Flaming Lips Enlist Grace Potter, Neon Indian In O Music Awards Record Attempt

Band is aiming to top Jay-Z’s live concert record during the June 27 O Music Awards live stream. By Gil Kaufman The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images It takes a village to topple a record. That seems to be the thinking behind the Flaming Lips ‘ efforts to gather an army of musical cohorts to help them take aim at Jay-Z’s record for the most live concerts in 24 hours. As part of a record attempt that will take place over 24 hours during the June 27 O Music Awards , the Lips will try to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records by playing shows in eight different cities. We can now reveal that they will get some support from an eclectic group of musicians that includes festival favorites Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, modern bluesman Gary Clark Jr., country singer Hunter Hayes, and indie rock acts Givers, New Fumes, Neon Indian, and Grimes. Beginning June 27, the O Music Awards will play out across all of MTV’s screens and linear networks in the form of the world’s first 24-hour award-show live stream via a historic and hectic bus ride through the Mississippi Delta, the birthplace of rock and roll. Two-time O Music Award nominees and multiple Grammy winners Flaming Lips will board a vintage tour bus named Endeavor and zigzag across the region in an attempt to break the world record currently held by Jay-Z for the most live concerts in 24 hours. More support acts will be named soon, and each will play a full set before making way for the Lips to take the stage for their mini-sets with unique collaborations and special guests. Tickets for the shows go on sale Thursday (June 7) and can be purchased through the individual venues. Partial proceeds from the show will be donated to VH1’s Save the Music Foundation . Also, the entire show will be streamed live on OMusicAwards.com and accessible on all platforms including mobile and tablets. “I don’t remember if I was asked or if I volunteered. … But I’ve accepted the job of not driving but commandeering the Magical Mystery Merry Prankster bus,” Lips frontman Wayne Coyne told MTV News. “I’ve accepted the attempt at breaking the world record of performing eight shows in 24 hours. And I’ve explained to the music freaks at MTV, VH1 and CMT that I am not a host. … But I always liked the way Jerry Lewis would get all sweaty toward the end of his yearly telethon. To play and sing Flaming Lips songs at eight in the morning, well … I’m open to new experiences.” During the 24-hour live stream, 24 awards will be presented to winners. Fans can vote now up until the show via the O Music Awards website in a wide assortment of categories that include Must Follow Artist on Twitter, Best Online Concert Experience, Most Adorable Viral Star, Fan Army FTW, Best Music App and Digital Genius Award. Nearly 10 million votes have been cast since voting kicked off on May 23. You never know what’s going to happen on the live stream, where the Lips will be constantly “on,” as cameras follow them on the bus, on the stage and everywhere in between. Along the way, the band will meet up with fans and presenters who will dole out awards and, of course, deal with all the pitfalls and unexpected detours that a multi-state road trip entails — flat tires, stops at musical monuments, and perhaps the occasional music-making special guests and hitchhikers. The day before the big show, June 26, the Lips will release a physical version of The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, the previously digital-only album featuring unique collaborations with Yoko Ono, Nick Cave, Bon Iver, Ke$ha and an exclusive new track recorded with Ghostland Observatory’s Aaron Behrens. Heart, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals Rock ‘VH1 Divas’

Acclaimed duo team up with newcomers for ‘Crazy on You.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Grace Potter Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Decades of rocking out have not faded Heart’s spark. The duo shut things down at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” when they played their breakout 1976 single “Crazy on You.” This time, the ladies got some back up from relative newbies Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, with Potter splitting vocal duties with Heart frontwoman Ann Wilson. Nancy Wilson kicked off the set with a nimble solo that scored excited cheers from the soldiers. The screams reached a fever pitch when the bass line from “Crazy” rattled in the speakers, and the service members went wild. Sporting a long dark coat with a generous silver pendant dangling from her neck, Ann helmed the first verse before strutting down the runway to the center of the crowd for the chorus. Potter, who was manning the keys, chimed in for the second verse, later picking up her mic and meeting Ann in the middle of the stage. Although she wasn’t center stage, Nancy still commanded attention, leaping in the air as she clutched her guitar. Potter and Ann closed out the performance by belting the last notes in unison. (Click here to see photos from “VH1 Divas Salute The Troops” .) Potter and crew also got a chance to run the stage solo. After an introduction from “Jersey Shore” residents Snooki and The Situation , the band cranked out their heady single “Paris (Ooh La La).” Despite her shimmery cocktail dress, Potter looked every bit the vintage rock bad girl, strumming her guitar, whipping her hair and wailing like she’s been at this since forever. The bassist and another guitarist plucked fiery solos, and Potter finished the song at the edge of stage, belting directly to the enthused service members. After a few final whips of her mane, Potter wrapped up the song with a sultry grin and strutted back toward her band. The ladies added some rock-and-roll flair to a night packed with pop hitmakers like Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Keri Hilson. Snooki, The Situation ‘Excited’ And ‘Honored’ To Attend ‘VH1 Divas’

‘Anything to give back to veterans,’ Snooki says of attending star-studded troops tribute. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Matt Elias Snooki and “The Situation” at the “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” Photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic When “Jersey Shore” mainstays Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino aren’t downing cocktails and getting rowdy in clubs on TV, they’re red-carpet regulars at shindigs across the globe. However, on Friday night the duo hit up a star-packed event that even humbled the cheeky “Shore” residents: “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops.” The “Shore” stars were in the building to present at the armed-forces tribute at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, and told reporters that they were thrilled to lend their support to the show. “I was actually honored to be here,” The Situation said. “I have so much respect for our troops. I heard that there was a possible invite, and it was an honor just to be here.” For Snooki, showing support for the troops is a cause close to her heart, as she has a family member who once served in the military. “I’m actually really excited to be here. The fact that I was even invited to come — that’s an honor. My uncle, he was a veteran and he died awhile ago,” Snooki said. “Anything to give back to veterans, anything. That’s really close to me. It’s awesome.” Supermodel Marisa Miller and soul songstress Brandy were also on hand to present at the event, which was hosted by flame-haired funnywoman Kathy Griffin. Pop and hip-hop vixens Katy Perry, Keri Hilson and Nicki Minaj rocked the stage. Music collectives Sugarland, Paramore and Grace Potter & The Nocturnals — who were joined by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart — also churned out onstage awesomeness. “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” airs Sunday, December 5, on VH1 at 9 p.m. ET.
