New Black Netflix?: KweliTV Launches TV For The Global Black Community

…A new version of your beloved Netflix is set to hit computer screens this winter and we think you might be interested in the platform. KweliTV, an online streaming service, will offer more diverse programming and what’s more, it was founded by a Black woman, DeShuna Spencer. Kweli (pronounced kwal-lee) means truth in Swahili and the new platform plans to offers documentaries, news programs, original docuseries, educational content and independent films representing the global Black community. Spencer is a communications and journalism major from Jackson State University and also the brains behind Empire Magazine, [an] online destination focused on combining journalism with social activism in order to seek change. [ Madamenoire ] The World’s First Non-White Modeling Agency Successfully Pushes The Envelope A 26-year-old Canadian woman, Nafisa Kaptownwala, is taking the diversity issue in the modeling industry to heart. Kaptownwala recently launched the world’s first exclusively non-white modeling agency called Lorde Inc. Based out of London, Lorde finds most of its models the old-fashioned way, on the streets. And so far, the agency is finding success in its unique business model. Kaptownwala started the agency after she had begun working in fashion and realized just how few models of color were represented. The agency currently represents 60 models from various races, ethnicities, and cultures. In just one year, Lorde has secured contracts with the likes of Dazed and i-D magazines as well as the fashion company Adidas. [ Madamenoire ] Apple CEO Tim Cook Won’t Reveal How Many Apple Watches Were Sold …Quarterly sales figures are in, although unreleased, and reports suggest that the Apple Watch did well enough. The company turned in first quarter sales figures earlier this week. Apple CEO Tim Cook said that Apple Watch exceeded their sales estimates, even though we don’t know what the estimations were. Cook doesn’t want to share the numbers because it will “give insight to competitors.”… The Apple Watch could have sold between 2 and 4 million units in its launch quarter, snatching up a 75 percent share of the smart watch industry — even though there’s no real competition in said industry.
