans protects David Eason against allegations that he’s abusing her children. But there are times in which the fans over-step their bounds and hurl unsolicited advice at moms who aren’t doing a damn thing wrong. Leah Messer is often on the receiving end of this sort of concern-trolling. Leah’s daughter Aliannah suffers from muscular dystrophy but most of the “advice” she receives has to do with Ali’s twin daughter, Aleeah, otherwise known as Gracie. And sadly, most of it has to do with concerns over the 9-year-old’s attire. Aleeah is a cheerleader , and photos from her competitions have attracted disturbing comments about her allegedly “age-inappropriate” attire. Earlier this week, Leah posted pics of her daughters’ Halloween costumes, and now it seems we have to relitigate this dumb “controversy” all over again. (No, we don’t know why she waited until November to post Halloween pics, but like we said, she’s got a lot on her plate.) Hilariously, the twins decided to dress as modern pop icons, while Leah’s youngest dressed as a member of the Hogwarts student body: “When they want #ArianaGrande #Beyonce andddd a #witch … Mom makes it happen,” Leah captioned the pic. And sadly, the criticism started rolling in immediately: “Aleeah looks way too grown up,” wrote one commenter . “Gracie looks 15,” another person remarked. “That girl is gonna be troubleeeee.” Yikes. Thankfully, not all of the comments were so negative: “OMG I thought the one that was Ariana Grande was dress[ed] up as you LMAO,” one person remarked. “Now they are starting to look like mini yous!” another echoed. “Gosh they have grown, so beautiful,” a third wrote. “Oh my goodness!! They look fabulous! Aleeah looks like she is grown!” remarked another fan. Obviously, the vast majority of the criticism is baseless and idiotic, and the commenters should keep that crap to themselves — especially when we could be focused on more important issues like why Leah chose to give her kids such similar names! Like it’s not confusing enough having a Leah and an Aleeah under the same roof, you have to throw and Aliannah into the mix, too?! Sorry, we just needed  a brief vent session. Anyway, stop ragging on Leah for how she dresses her kids, y’all. It’s a bad look. View Slideshow: Leah Messer Opens Up About Daughter’s Tragic Illness: She’s Trapped in This Body!

What better place to air out your dirty laundry than a nationally syndicated television game show? Leah Messer to Young Moms: THIS Is How You Deal With Baby Daddy Drama!

If there's anyone who understands the complications that can arise from raising children with someone you're no longer in a relationship with, it's Leah Messer. Leah has three kids and two baby daddies. That's not a terribly uncommon set of circumstances, particularly in the context of the Teen Mom franchise. But unlike some of her co-stars, Leah has been to hell and back with her exes, yet has always managed to make amicable co-parenting her top priority. So perhaps there's no better candidate to offer advice to the stars of the latest Teen Mom spinoff, Young and Pregnant . In a video posted to MTV's YouTube page this week, Leah offers some words of wisdom to the network's newest stars. “When dealing with baby daddies,” she tells the camera, “communication is key.” “Both parents deserve to be in the child’s life,” Leah adds. “That is the most important of all,” she concludes. Sound advice, to be sure. Of course, given the show's difficulty with building an audience, the cast might prefer that Messer offer advice about how to attract viewers. But that's a conversation for another time. If you're a longtime Teen Mom 2 viewer, then you know that Leah has endured a whole lot of ups and downs in her love life over the years. These days, Messer is hooking up with Jeremy Calvert , the father of her youngest daughter. But it looks as though the former couple has stopped just short of a formal reconciliation. Leah and Jeremy slept together while in New York for this year's reunion show, and insiders say Messer would love to give their romance another chance. Unfortunately for her, it seems Jeremy is more hesitant. Leah tells friends she's keeping all of this from her kids so as not to create confusion. But on last week's TM2, Messer's daughters stole her phone and found out all about Jeremy. Maybe someone should make a video for Leah with advice on how to lock your phone!

Nick Cannon: I Still Hate that Scared Punk Eminem!

