August Schellenberg Dies; Canadian Actor Was 77

August Schellenberg, a Canadian Mohawk actor known for portraying Native Americans on the big and small screens, has died of cancer at age 77. He died peacefully in Dallas surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Montreal to a Swiss father and a Mohawk mother, he used his native background and National Theatre School of Canada training to a prolific career. Schellenberg portrayed Native American mentor Randolph in all three Free Willy movies, and scored an Emmy nomination for his role in HBO’s Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee . It was actually the third time that Schellenberg portrayed the famed Native American figure Sitting Bull, a part which the actor called his favorite role. He is survived by his wife, actress Joan Karasevich, and three daughters.
