Lauren Silberman Pulls Up Lame at NFL Combine

It’s safe to say that Lauren Silberman will not become the first female to play in the NFL. The former collegiate soccer player tried out over the weekend at a regional combine in New Jersey… and only managed to get two punts into the air – one traveling 19 years, the other 13 yards – before pulling up lame with a quad injury “I tried staying off [my injured leg] and waited for today,” said Silberman afterward. “I didn’t even take kicks in warm-ups. It’s pretty hard to know that you’ll be in pain and I wanted to work through it and I certainly tried to, but I just couldn’t do it today.” Rules prohibiting women from playing professional football were lifted in December 2011, with commissioner Roger Goodell making a rather strong argument in favor of the fairer sex having a shot: “Times are changing. The military is about to allow women into combat. If women are going to be fighting on the battlefield, how can we stop them from participating in football? It’s not fair.” True. But with Silberman making Tim Tebow look like a viable NFL player, it may be awhile until another woman gets a shot.
