Points Were Made: Teacher Suspended For Saying The Confederate Flag Is A Sign ‘That You Intend To Marry Your Sister’

Source: Boston Globe / Getty Teacher Suspended For Disparaging Comments About The Confederate Flag A secondary school teacher in  Georgia was suspended for referring to the confederate flag as a sign that an individual plans to marry their own sister. I meaaaaaan…..some points were made. The Richmond County School System ended up launching an investigation after said teacher put a photo of the confederate flag on their board with a message that stated: “A sticker you put on the back of your pickup truck to announce that you intend to marry your sister. Think of it like a white trash ‘Save the Date’ card.” One of their students at Hephzibah High School ended up being upset by the message, so she told her mother about the whole thing. The student’s mother, Melissa Fuller, voiced her anger about the matter in a post on Facebook, which is where it was widely circulated and prompted discussion from other parents at the school along with local residents. “A lot of [the discussion] is that it’s not morally correct. It’s unethical. It’s just something you don’t want to discuss today in today’s world and especially inside of a classroom,” the mother told   WRDW-TV . Fuller added that her daughter had been suspended after wearing a belt that features a Confederate flag buckle to school after being asked to remove the belt. “If she can’t wear that belt buckle, then why is it appropriate to make an assignment out of it?” she asked.  Now, the teacher in question has been placed on administrative leave, according to the   Augusta Chronicle . The school district told the outlet, “The Richmond County School System is committed to creating a diverse, equitable learning environment for all students. The language used in the example was unacceptable and has no place in our classrooms.” While some insist that the Confederate flag–first used during the American Civil War– simply serves as a major source for  Southern pride, it’s extremely offensive to many who argue that the symbol is synonymous with white supremacy, bigotry, slavery, racism, etc. Now, the flag is regularly used by neo-nazis throughout the United States.

Officials in New Zealand are calling for an investigation after a student’s body reportedly went undiscovered for almost two months in his college dorm room. According to New Zealand news outlet Stuff , the unnamed student was found dead around 11 p.m. on Monday after students at the University of Canterbury’s Sonoda Christchurch campus complained of a strong smell coming from the room. It is not yet known how he died or how it went unnoticed for so long, but a close friend told the publication that the student would sometimes “go off the grid for a week or so.” Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). According to a friend, the dead student’s stepfather contacted his friends on Sunday looking for him. “He contacted my friends first to try and reach him and when they couldn’t, he told us he would call the police,” the friend told the outlet. Now, the school and the man’s family are working with law enforcement and a coroner will determine his cause of death, New Zealand police said in a statement . And I think clearly that’s not been present in this case, Hipkins said. “We’ll be looking very closely at the regulatory and legal arrangements around the halls of residence and hostels to make sure they are as strong as they need to be,” he said. “But clearly I’m really concerned about this case.” Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Black Women Entrepreneurs Pay Off Debt For 30 Students At Clark Atlanta University

T wo Black women entrepreneurs paid it forward by giving back to students in need at their alma mater. Pinky Cole , the creator of the plant-based burger restaurant Slutty Vegan, and Harlem Hops owner Stacey Lee —both alums of Clark Atlanta University—helped 30 seniors who attend the historically Black college pay off their debt, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. These two women went back to their alma mater and asked for a list of seniors who wouldn’t be able to graduate due to outstanding balances. Then they partnered to clear them. https://t.co/UmdvX9MfAp — #becauseofthemwecan (@Becauseofthem) September 12, 2019 Lee, who founded Harlem’s first-ever Black-owned beer bar, was determined to find a way to assist students who are struggling with the cost of tuition. She contacted Cole to explore ways they could join forces and eliminate financial burdens for students so they’d be able to walk across the graduation stage. Cognizant of how the student debt crisis has hit HBCUs the hardest, the women were motivated to utilize their resources to make a difference in the lives of students of color. Cole and Lee—who are members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated—connected with the school and asked for a list of seniors who needed to pay off debt so they would be able to graduate. They randomly chose 30 students to help and surprised them on campus to let them know that their outstanding balances have been handled. “God has been so good to us both. It just felt right,” Cold told Because of Them We Can . “Growing up in a single-family household, and being the first to go to college, I know what it feels like to not know where the money is coming from. Lauren Swanson: Is She Going Back To School To Pursue A Career?!

