Yesterday, we learned that Zooey Deschanel is pregnant with her first child. The actress described herself as “over the moon” with anticipation and she issued a statement that seemed to indicate that she and boyfriend Jacob Pechenik would be raising the child together. It’s a little strange, because Zooey and Pechenik have only been dating for a few months. But even weirder is the fact that Zooey has adamantly insisted in dozens of interviews over the years that she has zero interest in ever having children. Obviously, the actress has a right to change her mind, but the stunned fan reaction is understandable. After all, Deschanel was married to Ben Gibbard for three years and she dismissed the notion of becoming a mom every time the topic was broached by the press. Following her divorce, Zooey dated Jamie Linden for almost two years. Again, seemingly no interest in having kids. In fact, Deschanel famously seemed to get a little pissed when people brought it up and she stubbornly insisted that her focus was – and always would be – her career. “Like every woman is dying to give birth!” Zooey told Marie Claire in 2012. “I like kids, and I like being around kids, but it was never an ambition…I like working. That’s what I like doing. I like work.” As for Jacob, little is known about him (dude is basically a non-entity on social media), but he’s a producer with about 20 credits to his name and he and Zooey were first linked in August of 2014. First Cameron Diaz gets married and now Zooey is having a kid. Thank God the world still has Oprah to rep for the single ladies.
