Mumford & Sons Call New Album ‘A Different Experience’

‘It’s challenging in all the right ways,’ Marcus Mumford tells MTV News about the band’s Sigh No More follow-up. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Winston Marshall and Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons Photo: MTV News Mumford & Sons have spent most of 2011 working on the follow-up to their breakout Sigh No More album (when they weren’t touring the U.S. by rail , of course). Though they’ve been performing a handful of new songs live, last month they officially unveiled a somber new tune called “Ghosts” during a stop at a Philadelphia radio station. But as the year draws to a close, there’s still no official release date (or even a title) for the new album, which sort of makes sense, especially since they’re still working on it, as the band told MTV News backstage at the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas in Los Angeles. “We’re still recording. We don’t really like to put any boundaries on it; we’ll keep going until it’s right,” frontman Marcus Mumford said. “It’s definitely a different experience from the first one, as it should be, I think. But it’s been challenging in all the right ways. It’s going well. “I think we just want the songs to be good, and to sound right, and to feel like we’ve expressed everything we want to as straightforwardly and honestly as we can … and we’re working towards that,” he continued. “We’re really enjoying playing the new songs live, and we still feel that our recorded work should be adverts for our live work. The fact that we call it work is a bit pretentious — it’s not work, it’s just playing music with your mates. It’s really fun, and it still is. I think we’re getting on better than we ever have.” Mumford said that the songs on the new album have been inspired by their whirlwind year, which not only saw them break through in the U.S., but found them going to places they never thought they’d go and meeting the kinds of folks they never thought they’d meet. “We’ve been writing as we go, and you can’t deny the fact that our circumstances around us will always affect our writing, so we sometimes intentionally put ourselves in circumstances that we want to be inspired by,” he explained. “We went to Nashville for a couple weeks in January and did some really cool writing there; we felt really happy with some of the stuff that came out of it. We stayed in this little farmhouse and had some friends who are musicians come play with us. We played a house show, just had a really nice time. And then we write on the road in these hectic places with lots of people around, and I suppose we’ve always put in ideas that we pick up from conversations with people, and things that we read and things that we listen to and feel.” Of course, there’s also good news for fans of Sigh No More : From the sound of things, the follow-up isn’t going to stray all that far from that debut. In fact, it’s basically the same songs. After all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. “If you’re asking whether they’re different from the first album,” multi-instrumentalist Ben Lovett laughed, “what we’ve actually done is taken all the songs from the first album, used all the same chords, some of the same melodies, and just tweaked the lyrics!” Related Artists Mumford & Sons

Phoenix Try To ‘Disappear’ On ‘Somewhere’ Soundtrack

But the French rockers are set to reappear when they start recording new album in 2011. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Phoenix Photo: MTV News Phoenix have spent nearly two years becoming progressively more famous thanks to their Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix album. So, when the French group agreed to write the score for Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere,” they were presented with a rather unique challenge: to make themselves disappear. “We had to hide our music in something bigger and more important, which was a story, and it was a very nice job just to try to disappear and to blend,” guitarist Laurent Brancowitz told MTV News on Sunday at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas. “And it was really easy, because the overall sound of the movie was already very [much] like music, with car engines, and to blend our music, it was very cool. We always fight a lot when we are creating, and this time it was different, it was a really nice adventure.” And in writing the soundtrack to the film — which stars Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning and opens nationally on December 22 — Phoenix also began tucking away ideas for the follow-up to Wolfgang too. And they came up with so many that starting early next year, they’ll begin working on a new album. Just don’t ask them what those ideas might be. From the sound of things, they haven’t even shared them with each other. Out of necessity, of course. “We are going to start the 4th of January, to be precise, in Paris,” guitarist Christian Mazzalai said. “We have many ideas, but we keep them in our boots. We are too afraid to destroy them if we say them to you or each other.” And though work is set to begin on the new album in early 2011, fans might not hear it until the following year. Seems Phoenix are taking this whole disappearing thing pretty seriously. “We are just going to begin working on it and see what happens,” bassist Deck d’Arcy smiled. “In our dreams, it may come out next year, but probably not in reality.” Related Artists Phoenix

Vampire Weekend Draw Inspiration From Kate Hudson For New Album

Frontman Ezra Koenig says watching ‘Love Guru,’ ‘Bride Wars’ is helping band ‘think about the art’ they want to make. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend performs during KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas on Sunday Photo: Karl Walter/Getty Images In 2010, Vampire Weekend released a rather amazing album of pan-ethnic pop, debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart , showed up on the “Eclipse” soundtrack , hung out with Lil Jon, the RZA, a very drunk Jake Gyllenhaal and a Jonas Brother and even got sued by the unwitting star of their Contra album cover . Needless to say, it was a pretty hectic year, the kind most bands would follow with a rather lengthy (and well-deserved) break. But, as they told MTV News on Sunday at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas in Los Angeles, Vampire Weekend aren’t most bands: They’re already in the early stages of work on the follow-up to Contra. To be honest, though, they’ve been in those early stages for a while now. “We’re always thinking about the next album. … I would say we’ve been thinking about the next album since before we finished the last one. It’s natural. … I think that’s the way we work,” frontman Ezra Koenig said. “In terms of working on it, have the four of us gotten into the studio and started laying down tracks for it? Not in any formal way, but in some way that’s not even the most important part of the process. So the ball’s already rolling. When and how we start working on it — we definitely need a break — but the talking about ideas, that’s already happened, and there’s definitely stuff floating around.” And just where have VW been gathering inspiration for that “stuff”? Why, from the works of noted auteurs Mike Myers, that dude who plays Dwight on “The Office” and, uh, Kate Hudson, of course. “Collectively, we’ve been watching a lot of big-budget comedies that may or may not have been successful at the box office,” drummer Chris Tomson said with a smile. “Usually not successful,” Koenig added. ” ‘The Love Guru,’ a notorious financial failure, ‘The Rocker,’ [that] didn’t do too well at the box office, ‘Bride Wars,’ that was the exception. … Any time you interact with a piece of art — whether it’s something that goes on to be your favorite or something that maybe you find issue with — still, that’s going to help you think about the art you want to make.” Sounds, uh, interesting. Still, though they’re working on a new album, Koenig cautions that it’s going to be a while before fans actually hear it. After the year they’ve had, VW have sort of earned the right to take their time with things — not to mention the fact that they’re still waiting for “Date Night” to make it to the top of their Netflix queue. “Knowing us, it takes us a very long time to make an album,” Koenig said. “Is it possible that things from the Vampire Weekend family could come out in 2011? I’m sure, but a Vampire Weekend album … I don’t see any reason to rush it.” Related Photos KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas Related Artists Vampire Weekend
