arvin diesmos A very rare large animal was found in the Philippine forest this month. The animal is relative to a komodo dragon and is as large as the giant monitor lizard. Philippine locals have hunted the said lizard, but it never had a name until recently. The giant monitor lizard is very elusive and lives primarily up in the trees. It can grow as long as six-feet and its official name is Northern Sierra Madre Forest Monitor Lizard. The monitor lizard is a frugivore(fruit-eater). It has bright yellow spots along its back. Scientists believe that there could be many other undiscovered species in the Philippine forests. “We suspect that many, perhaps dozens of new species of small vertebrates — reptiles, amphibians, and possibly birds and mammals — may await discovery in the forests of the northern Philippines,” said Rafe Brown, assistant professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas.
