Ben & Jerry’s announced yesterday that it will remove a controversial ingredient from its world famous ice cream: By the end of 2013, it aims to phase out all genetically-modified organisms from its product line. At the moment, only 80% of Ben & Jerry’s ingredients fit this description and the company does admit on its website that removing all will be “complex” because a single flavor can be compromised of 40 ingredients. But the brand that prides itself on being all-natural is dedicated to this cause. Genetically modified foods are created to resist insecticides and herbicides and many believe they cause problems to both the environment and those who consume them. “We support those calling for transparency and a consumer’s right to know and support the push for mandatory labeling,” writes Ben & Jerry’s on its site. “We ought to all have freedom to choose whether or not we want to eat food that has been genetically engineered. We think this is a fundamental right.” Also a fundamental right and shameful plug? Your chance to read up on the latest dessert recipes at Food Fanatic!
