Update China Earthquake: Death Toll Rises to 400

The death toll in China’s earthquake disaster has risen to almost 400 in a mountainous and indigent area of Qinghai province. There were 8,000 injured including primary schoolchildren, who were buried under detritus. The earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 hit at 7:49 a.m. During this time people were probably still at home and schools were just starting the day. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded several strong aftershocks, just within hours of the initial quake.
