Michael Richard Landers’ Wife Defends Abductors, Says They "Made Him the Man He is"

The pregnant wife of Michael Richard Landers, abducted in 1994 but found this January, is speaking out in defense of his abductors (his grandparents). She says they “made him the man he is, my husband and best friend.” They’re still close, too … literally. The couple lives next door to them! Yes, the grandparents who ran away with Landers, now 24, when he was only 5 years old are getting support from the woman he grew up to marry. Michael’s wife, Bobbie Landers, declared in an emotional Facebook post, “His ‘grandparents’ didn’t follow the law, but they did what was right .” “Sometimes, United States laws don’t help or protect the people they should. He was five. He remembers his birth parents and what they were like.” “He had been [under their care] since he was a 6 month old baby. He was where he wanted and needed to be to be safe and become the man he is today.” “My husband and best friend.” Michael, then known by his real name, Richard Wayne Landers Jr., and Bobbie are expecting their first child; she has two sons from a previous relationship. Landers’ grandparents, living in a nearby Minnesota town under an alias, recently confirmed the identity of the child they stole so many years ago. According to the police, they abducted him in July 1994 because they were “upset over pending court proceedings” regarding the boy’s placement. They were charged with “interference,” but that count was dismissed in 2008 after the case went cold. However, it was reopened in September. The boy’s mother and stepfather were apparently “jumping up and down for joy” when investigators said he had been found; it’s unclear if they have reunited.