Nick Cannon has more serious beefs than shading Kylie Jenner and Danielle Bregoli. Nick is nursing an 11-year-old grudge. He’s been feuding with Eminem since 2008, when the infamous rapper took cheap shots at Nick’s then-wife, Mariah Carey. More than a decade later, Nick is making it clear that he still feels that Eminem needs to be held accountable for what he said. Speaking on T.I.’s podcast ExpediTIously , Nick Cannon opens up about his longstanding resentment towards Eminem. He clearly doesn’t like that the rapper never met up with him to settle things. “He didn’t wanna battle me,” Nick observes. He says that: “it could have went down.” “I was like, whatever he wanna do, I’m with it,” Nick shares. The feud began in 2008, shortly after Nick and Mariah had first married. “I think we were flying back on a jet from Africa or somewhere,” Nick recalls. “And this motherf–ker drops a song, like, talking s–t,” he complains. Within that song, Nick accuses, Eminem was “Calling her [Mariah] all kinds of b–ches and hoes.” Well, that’s enough to upset anyone, but especially her husband. Nick recalls his furious response: “I’m like, ‘this is my wife. This is my new wife.'” “I wrote a letter first,” he reveals. A letter ? We suppose that the telegram lines were down. “I don’t even know if Twitter had come out yet,” Nixk admits. Twitter came out in 2008, but existing and being popular are not the same thing. “So, I wrote this long-ass letter,” Nick relates. Within the letter, the content was “pretty much saying, ‘look, I respect you as an artist.'” That’s a great way to get off on the right foot. “‘I’m actually a fan,” Nick admitted within the message. “And,” he told Eminem at the time. “I think you’re one of the best ever to do it.” “But from man to man,” Nick wrote. “You are talking out of pocket to my wife.” “You gotta be held accountable for that,” Nick expresses. Goodness. If this were ye olden times, Nick would have had to strike Eminem across the face with a fancy glove to challenge him to a duel. “So,” Nick recalls telling him. “I need to see you face-to-face.'” He even says that he “went looking for” Eminem. Again, this is some straight-up feudal era knights-of-honor nonsense. Nick even says that he would have flown to Detroit for this confrontation. “I was like, look, if you wanna get on the phone, if I gotta go to Detroit,” Nick recalls. This guy was big mad . “You done disrespected my wife,” he explains. Nick explains his extreme fixation: “I gotta show my wife I’m a man, number one.” Toxic masculinity ruins the party once again, we see. “And two, he said my name,” Nick notes. Which summons him instantly. Like Beetlejuice. Nick concludes: “I said, ‘I know I’m not going to be able to out rap you, but I will whoop your ass.'” Well, we’ll say this much for Nick Cannon: He has a very grounded and realistic estimation of his abilities. It sounds like Eminem does, too, which is probably why he never went face-to-face with Nick to square things away. View Slideshow: 21 Celebrity Feuds We Never Saw Coming

‘LHHHS6’ Recap: Let’s Talk About K. Michelle And The Inventors Of Country Music

Excerpt from:

