Gautrain receives licence to operate The high speed Gautrain was issued with a safety permit allowing it to legally operate between Sandton and the OR Tambo International Airport. “Viva Gautrain viva. Above all, viva public transport viva,” Transport Deputy Minister Jeremy Cronin said in handing over the certificate to the Bombela operating company. He hoped that the Gautrain would change the mindset that public transport was only for the poor and that it would encourage people to choose rail instead of road transport. Receiving the certificate, Bombela operating company chief executive officer Alain Esteve said the handover followed a long period of planning, design and preparation. The start of Gautrain’s official operations marked the beginning of a new era in the company’s existence. “It is a symbol of [the company’s] new commitment to put the safety of our customers and staff as our number one priority,” he said.
