Count Brooke Shields among those who were shocked and appalled by Miley Cyrus’ VMA performance last night. The actress, who actually starred on Hannah Montana as the title character’s mother, lamented the singer’s bumping and grinding and nearly naked Twerking while co-hosting Today this morning. Miley Cyrus Team: Concerned Over VMA Performance “I just sort of want to know who’s advising her, and why it’s necessary,” Shields of Miley. “I mean, the whole finger thing, and the hand… I feel like it’s a bit desperate. Are you trying to be Gaga? But Gaga is … she’s got a genius behind all of it, that’s not just display.” Many would agree: There’s a method behind Gaga’s madness, a performance art to everything she does. It’s not crude edginess for the sake of crude edginess. Kelly Clarkson Tweeted an obvious reference to Cyrus after seeing the routine, referring to ” pitchy strippers ” at the event, while the PTC has come down hard on MTV in general for such a lewd ceremony . “It’s not necessary. It’s uncomfortable,” Shields added of Miley’s performance. “And the tongue out, I think it’s just a little desperate … trying so, so hard.” In the end, though, Brooke did give Cyrus a back-handed compliment: “[Miley] can sing beautifully. And I feel like if she let’s that lead, rather than her bottom lead… [But] she went for it. You’ve got to give her credit. We’re all talking about her.” That is very, very true.
