The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is a NASA space probe that’s been orbiting the Moon since June 23, 2009. On March 19 it will mark its 1000th day in orbit! To celebrate, NASA released this cool animation showing the history of the Moon: According to current thinking, the Moon itself formed after a planet roughly the size of Mars slammed into the Earth at a glancing blow. This colossal impact threw… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : DiscoverMagazine Discovery Date : 14/03/2012 14:30 Number of articles : 2

Pac-Man Figure Seen in Mimas

The Cassini spacecraft orbiting around Saturn has captured an interesting and intriguing new view of the tiny moon Mimas. Mimas is a moon of Saturn that was discovered in 1789 by William Herschel. The name Mimas was taken from a son of Gaia in Greek mythology. It is the 20th largest moon in the solar system by diameter but, it is known to be the smallest astronomical body. The moon is about 400km (250miles) across. It has a typical and distinctive feature of colossal impact crater called Herschel. The probe evaluated that there was temperature differences across the moon’s surface and it produced a map which looks like the 1980s Pac-man video game icon. Scientist were still uncertain for the reason why Mimas displayed such variations, however, it may have a probable relationship to the variety of textures present in the surface materials. Some textures maybe capable of retaining heat better than others. Cassini is a joint venture between the US space agency (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Italian Space Agency (ASI). The mission was extended until 2017. Pac-Man Figure Seen in Mimas is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading
