Hicham El Guerrouj once ran so gracefully it was like a poem unfolding and so fast that his 1,500m world record of 3:26.00 from 1998 still stands. Yet it is failure we discuss. He understands. At the YOG, most will wear defeat, but he is reassurance that there is a road back. Across eight, long Olympic years he failed, then won two golds in five days. FOR a man who lived life by a stopwatch, it is inevitable that Hicham El Guerrouj is not late. In no time, one could say, his charm is evident.
