The Voice Recap: Can Top Five Make Dreams Come True?

“I know there’s somebody who watched this that was told ‘No’ today.” “They were told no. And after seeing that performance, it’s like you realize that the impossible is just a word, because it can be done. And dreams can come true.” – Pharrell Williams, on an inspirational Koryn Hawthorne Survive and advance. That has been the mantra of The Voice top five throughout the NBC hit’s eighth season, and it becomes harder every week. Somebody’s dreams will come true this season (or millions of viewers, according to Pharrell), while four others will see theirs dramatically dashed. Who will that lucky young man or woman be? View Slideshow: The Voice Season 8 Semifinals Round One: Coaches’ Choice Joshua Davis (Team Adam) took on Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” an odd choice in a sense given its somber, heartbreaking nature. Koryn Hawthorne (Team Pharrell) was slightly better on U2’s “One,” delivering a solid but unspectacular cover that never quite hit its emotional peak. Meghan Linsey (Team Blake) fell similarly uneven on Sam Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One,” continuing her mercurial run thus far this season on NBC. India Carney (Team Christina) gave one of her most refined performances yet, thanks to her powerful if imperfect take on Sara Bareilles’ “Gravity.” Sawyer Fredericks (Team Pharrell): Coach gets some credit for his choice of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” a perfect fit for his protege. Round Two: Hometown Dedications Joshua Davis (Team Adam) picked The Band and Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” as he tried to make his case for a spot on the finale. Koryn Hawthorne (Team Pharrell): Her rendition of “Oh Mary Don’t You Weep” inspired Pharrell’s hyperbolic gushing above, and well, it was warranted. Meghan Linsey (Team Blake): Like a seasoned veteran, she took on George Jones’ “Tennessee Whiskey” like a boss. Blake and America? Proud. India Carney (Team Christina): Now that’s impressive. Her take on Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” was powerful, nuanced and technically proficient. Sawyer Fredericks (Team Pharrell): Despite the backup singers not helping his cause, Sawyer nailed it again on Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years.” One never knows, obviously, when it comes to the voters and their tastes, but he’s hands down the favorite to take this title home on talent … right? Well? Who do you think was the star of The Voice Season 8 Top 5? And who do you think will be headed back to their hometown for good Tuesday?
