47-year-old Nina Ananiashvili Is Georgia’s Prima Ballerina

At age 47, Nina Ananiashvili remains as one of Georgia’s leading ballet dancers. She still performs star roles in grueling ballets and winning rave reviews. Ananiashvili was born in Tbilisi. She was a child figure skating champion, then she moved to Moscow at age 13 to study ballet. Because she came from one of the outlying Soviet republics, she was initially grouped with weaker dancers and this has led her way to study with a better teacher. In 1981, she began soloing with the Moscow Bolshoi Ballet and touring the world at a time when few Soviet citizens were allowed to travel outside the country. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, she had an opportunity to bring her talents to other ballet companies around the world. In 2004, the veteran of the stage was personally asked by the newly-elected Georgian president to help rebuild the country’s struggling state ballet. The ballerina believes that she has a role to play as cultural ambassador for their country. In 2009, she has completed a 16 year run as prima ballerina with the American Ballet Theater in New York City. 47-year-old Nina Ananiashvili Is Georgia’s Prima Ballerina is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading
