Scientists are starting their tests to check if ultrasound can be used as reversible contraceptive for men. According on the early work of University of North Carolina, a blast of ultrasound to the testes can safely stop sperm production for about six months. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grants $100,000 for the research and because of this they will push ahead with more clinical trials. The researchers are ultimately looking forward that it could offer a new birth control option to couples throughout the world. According to Dr James Tsuruta, lead researcher, this could provide men with up to six months of reliable, low-cost, non-hormonal contraception from a single round of treatment. The long term goal of the team is to use ultrasound from therapeutic instruments that are usually found in sports medicine or physical therapy clinics as cheap, long-term, reversible male contraceptive desirable for use in developing to first world countries. The researchers explain that once the testis has stopped its production of sperm and all “sperm reserves” have been used up, the man will be temporarily infertile.
