On Tuesday morning (March 2), hundreds of people were evacuated from the New York courthouse where Wayne (born Dwayne Michael Carter) was to be sentenced due to a smoky basement fire. According to The Associated Press, courts spokesman David Bookstaver said the fire was apparently started in a wooden contractor’s shed, causing the evacuation around 10:30 a.m. after the building filled with smoke. NY1 reported that the courthouse would be closed for the rest of the day as a result of the fire, which caused injuries to five firefighters, two civilians and one prisoner. It took crews over an hour to bring the blaze under control. Wayne’s lawyer, Stacey Richman, confirmed the reports, telling MTV News, “We have no idea when things will normalize.” Around 1 p.m., Richman said in an e-mail that she was still trying to figure out what would happen with the court appearance. After winning a sentencing delay in order to undergo eight root canals , Wayne was scheduled to be formally sentenced and turn himself in to begin his one-year prison term in New York on Tuesday. Wayne, 27, pleaded guilty in October to attempted criminal possession of a weapon. Wayne has been working feverishly in recent weeks to complete a number of videos and songs to stay relevant during his physical absence. He released a statement to fans late Monday, in which he tweeted , “Yesterday i smiled, today i smirked, tomorrow i stop … Thanks for your thoughts and prayers, they’re needed. The F is for family, friends, and fans……….thank u………..your love and prayers are felt. They kant lok up my heart bekuz y’all already have it on lok. ……thank u.” Related Artists Lil Wayne