The Duggars might easily be one of the most fascinating families on reality TV, but similar to the Kardashian family, many wonder what the heck they actually do for a living.  Besides getting hefty paychecks from TLC, some of the Duggars help their dad, Jim Bob, with his commercial real estate business, while others do mission work or hobbies that they try to pass off as “careers”.  As for the women, well, it’s no surprise that due to the family’s strict religion they seek more of the traditional roles as a stay-at-home mom and housewife. *hard eye roll* But there is one Duggar who  (almost)  impressed us by showing a desire for something other than bible studies and cooking three meals a day. Lauren Swanson recently shared some fun facts about herself in a new Instagram post, and besides the fact that the Counting On star can yodel, she caught our attention by opening up about her education. Usually, it’s not shocking to hear someone use their education as a “get to know me” tool, but considering the Duggar family’s home-schooled background and lack of college degrees, it’s a pretty big deal. However, just because Swanson did graduate with a degree doesn’t mean she is putting it to use. But thanks to her IG followers who asked all the hard questions, she got candid about her future career goals .  Unfortunately, it was slightly disappointing.  “I went to college when I was 16 and finished my Associate’s degree in Nursing at 18,” Lauren explained in her post.  Her fans needed more of an explanation. Like, you know, why she isn’t a nurse then?  “I would have to take my boards exam to practice. However, really nursing isn’t my passion,” she admitted.  Lauren explained what she meant in another post after a second fan asked if she has ever worked before and whether or not she would ever go back to work. In response to that comment, she said, “An Associate’s Degree is only two years worth of schooling. I would have to go back for an additional year or two to be a certified nurse.” I’m going to go ahead and guess that this means 1. she hasn’t worked in the past considering she dodged that question and 2. she seems to have no intention of actually going back to school, or ever getting a real career.  No judgment here. It’s important to follow your heart, but I must admit it would be quite refreshing to see one of the Duggar’s care about something other than reproduction.  And God. Don’t @ me.  Lauren and her husband Josiah Duggar found out back in May that they are expecting their first child together , which came as very special news considering the tragic miscarriage these two suffered months prior.  “Recently, we walked through losing a little one through miscarriage, but we’re excited to have another little one on the way now,” Josiah said in a video filmed by TLC. “We’re just extremely grateful for this baby and just going through a lot really shows us how good God is and that miracles do happen.” We’re extremely happy for this couple, and whether or not the mom-to-be decides to continue her education one day, we know she will enjoy this next chapter of her life the most.  View Slideshow: Josiah Duggar & Lauren Swanson Relive Their Whirlwind Courtship on Counting On!

Exonerated Five’s Korey Wise Donates Backpacks, School Supplies To Underprivileged Children In Harlem

A fter enduring a harrowing experience as a result of a flawed criminal justice system Korey Wise —a member of the Exonerated Five—is turning his pain into positivity through activism. According to the Amsterdam News , the Harlem native recently provided youngsters in his community with school supplies and backpacks just in time for the new school year. #BackToSchool : Korey Wise of the #Exonerated5 distributes school supplies and inspiration in Schomburg Plaza https://t.co/cI8xMEeVuy — Amsterdam News (@NYAmNews) August 30, 2019 Wise teamed up with a group called Friends of Public Schools Harlem Inc. for the initiative. The organization provides local schools in the community with the supplies needed to ensure the educational success of their students. Friends of Public Schools Harlem Inc. also donates funds to schools for the creation of health and wellness and arts programs. The group is on a mission to provide 4,000 students in Harlem with backpacks and supplies through a grant provided by The Migdol Family Foundation. At the event hosted by Wise at Harlem’s Schomburg Plaza over 200 students were served. Wise says he was grateful to be able to pay it forward to children from his community. “It was great to be back at Schomburg Plaza where I grew up and give something back to today’s children,” he said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “Being here and providing school supplies helps students start the school year better prepared to succeed and sends a message that somebody cares. It was great to see the smiles from parents and children. I thank the Friends of Public Schools Harlem and the Migdol Family for making it happen.” FPSH board member Jerry Migdol says that Wise’s support is instrumental in leveling the playing field when it comes to educational resources. Since being exonerated in 2002 Wise—who has become a criminal justice reform advocate and public speaker—has continually used his platform and resources to give back. In 2015, he donated $190,000 to the University of Colorado’s Innocence Project to help fight wrongful convictions. Blessed: Big Sean Confirms Another Twenty88 Album With His On-Again, Off Again Boo Jhene Aiko Is On The Way!

