Dale Hansen, a Dallas-area sports anchor, has offered an epic defense of Michael Sam, the former Missouri star turned NFL prospect who just came out as gay. Sam, “the SEC defensive player of the year and expected to be a third to fifth-round pick in the NFL draft, tells the world he’s gay,” Hansen began his most recent commentary.” “The best defensive player in college football’s best conference only a third to fifth round NFL pick? Really? That is shocking, and I guess that other thing is, too.” Several NFL officials tell SI that Michael Sam coming out will hurt his draft status, due to its effect in the locker room; it would be uncomfortable, because that’s a man’s world.
