Analyzing: "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway

one of my favorite short stories of all time (the executioners song by n.mailer is my favorite novel). where do i begin? http://www.litcharts.com/lit/theoldmanandthesea/symbols i'll start with a quetion, how do “we” identify with the Santiago? i feel santiago through the boys heart. he loves him through his respect for the ageless wisdom and tenacity of the old man he recognizes as more than just any ordinay old man. i often find myself always making sure i have a beer ready for an old freind when i make a visit or am visited. I always wondered where i got that from until recently. i thought it due to some kind of cultural up bringing, but i realize now its the idea of the boys spirit in me when i am feeling in a good mood. on the other side of the coin, i can identify with the old man cuz i am getting old and can be a stubborn s.o.b too! added by: iamaman