Source: Victor Boyko / Getty Another Twenty88 Album Is Reportedly In The Works Big Sean and Jhene Aiko’s relationship is confusing, to say the least. The two have been collaborating on music for years now, but they released their first collaboration album under their name Twenty88 back in 2016. Though rumors were flowing before that, this is the same year they went public with their romantic relationship, as well. Things got so serious that Jhene got Sean’s face tattooed on her, but fans started to suspect that they broke up once she got it covered about a year later in 2018. Their break-up wasn’t confirmed by either of them until more recently, as Jhene released a freestyle about Sean titled, “Triggered” and Sean followed that up with a single aptly titled, “Single Again.” Though this is about as much confirmation as someone needs to know these two are broken up, things got even more confusing once fans realized Jhene was the one singing on her ex’s song about being single. This suggests that the two are still good friends post-break-up and want to put their personal feelings aside to keep their working relationship alive–which Sean seems to have confirmed on Friday. Once again causing some confusion on the status of their rollercoaster of a relationship, the two were seen having lunch together at Il Pastaio in Beverly Hills on September 13. Though they reportedly dined together, they left separately, and paparazzi caught Sean as he was driving away. When The Hollywood Fix asks Sean if another Twenty88 album is coming, the rapper smiles and gives a big nod. See his confirmation of new music with Jhene for yourself:

Privilege Loses: Twitter Drags NFL Reject Tim Tebow Over Comments On Not Paying College Athletes

Source: Jared Wickerham / Getty Twitter Drags NFL Reject Tim Tebow Over Comments On Paying College Athletes College sports have preyed on underprivileged kids and their families since the beginning of time. Mainly African American kids, under the guise that if they can get to college, do good on the field, and stay out of trouble ,they’ll get to the NFL and make enough money to support their family for eternity. It’s no secret that the money aspect and providing for their family is the main driver of these kids playing college sports. LeBron James and his Undisputed platform have been some of the most vocal on how young adults playing sports in college should be paid for all the money they’re generating. When in college, kids cant receive money based on their skills, name, or likeness, per the NCAA rules. Thanks to LeBron and his platform, all eyes were on California recently as they voted on a bill to allow college players to profit . The bill passed in a unanimous vote of 72-0, stunning everyone. While everyone with common sense is happy that these children now have the opportunity to get paid for their hard work, there is one person not on the NCAA payroll saying differently. . @TimTebow passionately expresses his thoughts on the California Senate passing a bill allowing student-athletes to have endorsements. pic.twitter.com/W5uBW7ePNm — First Take (@FirstTake) September 13, 2019 Failed NFL quarterback Tim Tebow went on ESPN’s First Take to give a white privileged opinion. Tim expresses that he never wanted to be paid in college because it was only about his family members’ favorite college team winning. This might have been the worst take ever on live TV. He is essentially endorsing slavery and is 100% unaware that he’s doing so. Fortunately, Twitter wasted no time ripping him a new one and you can check out all of the damage below. I learned from Tim Tebow today that those kids, and all like them, would be selfish for taking a small percentage of the billions of dollars earned off their talents. — Josh Moon (@Josh_Moon) September 14, 2019 Tim Tebow out here talking about how college athletes shouldn’t get paid when his parents could afford to send him beer money and he still never got laid — lindsey ok (@lindseyyok) September 14, 2019 Tim Tebow stop with the BS. Nobody trying to hear that when you got College coaches making 9-10 million a year for a decade and Universities making Millions of players! #Paytheathletes — Kendrick Perkins (@KendrickPerkins) September 13, 2019 A couple of things the Tim Tebow story has showed me. A lot of people love capitalism except when it applies to 18-22 yr olds And some are really worried about “how would it even work?!?!” As if schools haven’t figured out how to build spaceships in their athletic depts. — Robert Flores (@RoFlo) September 14, 2019 Just in case anyone is curious, this is what “privilege” sounds like. I guarantee @TimTebow never missed a meal growing up because his parents didn’t have the means, nor does he understand what having to help your mother pay bills so the lights stay on feels like. https://t.co/lpOMu2RqMG — David Mulugheta (@DavidMulugheta) September 13, 2019 A separate point: the only reason Tim Tebow is employed right now is because of his college reputation. Tebow is, quite literally, making money off his college likeness — Jordan Zirm (@clevezirm) September 13, 2019 Florida sold roughly 35,000 Tim Tebow No. 15 jerseys. The royalty for Tebow on those jerseys, if he were able to split it with the school would have been around $50,000. pic.twitter.com/6pMyhohDAH — Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) September 13, 2019 This Tebow slander on the TL is so important. Felicity Huffman Sentenced to 14 Days In Prison For Role In College Admissions Scandal

