Diana Nyad because the first person to ever swim from Cuba to Florida without the aid of a shark cage today, arriving on the shore of Key West a bit before 2 p.m. EST, 53 hours after departing from Havana. The 64-year old first attempted this trek in 1978 and three times again in 2011 and 2012. “I have three messages,” a sunburned and swollen-lipped Nyad said on the beach. “One is, we should never, ever give up. Two is, you’re never too old to chase your dream. Three is, it looks like a solitary sport, but it is a team.” Learn more about Nyad’s historic feat in the following video and join President Barack Obama (“Congratulations to @DianaNyad. Never give up on your dreams.”) in sending a congratulatory message to Nyad now. Diana Nyad Sets Swimming Record
