Death toll was earlier reported that the derailment killed 11 people but was later revised. Twenty people were reported injured, and five were almost critical. More than 200 passengers were rescued on the scene. The derailed train was caught in a landslide. It was a small diesel-powered train with two-carriages. It was traveling on the Val Venosta line. just inaugurated in 2005, the railway is basically new. According to Thomas Widmann, head of the Transport Department for the local government, the most probable cause of the landslide was a broken irrigation pipe. The mud entered the carriages, suffocating the passengers. The train came to rest when it reached the trunk of two big trees, according to a local journalist.