Source: Prince Williams / Getty Tonight’s episode of Love and Hip-Hop Hollywood is rife with the typical drama. A1 discovers that Lyrica left him again, but denies hooking up with a girl he met on a plane. He also claims he doesn’t know where his son is because she won’t respond to his phone calls…as if he doesn’t have Lyrica’s mother’s info. Anyway, that is how the episode begins and Lyrica and A1’s drama will be what it  is until they decide to be adults and have a real productive conversation, but that doesn’t happen in this episode.  However, K. Michelle was the impetus for an interesting conversation about country music. It’s a conversation that has been reignited by Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.” As we know, the Yee Haw Mafia were mad at the fact that “Old Town Road” was considered a country song and as a result, it was removed from Billboard’s country music charts. Then he got an assist from Billy Ray Cyrus, who is undeniably a country artist and who also happily joined Lil Nas X for the “Old Town Road Remix” so, bloop.  You can read about that saga here. Before “Old Town Road,” Beyonce faced backlash because she was scheduled to perform “Daddy Lessons” at the Country Music Awards. She still performed the song despite the Yee Haw Mafia being big mad, and she had help from the Dixie Chicks. The haters still hated, but let’s be real, this hate and this push back is because country music is stereotypically known as a White genre. The Yee Haw Mafia thinks it belongs to them but they’re sadly mistaken. Enter K. Michelle.  She was recently a guest on Jason Lee’s Hollywood Unlocked , and that incident where she was on stage somewhere in Nashville telling the audience that she can out-sing any White country singer came up again. She mentioned that she was triggered because that particular night was country music night at the venue, and when she tried to get up on stage and sing someone told her that it wasn’t her night. That was code for, “A Black girl couldn’t possibly be singing country music.” Now, K. Michelle is messy and loves attention, but hearing her explanation for why she said what she said actually makes sense. It was presumptuous for that person to say what they said. But guess what? K. Michelle is among the many Black people who are fans of  country music, even with the Whitewashing that has taken place. And I bet a lot of you didn’t know that there’s a huge country music scene in the Caribbean . I have been to a few karaoke nights in Barbados where country songs, sung by Black locals, reign supreme. All of my Bajan homies (I’m not Bajan but have visited the country enough to have friends there) mentioned that country music is big in the Caribbean, periodt. I have also seen this in St. Lucia, where my mother-in-law is from.   So, yes, Black people like country music. We created it. Yes. We created it. I don’t have much time to go into all of the details because it really is a long complex story, so I’m going to keep this as short as I can. Growing up, I grew up mostly listening to hip-hop, funk, jazz, and rock. When I got to college I began working as a broadcaster for my school’s radio station. They started all the newbies off with the blues because it was the least demanding shift. Part of my job was to announce songs and drop knowledge about the blues. That’s where I learned about how country music came to be. It stems from the blues, which stems from work songs sung by slaves.  Black people are some of the most creative people on the planet. For Black Americans, a lot of that creativity was born out of necessity. They had many coded ways to communicate with each other through the use of song and dance. They sang what were known as work songs as a way to pass the time and ease the pain of their awful predicament. They also used work songs to sneak diss the master. Seriously. They would be on the field singing about getting revenge on a lover but really, that “lover” was code for master. Blues is often about pain and what goes around comes around. Get it? What you do to me will come back around to you. It’s brilliant. You can learn more about this concept via the Netflix documentary, Devil at the Crossroads .  Anyway, work songs birthed the blues and the blues also spawned hip-hop, folk, jazz, and wait for it…country music. The banjo is a commonly used instrument in country music. It has been a commonly used instrument amongst slaves because it’s straight out of West Africa. The problem is, appropriation is wicked. In the early days, talented Black country music artists were shut out from getting major opportunities while White artists with more access began to discover the genre, copy Black pioneers, and blow up based on stolen work and privilege. Black artists also often didn’t really own their music because many of them signed with corrupt financiers and record labels who would sometimes give their music to White artists or wouldn’t even put them on their own covers. There are a lot of layers to what caused the shift in country music fandom, but it happened, and Black people moved on to other genres. Again, this isn’t to say that Black people stopped liking country music, but Black artists have been abused, blatantly copied, and shamelessly erased.  So, if we’re going to talk about the Yeehaw Mafia trying to tell Black artists what country music is and who country music belongs to then we need to tell it all because clearly, people don’t know their history…or pretend to not know it as a way to disassociate from the messed up things their ancestors may have done. Frankly, America can thank the slaves, who built this joint for free, for country music, if not most of its pop culture, including cowboy culture (because one in four cowboys were Black according to the Smithsonian ), especially when it comes to music and dance, and that’s that on that!  There were other moments throughout tonight’s Love and Hip-Hop where Apple Watts, K. Michelle and even Misterray touched out the fact that Black people invented country music. They weren’t that eloquent about it but we got the point. However, there’s only so much they could say in such a short amount of time. Missterray even stated that, “If we accept Micky Munday doing hip-hop then they should accept K. Michelle doing country.”  Eh…kind of, but again, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Plus, country music does belong to K. Michelle and any Black person who wants to claim it. It’s literally in our DNA. There’s one thing K. Michelle said in the episode that isn’t exactly true. She said that no Black woman has charted in country music. Valerie June is a contemporary country music artist who has charted and has a massive following. I tweeted about Valerie June and then got put on to Mickey Guyton , who I hadn’t previously heard of before. And then of course, there are  men, like Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish, and Ben Harper, who have been putting it down for several years. So, we are present and accounted for. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for enjoying country music and definitely don’t let anyone tell you that “Country music is for White people.” Cuz it ain’t. Tuh!  If you are interested in learning more about the history of country music and the shift that took it from Black to super White then check out this interesting NPR article . You can also learn more about work songs via this article by the library of congress.    And if you have beef with anything I wrote then take it up with history and yo’ mama. Source: WENN/Avalon / WENN Lizzo got on the wrong side of Twitter last week after using Twitter to out a Postmates driver she accused of stealin g her expensive food by name. The “Juice” star has since apologized for putting the driver on blast, who has since come out saying she fears harm will come to her based on Lizzo’s accusation of theft. TMZ reports : The driver, Tiffany W., tells TMZ … her world was turned upside down when the “Truth Hurts” singer excoriated her on Twitter — to her near-million followers — saying, “this girl Tiffany W. stole my food she lucky I don’t fight no more.” Lizzo also included a screenshot of her profile photo. This has scared the crap out of her. She’s afraid to leave her home and even go to work, for fear someone might harm her or even worse. As for the delivery incident … we’re told Lizzo’s order was supposed to go to a Boston hotel, but there was no room number listed and no one answered the phone linked to the account. We’re told Tiffany went the extra mile and hit up the hotel concierge. She says she went into the lobby and continued to try to contact the customer and heard nothing back. Tiffany ended up waiting for a total of 10 minutes and finally left. As for the food … it was seafood, which Tiffany doesn’t even eat. For what it’s worth, Postmates says that the driver was not in the wrong and waited for five minutes to deliver the food before moving on to her next destination. — Photo: WENN
