Josh Baze has been all over the place the last couple of weeks, including recent features on MTV 2′s “Sucker Free” and BET’s “106 and Park”. You also may have seen and heard his single “We Made It” on ESPN’s Sports Center. For those who don’t know Baze is part of the up and comers movement in hip-hop that includes ASAP Rocky, Azealia Banks, Iggy Azalea, and Mac Miller. Entertainment Weekly even compared the Brooklyn rapper’s sound to the early motif of Kanye West. Interestingly enough, his manager and head producer is Griffin Guess — one of the main masterminds behind Kanye’s “Graduation” album. Baze is also the protégé of legendary video director Hype Williams. Check out the video for “We Made It” below, along with our interview and make sure you tell us if you Hate It Or Love It?!?! How are you different than other rappers? I have a story to tell…my story is more detailed and more of a conscious rapper. I want to send a positive message to the fans, no gimmicks, nothing flashy. I still shop at thrift stores. How do you think that growing up in Brooklyn has inspired your sound? Growing up near some of the greatest rappers of all time inspired me to tell my story from my point of view. Coming from Crown Heights to California is a story in itself. Being in NYC in general inspired me to stay on my grind. What was it like working with Hype Williams? The best director in music right now. I Didn’t expect the opportunity as a new artist. My manager set everything up so I was extremely blessed. I feel like this is the biggest achievement as of now. When you found out you won the MTV U “Freshman 5″ how did that make you feel about your current state in the industry? I didn’t really think that I had that many fans out there who were going to support and vote me to the winning circle. I am overall blessed for everything. What can we expect from your debut album that will drop on March 20th? My album is an all purpose album., Soul meets conscious and music meets positivity. New fresh sound and there will be at least one track for everyone. What are three words that describe you as a person? Open-minded, conscious, and vivid. What do you think?
