British music executive, television producer and entrepreneur Simon Cowell is to be knighted for his services to the British music industry. Cowell’s superb eye for talent made him famous for his blunt and often controversial criticisms, insults and wisecracks about contestants and their abilities. His dedication to charitable causes, including the star-studded Haiti charity record for the victims of last year’s earthquake, is also set to be rewarded. Westminster sources say the move was prompted by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and will be announced in the Queen’s Birthday Honours on June 12. “PM Brown was particularly impressed by the way Simon responded to his suggestion to release the record for Haiti by dropping everything to ensure it was a success. “And there’s also no doubt Simon has brought a great deal of happiness to millions of people with his music and TV shows,” said the source. Cowell has previously publicly distanced himself from the idea of official honours but in private has told friends that a knighthood would be “his dream”.