When news of the college admissions bribery scandal first went public in March, two actresses quickly emerged as the most prominent figures ensnared in the FBI’s “Varsity Blues” sting operation. Now, one of them has been sentenced to prison for attempting to buy her daughter’s way into the school of her choice. Five months after Felicity Huffman pled guilty  to paying out $15,000 in bribes to rig the SATs in her child’s favor, the actress — best known for her role in the ABC drama Desperate Housewives — has been sentenced to 14 days behind bars. Huffman spoke in her own defense at her sentence hearing this afternoon, echoing her attorney’s claims that she did not realize anyone would be harmed by her actions. “I am deeply sorry to the students, parents, colleges and universities impacted by my actions.” she told the judge. “I have inflicted more damage (on her daughter) than I could’ve ever imagined,” Huffman continued. “I was frightened, I was stupid and I was so wrong. I am deeply ashamed of what I have done.” In addition to her jail time, the 56-year-old received a $30,000 fine, 250 hours of community, and one year of supervised release. Huffman was joined in court by her husband, actor William H. Macy. The couple bee-lined to waiting SUVs after leaving the courtroom and did not speak with members of the press. Huffman will start her prison sentence on a yet-to-be-determined date in the near future. While Huffman got off with a slap on the wrist (Prosecutors originally wanted her to serve four months in prison, but reduced their recommendation to one month following a favorable parole report.), her status as a convicted felon will follow her for the rest of her life. This means that she will never be able to own a firearm (probably not a matter of great concern to the actress), and will not be allowed to vote until she’s completed her probation. In the wake of the news about Huffman’s sentencing, many thoughts turned to her alleged co-conspirator Lori Loughlin. The Full House actress is the other famous face associated with the scandal, and she’s in a much tougher position than Huffman. Loughlin turned down the plea deal that Huffman accepted — this, despite facing far more severe charges. (While Huffman pled guilty to shelling out $15,000 in bribes, Loughlin stands accused of doling out $500,000 to help secure admission to USC for both of her daughters.) Strangely, Huffman’s sentence might translate to good news for Loughlin, as it’s considered a major defeat for prosecutors, who might now be inclined to offer the actress a second plea deal. Hopefully, this time, she’ll be smart enough to take it. We’ll have further updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.

Kenyan Government Slammed After Girl Commits Suicide For Alleged Period Shaming

More here:

Source: TongRo Images Inc / Getty The death of a 14-year-old girl who committed suicide has sparked outrage in Kenya. According to The Guardian , the girl took her own life after a teacher allegedly embarrassed her for having her period during class. The girl’s mom said her daughter died last Friday after she got her period in class and stained her clothes. The teacher allegedly called her “dirty” and sent her away from the classroom in Kabiangek. According to the girl’s mother, it was her first period and she didn’t have a sanitary pad. The girl’s death has sparked protests from women parliamentarians and reignited national talk about “period shaming” and access to menstrual products. A 2017 law requires the Kenyan government distribute free sanitary pads to all schoolgirls. However, poor execution of the law has been the subject of a parliamentary investigation. On Wednesday, female MPs took over the education ministry to protest the girl’s death and to discuss the program, said MP Esther Passaris on Twitter . More than 200 parents also made their outrage known outside the school in Kabiangek this week, according to local media. They condemned both the teacher and the alleged lack of action from authorities. Cops used tear gas to break up the protestors and they arrested at least five people. The school has been temporarily closed and a regional police chief, Alex Shikondi, said the girl’s death is being investigated. Access to menstrual products is a big issue across sub-Saharan Africa due to an inability to afford sanitary products. This causes girls to avoid school during their periods. A 2014 Unesco report estimates that one in 10 girls are absent from school during menstruation, which means they’re not present for 20% of their schooling year. Kenya was considered a leader to addressing this issue, especially when they passed their 2017 law requiring the government give out free pads to schoolgirls. However, some people question whether the $4.5 million set aside for the program has helped with access to sanitary products and increased school attendance. Passaris said on Wednesday that the program’s budget would have to be “at least 10 times” larger than it is now if all Kenyan schoolgirls were to get free sanitary towels. The education ministry and Teachers Service Commission of Kenya are carrying out their own investigation into the schoolgirl’s death, according to Passaris, and the report is scheduled for publication in the coming weeks. “We had a candid discussion about sanitary towels, the little girl who died, and the investigation that is ensuing,” she said. “We need to make it so that girls aren’t ashamed of their periods, and I don’t think we’ve won that battle yet.”
