Generals Have Warned That Fat Americans Are Now National Threat

According to two retired generals, the increasing rate of obesity among young Americans could weaken the future of the U.S. military. More than 25 percent of young Americans now are too fat to fight. The generals want Congress to introduce laws that will give US children better nutrition in school such as providing them with better foods with less sugar, salt and fat. John Shalikashvili and Hugh Shelton were former chairmen of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff. They wrote “Obesity rates threaten the overall health of America and the future strength of our military.” Both the former generals consider it a serious problem from a national security perspective. Together with more than 130 other retired generals, admirals and senior military leaders; they call on to Congress to pass new child nutrition legislation. The warning comes in the middle of mounting fears that childhood obesity has become an “epidemic” that affects one in three young American people.
