Blame Miley Cyrus: White Researcher Claims The Origin Of “Twerk” Was Created By Germans And Not Blacks

Black folks been twerking since the beginning of time! Researcher Claims Origin From Twerk Is German Via HuffPo reports In descriptions of grinding and the Harlem Shake, twerk occurs with great regularity. The verb means “to move one’s buttocks in a suggestive way.” It has not yet made its way into OED and perhaps never will (let us hope so), but its origin hardly poses a problem: twerk must be a blend of twist (or twitch) and work (or jerk), a close relative of such verbs as squirm (possibly a blend of dialectal squir “to throw with a jerk” and worm) and twirl (? twist + whirl). When blends are coined “in plain sight” — as happened to brunch, motel, and Eurasia — no one has questions about their descent. The noun designates a rope made of two threads, a twirl, and refers to various distortions. Hence the verb twist “to intertwine; curve; wring.” Especially characteristic are the Germanic congeners of twist: German Zwist ~ Low German twist “quarrel, discord”; Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish also have tvist (the same meaning). Twig “a small shoot of a tree” seems to be akin to some words for “fork.” If this is true, then a twig once denoted a forked branch, an object with two prongs. How it acquired its modern meaning remains unclear. German Zweig does not conjure up a picture of a tiny branch, though it is smaller than an Ast “bough.” (Did Dickens hint to the vicissitudes in the fate of his hero when he called him Twist? After all, it was he, rather than Mr. Bumble, who invented the name.) Basically, White people have discovered the art of twerking and want to claim it. What’s next, white folks claiming they invented the Bankhead Bounce and Tootsie Roll?! SIT DOWN! Continue reading

Will ‘Magic Mike’ Cast Strip At MTV Movie Awards?

Movie’s co-stars Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey will be sitting front and center at the Movie Awards on Sunday night. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike” Photo: Warner Bros. UNIVERSAL CITY, California — We’d be lying if we said that we weren’t looking forward to a surprise striptease from the cast of “Magic Mike” during the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night. Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and the rest of the cast are going to be sitting front and center in the audience, so it would be a prime location for them to get up and start grinding among the likes of Kristen Stewart and Emma Watson. Fortunately, Movie Awards executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic has a backup plan in case the guys do decide to get their groove on during the show, which airs live tomorrow night at 9 p.m. ET. It just might not be a plan that viewers at home are big fans of. “We go to the big wide shot that’s facing out the door,” he said with a laugh when asked what he’d do if the “Magic Mike” gang started to get naked. Boo to that! Fortunately those men aren’t the only ones in attendance who are famous for getting naked on the big screen. Michael Fassbender will also be gracing the Movie Awards audience, and Ignjatovic said that there’s a (very slim) chance he could try some stripping too. At the same time, we might not even want to see Tatum and his castmembers show off their rocking bods during the Movie Awards, because they might not be so rocking anymore. Tatum teased during our that the pre-shoot regimen for the movie was much more strenuous than what came after. “I think pre-movie is pretty intense because to get butt naked, you have to — there’s a different regimen for getting butt naked, but thank god, it was a short shoot,” Tatum said with a sly grin. “Then we just had fun on the day.” Somehow we doubt the men have let themselves go in the time since, but we’ll use that as our excuse in case we don’t get the Movie Awards all-male striptease we so desire. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET.
