Dick Trickle, a former NASCAR star, has died. He was 71 years old. Police in North Carolina believe that Trickle took his own life, shooting himself at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincoln County at 12:02 this afternoon. Officials say they got a phone call before the shooting in which the caller said there would be a dead body at the cemetery … and it would be his. Operators scrambled to call back, but got no answer. When emergency responders arrived, they found Trickle near his pickup truck. The fan favorite is said to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Trickle did leave a suicide note at the death scene, though the contents of the note are released at this time and it’s unclear if and when they will be. Dick, who often smoked while racing, won the NASCAR “Rookie of the Year” award in the Winston Cup in 1989, when he was a spry 48 years old. He won twice and notched 78 top tens in his career. R.I.P.
